So who's waiting for it?
I've been following the leaks with interest this year as I'm due for a new phone.
Of particular things I'm looking forward to.
NFC
4G LTE
16:9 aspect ratio
HD front camera.
From the leaked pics I've seen, it looks good. Not to different from the current model but taller and thinner
I'm running ios6 now so that won't be new to me come release. But it will interest some with the new features.
Things I like about it is
Do not disturb
Reply with message call screening

I am waiting for it as my contract is up early next year, F*ck going with another android phone since it takes 7yrs to get updates if the telco finally decides to give them to us with their bloatware.

Yeah it is part of the way android is though, unavoidable in the segment they wish to operate in. Has the GSII even got ICS yet?

Depends on the telco, Vodafone have stopped issuing updates for my phone (HTC DESIRE HD) so I like many people have rooted it to get ICS. Only problem with doing that is the rom you use is only as good as the person creating it which can be hit and miss from the few ive had.

That's one thing I've always like about the iPhone. Apple calls the shots. So you know you'll get support for at least a couple of years. Hell the 3Gs gets ios 6. Its 3 years old. plus there is no carrier bloat ware on ios. Luv that

Each to their own i'm an Android person/fan, but what i don't like about the Iphone is it's ludicrous price point, for example on the Telstra small plan the Iphone 4s 32gb is only $2 a month cheaper than the soooo much better Samsung Galaxy SIII.
Iphone is a good phone and has very good service warranty but i reckon it bloody silly paying that much for a well and truly outdated product., hopefully the Iphone 5 has something fresh and new, something different, not just an Iphone 3 in another new skin. My opinion anyway!

I manually installed beta 1 that I found (google it). The rest of the beta's (up to 3 now 4 should be here tomorrow ish) have been over the air updates
A word of caution though apparently you don't need your device registered under a dev account for ios6. Plenty of stories of normal consumers installing it.
But the normal practice in the past was you needed the device to be registered or it won't boot.
My phone is registered so I don't really care about the bug as it doesn't apply to me.

I think apple need to do something quite good with the new iPhone whenever it is released, as I know it is starting to fall behind and actually losing a bit of market share because the Samsung galaxy is so far ahead. iPhone will have to be pretty good otherwise I think it will be pretty disappointing. Don't get me wrong, I love my apple products but hope the new phone is quite a big step otherwise I might even have a look at other products.

O one feature I forgot to mention in ios 6 (probably the best feature lol) is Facebook integration. It really bakes it right into the os.
For example
Can update a status from the notification menu
Upload photos right from the photos app
Contacts update to include Facebook data like phone numbers email addys
URL links in safari can be shared straight from the browser
And plenty more I can't think of

It's a simple case of a manufacturer sitting back and relying on it's name and strong marketing campaigns rather than continued product development, actually sounds alot like the cars we drive

Google apple developer.
Alternatively there are sites out there that allow you to send them your phones Id and they will add your Id to their dev account for like under $10.
Apple doesn't really like it though and are cracking down supposedly

So, to go back to the very first line of your post.
"So who's waiting for it?"
No I'm not. Why?
I haven't been sucked in by the marketing campaign of Apple that has convinced much of (mostly) gen Y that the world failed to exist before the iPhone was invented. Back in the past, people actually spoke to each other intelligently most of the time, they participated in real, physical activities, and they had long term goals. Now, we have people that can't function without their daily bitchfests on facebook, twitter and other online social media, only aim the length of a twitter post ahead in their lives, are totally obsessed with their online image, would rather play games on their phones/pc's than "real" games with friends, can't go out to dinner with friends/partners without spending half the night on their phones to other people/websites, think a tropical relaxing holiday without free wi-fi is a holiday from hell, walk in front of and get splattered by cars, bikes, trains whatever rather than looking at where they are walking- like, you can't read that status update/text 5 whole seconds after it was sent or you're a loser, lose their jobs over their phone addictions during work hours, are seriously sleep deprived over using their phones/ipads/pc's right up to the minute they try to go to sleep, the sexting menace from camera phones destroying lives, to some pretty serious mental health issues, much of which is fuelled by smartphone easy access to online hate.
So, to anyone that reckons the world has become "better" from all this geeky techy stuff, and reckons the next iGeek is something huge to look out for, you have no idea.

