Hey LS1.com.au
I'm looking to upgrade my VX S to a 04 VY SS.
I found one I particularly like the looks of, i'm just wondering what I should know
Its a low km example (96,000) in red, 4 speed auto. Very good condition, full service history no modifications.
I'm just curious is there any common problems I should be on the look for? The car is as clean as they come
The usual fuel economy question, going from my ecotec to the ls1 how much difference can I expect? Id budget around 20% more fuel, which I think is around the norm.
Anything else I should know? I noticed that most VY SS's have the bottom of the front bumper painted black, for whatever reason this one doesn't have that. Is that a factory option or is that a sign of possible collission?
Also whats a fair price these days? They have 16k on it, i'd like to offer less obviously.
Thanks for any input guys

Only series 1 has the bottom of the front bumper black, series 2 is colour coded.
The only issue I have ever had with mine is that it pops out of reverse occasionally

I have both ,our Wagon v6 and my SS use about the same amount of fuel ,on a long trip the SS is better ,in the 3 years i have had mine the only real problem i had was oil pressure switch had 109xxx when i bought it has 138xxx on it now ,mostly city driving i know which one i prefer to drive the old wagon is nice but not at all comfortable anymore so the wife gets that to drive i just fix it when it stuffs up .
All up i love my SS .
Use no oil at all and the engine is quiet on hot and cold start ..

Series 2 had the bottom of the front bar the same as the cars body colour.
I have a Series II VY SS ute and it had given me no trouble since I got it in March 2010. Until a couple of weeks ago, when the clutch slave cylinder started leaking. But that wont effect you as your looking at an auto.
My fuel economy varies from 12 litres to 15 litres per 100 km.

Thats the only way to buy them IMO. Mine was a one owner, full service history, low km, (108,000) and stock standard when I got it.

I have also had mine for three years, was a 1 owner, 81,000km (now has 195,000), full log books, completely standard.
Uses no oil, quiet as a mouse even on cold start up. Gets 8.5l/100km hwy and sits on about 15.5l/100km city since the mafless tune.
Apart from service every 10,000km and tyres car has by cost a cent

Just curious do you mind telling me how much trade in you got for it?
Because this is a dealer car and just so I know how much they paid for it.. roughly.

Yep I suspect it would be around this.
They are both autos.

Ah yes, my parents had this trouble with their VZ, i'll make sure they work good tip.

Yes, as said, I didn't think there would be a huge difference driven sedately. My S pack does tend to get a bit of a flogging but. It probably uses 20L/100km though!

I prefer the black lip really. I also found something curious, on the VY the digital LCD doesn't actually show KMH, it shows everything but KMH. That was weird after the VX does it.
If the car is clean should I still get a RACQ check or just try and give it a suss out myself? Its hard because the car is a decent trip away from me, although it probably is worth the check up on such a large investment.

Get the check done-I looked at a car for a forum member and it looked very clean. When he did the pre-purchase check (Car Facts I think) he found out it had been a repairable write off TWICE
I just traded my VY11 SS auto (with a damaged front bar/dings in bonnet) and got $6K,saw it online for $10K with NO repairs done, needed 2 tyres and I was quoted $1200 by the panel shop to tidy it up.It is no longer at the yard (near my place) so is possibly sold or at panel beaters
Mechanically it was good but I did lose the axle bolts on 1 side at the diff coupling recently, always kept the maintenance up to it so the last problem was a mystery

Good tip, these are available on carsales for $25. Worth every cent I think.
I was more meaning to a RACQ mechanical inspection, they cost a few hundred dollars but mostly are a huge pain the bum so to speak to organise.

I realised at the time you were referring to a mechanical inspection but wasn't sure if they included an accident report in the price

IMHO stuff like RACV etc tests are basically a waste of time. They typically pick up useless stuff like wiper blades worn or washer bottle needs filling and miss big expensive stuff unless it's already obvious to blind Freddy.
If you're anywhere near a sponsor pay them to check over any car you're considering buying because they're very experienced with these cars and know exactly what to look for. :goodjob:
