Last night while out with a couple mates I attempted to make a quick 2nd to 3rd up change. I must have rushed it a tad too much and as such missed the gear. Didn't hear any teeth cleaning action (grinding sounds) and it went into 3rd totally fine once I took a bit longer to do it.

Not long after I noticed that I could not down change from 6th gear to 5th gear. I can up change from 4th to 5th no worries it seems but if I want to down change from 6th to 5th it feels like the gate is locked out. If I double clutch it and get the revs just right it will slide in ok (I got it to do this about 2 out of 10 times last night)

Once I got home I moved it through the gears sitting idling in the garage. 5th gear wasn't locked out when moved from 6th to 5th or 4th to 5th but it didn't feel like it wanted to go completely into the gear.

Thus far I'm pretty sure it's going to be a Synchro problem (though I'm really hoping I'm wrong) though it's been totally fine up to this point.

I however can't say when the gearbox oil was last changed so could it be something as simple as low oil in the box? Haven't checked it since last night but I'm not expecting it to have magically fixed itself over night.

If it is indeed something terminal while I've got the box out I'll get a Rip-Shifter installed at the same time.

Any good shops I should speak to in the Brisbane/Gold Coast area?

Any help would be most appreciated.

can't help you with your problem, though for a repair shop of the T56 you've go Malwoods in warwick, however they won't warrant the gb with a rip shift or similar shifter on it after rebuild.

Probably more likely ****ed shifter bushes or something. I'd pull the shifter and check it out before assuming the box is bad. If you have a tendency to smash the shifts you'll probably wear the bushes quicker.

Cheers guys. Yeah I know of Mal Wood. I'd rather look around a bit more locally if possible though.

I don't often smash or do quicker changes. I know the T56 is a box that needs to used a bit slower than others. Last night was the first time I would have tried to change 2-3 quickly in the year and a bit I've owned it.

As I've never checked the shifter bushes I'll take a look into how to do it and try giving it a whirl.

I'd edit my post but for the life of me I cannot find the edit button.

To make things a little more confusing if I downshift and go from 6th to 4th to 5th (holding the clutch in the whole time) it will go into 5th ok and seems to be fine.

honestly sounds like syncros. if the rest of the shifting pattern is ok except for 5th -6th id say the 5th/6th syncro is stuffed. i could be wrong but thats what it sounds like...

just my 2 cents

I dont know a lot about gearboxes, but wouldnt worn synchros result in grinding?

if double clutching is required to shift from 5th to 6th and matching the revs that indicated worn syncros

if double clutching is required to shift from 5th to 6th and matching the revs that indicated worn syncros

It shifts from 5th to 6th fine. 6th is working normally.

It's only when going down to 5th from 6th. As said though if I go 6th to 4th then to 5th it'll go in ok.

By that I mean

Hold clutch
Move shifter from 6th into 4th
Move shifter from 4th into 5th
Release clutch

5th gear is the only problem.

Also as said while the car was idling I could go through the gears from 1 to 6 and then back to 1 ok but 5th didn't seem like it wanted to go all the way in.

The problem only happens when DOWNSHIFTING from 6th to 5th.

syncros work in both directions ie up and down shifts