I have a smartphone, but it's not an Apple i-ripoff. I'm not on a huge mega data plan designed to help me waste away half my life doing fark all, and it definitely comes second to the rest of my life. I even look where I'm walking...:lmao:
The thing MANY fail to grasp, is that this geeky, consumer spending driven world ain't "better"...it's just "different". The bizarre thing is that many people these days, in trying to outdo each other with all their spending on the latest "must haves", all end up being exactly the same as each other!
Many will say the current era is actually worse than "the past". Look at how stressed out the world is these days. Too many people have no down time. Why do you reckon??????????????????????????????????????
It aint that hard to figure out...

It's not having a smartphone that's the issue- it's the totally obsessed with nothing else but their phone addiction many have that's the real problem, and it's hurting people in many ways.
Perhaps try to stop taking what I've written so personally, and start understanding it.

had this sent to me today about apple, IMO im a little worried about what the new iphone will contain and how it will match in the market.
Apple is quickly ridding its OS of anything related to Google
Apple today released the latest beta for its upcoming iOS 6 mobile operating system. Although iOS 6 doesn’t make any huge leaps forward visually or productivity wise, the operating system has caught quite a bit of attention for what it lacks.
IOS 6 marks the first release of the operating system that doesn’t come preloaded with Google Maps. Instead, Apple kicked Google to the curb and included its own mapping service (which is actually not as functionally complete as Google Maps on many fronts).
Next, Apple passive aggressively removed the name “Google” from the search field in Safari, which signified that Google was powering search results (iOS also includes search options for Bing and Yahoo).
Now, Apple has taken the next step in ridding itself of Google’s “hooks” into iOS. In iOS 6 Beta 4, Apple has removed the YouTube app from the Springboard. The YouTube app has been featured on iOS ever since the iPhone’s introduction in 2007.
According to The Verge, this is what Apple has to say on the matter:
Our license to include the YouTube app in iOS has ended, customers can use YouTube in the Safari browser and Google is working on a new YouTube app to be on the App Store.
Apple says that its license has expired, but we all know that it’s secret for “We feel slighted by Google, and we hate everything they stand for.”
At least iOS users can rest assured that YouTube will continue to function normally through Safari. In addition, Google is working on a standalone Maps app that will be available in the App Store and should reintroduce the features that Apple stripped from its own mapping app with iOS 6.

There is nothing evil about apple, they make good quality products that are easy to use, and they all integrate well together. So you cant install anything and everything on the iPhone, what do you think makes apples software so stable? The fact that they regulate what software can be installed on their phones. The only argument I ever seem to hear about android phones is 'everything's free' in regards to software.
Not trying to turn this into an apple VS the world debate, but I believe they make brilliant products. I have 2 iphones, 1 2011 macbook air, a 2tb time capsule and an apple TV in my house and everything just clicks, no complicated setups, no 3 hour phone calls to tech support, just works.

Tried Android with Galaxy S2, nice hardware, even if it felt cheap, shit software in my opinion. Back to Apple and no regrets. The galaxy was easy to use, I rooted it and fiddled with it a lot, so no issues with being able to use it, I just didn't like the software. And half the apps I use were either unavailable, or the quality was well under the iOS version, the whole user experience for me wasn't that great.
The kids have now got iPods at thier mother's so they can talk to me through imessage, which is great. I'm more than happy with Apple's products for now, I'm not fircely loyal to them so if things do go to shit i will look at the competition, but not at the moment.
I do see Davo's point but agree this isn't the thread to bring up stuff like that, same as bagging Apple products, keep it out of here.
I will be getting the new phone, thinking I may go back to black as well, the "leaks" look much better in black IMO. I'll have that to replace the 4S I have now, which is borrowed so I have to give it back to it's owner, the iPad, Apple TV, and the kids iPods, plus my next laptop is looking like being a MBP, see what happens there, if my 5 year old Dell ever dies too.
I'm just happy with what I have, it's easy to use with minimal or no fuss, and it just works. Had some issues with Android, and that was before I started playing with things.
Also, it appears iOS6 Beta 4 shows that it can scale apps to suit the supposed new screen, so it looks almost certain the new phone will have the taller screen as suggested.

Google will be supplying a dedicated Youtube app for iOS. The previous native app was simply named Youtube but was 100% designed and managed by Apple. This was a bit of a sore point for Google because apparently it wasn't given much attention by Apple, so updates were few and far between. Google will also provide a standalone Maps app for iOS too as far as I'm aware.

The Youtube app on iOS and Android actually had nothing to do with flash. Both Apps were native video players which streamed directly from the Youtube backend (that's why you can get video downloader plugins to download youtube video files directly). The only reason flash is in use on the website is Flash presented the only way to decode the video on the client side and have consistent player controls. All the videos themselves are in standard formats (H263/H264/vp8 etc) which can be played by any regular video player like VLC or even windows media player with correct codecs.
Have a look here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/YouTube#Quality_and_codecs
So in reality, Apple kinda just shot themselves in the foot by forcing people into the browser when HTML5 video integration isn't ready for the masses.
In the big picture, I'd be interested to see what the JailBreak crowd do with the new iPhone. Funnily enough, you actually have a better chance of running Unix-compatible programs on a jailbroken iOS device than on Android. This mostly comes down to all the hackers pouring their effort into a single device rather than hundreds. Just the nature of the beast though. We usually have at least a couple of iphones and ipads of different generations in the office as testing platforms.

I am hoping that call quality will include on the iPhone 5, certainly over the 4 which I have had numerous drop outs on through both Telstrarse and Optarse.
I switched to the Galaxy S2 4G and the novelty has worn off pretty fast, it sucks the battery like nothing else - and that's without using 4G. The battery will report full and then die, unless I turn it on and off again daily it doesn't track capacity properly.
Personally, for my next phone it'll be Windows 8 Phone vs Apple. I enjoyed using my Omnia 7 however at the time it lacked features so I returned to the iPhone 4. Google will screw itself over it's rediculous software update philosophy which is something Apple and even Microsoft are doing quite a good job of in comparison.
Once thing that sh!ts be about Apple recently is that they are playing 'catch up' with features and still trying to brag about including them - they need the iPhone 5 to be something game changing. The iPhone 4S and 'new ipad' were nothing to be amazed by in comparison to their predecessors.

YouTube isn't reliant on Flash from a browser though. Ie it works fine on my iPhone that no longer has the YouTube App. I've just added it as a Web App to my home screen. Works just a good as the old native app. Used to use the browser anyway as the App didn't support HD over 3G.

What I think the 5 will do is bring NFC to the masses. While its been deployed in other phones for years, its never really been taken up by the populus. Apple is good at doing this and I think it will be huge in the next few years. For those that have seen what PassBook is going to have, I think its just scratched the surface.

Well... It's out and without NFC. But it is enough to beat the other competitors such as the HTC One XL, Samsung Galaxy S3 and even the Lumia 920 WP8?
It's interesting to note that they also burnt off every accessory made previously for the iDevices - that's a bold move especially if you went and bought a Zepplin speaker dock for it or something else high end.

It is a nice mid-range phone with a top end price tag again.
I think the Nokia 920 is now the leading phone of the upcoming bunch.
Better camera, better screen, better audio, thicker and heavier, better battery life, wireless charging, NFC, better OS, better apps.
Still, the Apple fans will lap it up.

It doesn't have to be enough because apple fanboys will buy it even if its shite on a stick, apple has become a product associated with a certain lifestyle required to own it, purchasing everything from its tailored apps to its proprietary accessories, its a monopoly within its own market. Someone care to explain to me the "bigger 4inch screen" thing, it's either 4 inches or it's not? I don't get it.

There is a 32 pin adaptor you can buy for the iPhone 5 to make it compatible with "legacy accessories".
The question for everyone that has multiple docks is, "do I carry the adaptor everywhere, or buy one for every dock?". At US$29ea (which will probably magically convert to AU$39) I assume it'll probably be the one connector carried everywhere for most.

I'm buying one outright. Telstra plans are shit at the moment. My 2 year old plan gives me $400 worth of calls text which I barely use and 6gb of data for $78.50. No way is 3gb on lte enough for me

It doesn't have to be enough because apple fanboys will buy it even if its shite on a stick, apple has become a product associated with a certain lifestyle required to own it, purchasing everything from its tailored apps to its proprietary accessories, its a monopoly within its own market. Oh btw, the galaxy s3 is a really nice phone though, just got mine last week.
I'm using a HTC One XL now and I can find very little wrong with it at all. No reason to change just to be the same. Now where are those Windows 8 tablets.

Just go into your provider and tell them you need a new sim. It takes about 10 minutes to deactivate and reactivate and costs nothing (if you do it through Telstra anyway).

Sorry to all the fan bois out there, this is a fail of a phone..
There is nothing on the phone that hasnt already been on many other non iDevices for over 12 months, yet there are many missing items that should have been included. So basically you are getting .5 of an inch bigger screen and a slightly faster processor. Whilst having to shell out for a connector for home/office and car, so most will need at least two connectors. Now most docks and accessories I have seen the iPhone sits pretty snug/flush or in some sort of cradle, I am tipping with the new connector this will not be the case and many a phone will fall and or look out of place. I have read reports that with the new backing and the new processor heat has become a real issue with the phone as well.
No doubt it will sell millions however, once again iPhone has failed to innovate or lead the way in anything new and or exciting....Sticking with my Android device thats for sure..
PS Google Wallet is pretty bloody cool, the look on the girls face whan I paid in the supermarket by flashing my phone was impressive.

Ok cheers guys, Reason I am swapping from Android to Iphone again after having a 3G is that I am sick of the updates coming thru the network providers 1 year behind other countries and then them eventually just not updating. I have my HTC Rooted and have a Cynagen Mod Rom and whilst its the best one they have at the time (Think 7?) it still lags balls and all that and I have like 3 Apps on here that arent standard and not many pics etc but it just lags and battery life is f*cking useless after 5ish hours.

You should have got the Galaxy nexus. Update straight from Google, just a pure Android build with no 3rd party touches.
It is almost as fast as a Windows Phone, and nothing like the bloated SG2 I have. Battery life is great with almost 2 days between charges.

Much like people who buy HSV's there is better products out there for similar money, but sometimes it's not about that. Going off specs alone is not why I buy apple. It's about the package. The way the hardware works with the software, the way all their other products integrate seamlessly. The unrelieved support for updates or issues. It's more than a product. It's a lifestyle. Hell yes I'm an ifanboi. Much like I'm a HSV fanboi. Proud of it too.
I'm buying one tomorrow. Telstra hasn't released any special plans as yet, and since I'm on such a good plan from my 4 I'm just going to get it outright and keep my current plan. Looked at Optus as I technically don't need Telstra anymore since I left the NT, but their 4G is way behind.

1. They will not be on sale in Australia until next Friday not tomorrow, so you wont be..
2. Dont forget to add 100 bucks plus for the connectors.
3. Would not surprise me if there is a charge for the brand new (which are not in the country yet) Nano Sim cards. Most of the telecommunication companies have not even heard of the new nano sim.
4. You will probably have to wait 4-6 weeks on a new case as its bigger than previous versions.
5. For your own sake, check about the heat being produced behind the aluminium casing if you are in a warm climate.

Lol some funny comments. Gotta love the Samsung lovers jumping in claiming superiority.....Sure the S3 is a good phone now.......But its taken other companies how many years? how many phones? and how many ridiculous amounts of operating systems to create something thats actually competitive with the iPhone? Also amusing that theirs reports of heat issues........before the phone has even been available to the public....sounds like your general rumor mill firing up again.
Im actually glad they haven't gone too big with the screen. I've held a S3 and being a sparky, having a phone that big in my pocket would just shit me off. I'll def be upgrading to a iPhone 5 as soon as it hits stores here, but more for the fact my current plan with Optus is up and I want to go to Telstra.

The iPhone was AWESOME back in 2008.
HTC released the HD2 back in 2009 and was a better phone.
Credit for waking the industry up goes to Apple, but let's be honest, there have been 15-20 better phones in the past 3 years from a multitude of manufacturers.

Actually you pay for everything.
Whether you get value is up to the person spending the cash. Personally, all top end phones are about the 1K mark, which one is the closest in value, that is the real question.
The iPhone 5 is the cheapest to make, hence the massive profits given its market share of 16%. The lumia 920 will be the most expensive thanks to that amazing camera in it. The SG3, would only be a 100-130 more than the SG2.

I'll rephrase that, seeing as I can't edit the post due to time limits. When I said "still sounds pretty crap" I should have said something like, "still sounds over-hyped". I'm sure it'll still be the phone everything else is compared to. Saying it's crap isn't really justified.

Of course they'll have massive sales. It's the only "latest" Apple handset. So, a new phone has come out with a slightly bigger screen, and it's slightly thinner, and it's case is made of a different material, and it works a bit faster.
And in return, for handing over yet more of your money to be the "first" of millions of people to have one first, you have to go and buy adaptors to make it dock on your existing stations (at your own additional cost of course).
This is the "biggest" new product release of the year, and highly anticipated. People line up with their credit cards and debit cards to buy one.

End of the day it is their money. I do feel sorry for people sucked in this bad though. How can owning the latest iPhone be sooooooo important to their lives? They need a "real" life, not one that pretty much only exists behind a 4 inch piece of glass.

Apple love people like yourself macca. Guaranteed sale every time they release a new product.
It's becoming obvious that this style of product has pretty much matured, and it's only the details that change each time now. Slightly clearer or different size screen, operate a little quicker, maybe throw in a DAB+ radio in the 6, add more apps etc, but since it already provides music and internet in a phone (just inserting different existing products into the one unit), where do you think their next big thing will come from?

It's often simply a matter of just preferring the OS. There are a lot of people out there that clearly prefer iOS, but given the devices/hardware options running it are so limited the sales per model are through the roof. It's a fantastic business model and Apple can afford to lose out on the customers who want a hardware option they don't cater for. If Apple offered iOS to other manufacturers the Apple specific sales would be guaranteed to drop, but iOS sales would most likely increase. Just like I prefer Android but don't have a manufacturer preference, I'm sure many people simply prefer iOS, but when it boils down don't simply prefer Apple as a manufacturer. Their preference is just bound to Apple as a manufacturer instead.

With most phones in most circumstances wont matter. I'm still getting 3 days out of my GSII, which includes bluetooth phone, wifi and 3G connection. Charging my phone nightly instead is so big deal, it just means I have to take 3 seconds to plug it in before I go to bed every night instead of every third night. Some people still believe phones should last a week without charging, but that's not going to happen with smartphones regardless.

People adapt in life. Look at all the people that continue to buy "inferior" Windows PC's.
Apple are the perfect blueprint on how to make vast money. Convince people you have something they just can't possibly live without and they will keep coming. I just feel sorry that so many people are happy to blow hard earned money on something they really don't need to. I have a non Apple smartphone that does everything I want it to do, and it was available on as little as a $29 plan over 2 years with no handset repayments. It even came with every genuine accessory required bar a bracket to stick it onto the windscreen. It came with lifetime free maps included, and it even came with that so uncool to Apple fans thing called a radio...
So it has less apps. I'll survive. I have a pc at work and a notebook at home to do that 99% of the time. When I go out I generally talk to friends or enjoy a meal or whatever. The phone can stay in the pocket rather than rule my life. :yup:

And you can do that with an iPhone too. Bluetooth won't do track info though or charge your phone
Did I say it was Android specific? No shit about the track info or charging abilities. It also wont do a hell of a lot of other stuff that a cable can manage. There are also a heap of accessories for non-iPhones, but I'm sure you knew that already too. Would be awesome if you turned off that bloody Tapatalk message.

iPhone 5 will sell like hotcakes. Repurchase intent for iOS users is just huge. It;s a solid device, easy to use, looks nice. Tick, people will want it.
That said, I prefer Android - pure Android i.e. Nexus phones. I use an iPhone for work but the screen size has always bugged me, hence I love my 4.65 screen on the Nexus and the ability to customise everything. Jellybean is indeed as good as any iOS I've used (better actually) and the new voice search kills Siri stone dead. The iPhone 5 is certainly not revolutionary - in the official video I watched today, more time was spent describing the diamond cut aluminium and the overall design than anything else. New maps (no turn by turn nav in Aus), flyover was cool (only Syd/Mel), LTE is great, passbook? Not sure. That's really it as far as advancements.
But it's fast, slick, great UX, it's familiar, it works well, and it'll sell like wildfire. And I'd recommend one to the average smartphone user.

If only they charged the $350 the thing is actually worth and not the exuberant $600-$700 they do charge.
Spec vs Spec the Iphone is left in the Galaxy's wake, yet you pay more for the "inferior" product.
I think some people struggle to make a decision on their own and just buy it cos the marketing and the other ill informed tell them to.

Yeah mate the native YouTube app dropped off in beta 4. Fear not though google released a new YouTube app a few days ago. It's in the app store now and it's in someways better than the old native app anyway feature wise. Just it has ads now.
For those keen on ios6 now. Anyone can install the GM release. You just have to download it from a non apple source. I still haven't bothered as its not over the air until the 19th and beta 4 has been very solid.

Really. The 5's processors are the latest arm bit of kit strongly believed to be dual a15's going by how it performs compared to what reviewers are seeing next to the 4s and how power efficient it is on LTE. The s3 is a bit behind right there.

Yep it was pretty disappointing, much like the launch of the 4S. If it wasn't for work paying, I would definitely not have an iPhone, and to still charge $800 and up for the same capacities is an absolute joke. Bear in mind that the 4S was around $250 worth in parts for its 800 dollar asking price.
I'll stick with my 4S until it dies.
Given the recent swing towards Android, (thanks mostly to Samsung continuing to offer quality handsets) hopefully Apple will develop something better for the next iteration of iPhone. That said, the iSheep will stil buy these in their droves (at least in Western countries).
Also agree that the new Youtube app is a lot better featured than the native one.

The one area that the Iphone is better than an SIII is the LTE 4g support in Australia.
56% of all smartphones sold in the US this last year were Android based and the numbers are growing everyday, so much more functionality and freedom do what you want with the device you paid for......

I'm still not convinced phones need such high definition displays. I have a 27" monitor in front of me with 1080p with pixels I can't see. I can't see pixels on my GSII without bringing it within 25cm of my face, and the GSII is really quite low res for a screen this big compared to newer phones. Maybe I just need to compare a higher definition phone to mine properly, but if it's bright, has good colour and contrast ratio, and has pixels I can't see at regular viewing distance, the screen is good enough for me.

The 5 has a "global" radio doesn't it, so there's not difference in model between counties? Unless I got that mixed up, anyone who has the ability to wait for the initial sales hype to die down should just get one from the US and save big $$. I bought my last few phones from the UK and saved several hundred dollars each time, but nowhere near $500 in one shot! Maybe $500 in total

Sorry to let the facts get in the road but the US price is based on the phone being on a plan with a carrier.
Either that or Apple are just giving away iPhone 4's, coz the Apple US website is advertising them for $0

Yep, look at the available carriers AT&T, Sprint and Verizon.
In fact that would actually make them cheaper here since carriers will probably give them to you for free on a plan.
The bill of materials for the iPhone 5 is listed at $167 which would mean Apple would only make $32 on that phone without a plan... Does that sound like Apple's business model to anyone? (someone hit the sarcasm button for me)
That ad shows just how stupid some people are in Australia
Yes it does... It shows they don't understand the difference between buying a phone outright and buying a phone on a plan through a telco.
People need to actually investigate things rather than taking them on face value......

Well sorry, Mrs I've never been mistaken in my life. If you think about it a little bit, it might come across as though "Available on AT&T, Sprint and Verizon" mean that the radio will work across the board, unlike previous iPhones. I guess I've just been a victim of marketing and advertising, seeing as that's exactly the impression they want to give.

Thanks for clearing that up. The "global phone" thing Apple is advertising was making me think otherwise.
I've done the research by the way. It looks like the pre-paid iPhone5 is set to take on the iPhone4S's original value in the US, starting at US$399 and adding US$100 for the increased storage. Yet to be confirmed.

Not sure but I guess I've got a decent chance. Never purchased one outright before. Would of gone on a new contract with telstra but they're all quiet on special plans thus far. The plan I'm on is pretty good $78.50 for $400 worth of calls and 6gb. Going off recent plans I can't see them beating that.
This way even though I'm paying over 1k upfront I've got flexibility and will consider a 5s next year if the plans are any good.

It's ridiculous that my 2 year old plan has far more scope for data. Lte is just going to increase my usage so there is no way I'm going backwards. This is just telstra relying on people going over their monthly quota so they can cash in

It's sort of tragic the amount of blind faith people put in a product that may, or may not be any good - especially around Apple. Honestly, I never found an iPhone to be a device that I pined over, I tried a couple, and, well, it was kinda - meh...
I'll waste money on many things, but a product that I can't try, see, feel or has never been reviewed? I'll pass.

I buy all my phones like this, always have. Anytime I've used a 'demo' model in the shop, it hasn't made my decision any easier/harder. I honestly don't know many people (if any) that put off buying a phone until they've 'test driven' one first.

If all you want is data, get the cheapest cap out (say $50) and add a data plan to it.
So you'll get 1gb on the $50 cap and add a $60/8gb data pack to it and you'll get 9gb a month for $110. No big deal?

Preordered mine today online.
Everyone says its not worth the $800-1000 price tag, but put it this way, no other device does everything so simply and makes it very intuitive for me to do things. Apple have a great range of products have are compatible and work together very well.
I use my iPhone for pretty much everything, phone, text, internet, alarm, and much more, even the fact it has a clock on it saves my ass sometimes as I hate watches.
Its the little details that Apple put in that make it a better product overall, sure it might not have the same 'technological' ability in terms of processor, camera, etc but its the whole 'package' that makes me keep buying the new ones.

But sometimes in bad reception or app not working it's easier to call. In just using tht as an example of something I'd get charged for. Cheers

That's another great thing about the iPhone - the insane resale values....
I sold a like new condition 16gb iphone 4 a month ago for $465.
If you'd bought your phone outright from the states you would have made a profit.

The whole package you refer to? A $500 Android phone will do all the same just as easy but better!
Yes and No.
Yes because Android has similar apps, no because its easier for ME as I have everything already set up. I have my computer with all my programs, apps and data which is unison with my iPhone. My music alone that I have on iTunes, pictures in iPhoto, etc, its a better all round package..IMO of course. Apple just make it easier for the user, whenever I had a Windows Laptop and a Nokia phone they never worked well together or at all, with the Apple products they all just work flawlessly and nothing is ever too difficult.
Put it this way, my dad is almost 60 years old. Up until about 1 year ago, he could only email people using a laptop and would need assistance to print or send attachments...now he is setting up his iPhone on itunes, downloading music, putting photos on his computer, etc. There is no way in hell that he could have done this on a windows with an android phone, Apple is just too easy.

Simply pointing out the stupidity/ignorance/blind faith in purchasing one in Oz in the first place. I'm sure there's many things you don't need to do. Most people do things because they want to. Making a profit on a phone outdated by two models would be a something most people with half a brain would want to do.

Yes he could. No one is so incompetent that they can't plug a phone into a computer and drag and drop. Not even Apple users.
I get that you think it is the easiest thing ever, but keep the theatrics out of it. The tech is not the issue with old people, it is thinking outside the box that screws them.

Most likely. If you spent the same amount of time with an Android phone you'll most likely find it just as easy to navigate. I have the same issues with going to a Mac from PC. The Mac just seems wrong, but that's because I've used a PC my whole life.

I've always had the latest Microsoft OS. My next computer will be a Mac. Having ios made the transition to osx easier for sure. I've even got chrome OS on a thumb drive. It's terrible, but it was never intended to be a full feature OS. I actually find it quite amusing that apple run windows better in the cases I've used it than all my previous machines. Their driver support is fantastic for boot camp. The dell machines I have now are rubbish for drivers when you fresh install.

Android works exactly the same way as the 'cloud' anything I put on my computer still syncs to my phone and tablet and vice versa.
My dad is also nearly 60 years old and much prefers Android to iOS... 60 really isn't that old, even my grandfather who is over 90 has used both systems without issues!

Do you run good PC hardware (i.e. over 2500) or cheap?
Such a hard post to decipher. Are you saying it is hard to get drivers for Dell, or their defaults are unacceptable?
I find OSX runs faster in VMWare on a PC than it does on a MacBook Air. Probably because it is all running in RAM ;)

I've got all dell machines at the moment some mid range, some low.
The thing with their drivers is its all over the shop. Use your serial number to point you to all the applicable drivers is one thing. But then to have to id every component, download every individual component, extract them all individually and then install them. It is messy. With bootcamp it's all in one installer and newb proof.
Mac Airs are low end hardware. It's only natural it will run better on a faster PC same as windows runs better on a higher spec mac through either a VM or bootcamp

I work with both Dell and Apple hardware in my line of work, and these notions that the Mac stuff is better in any way are ridiculous.
Yes of course a vertically integrated ecosystem = easy driver updates, but it's not like it's an onerous task with a Dell, if you really wanted to you could get by with the drivers that Windows automatically downloads. It's as simple as punching in the service tag on the support site, and it selects the correct drivers for the original configuration of that machine!
The warranty support is also far superior to anything Apple offers (for a supposedly "premium" product).
UEFI gives the illusion of a faster load time on the Mac, but it's a feature that is being integrated into pc's these days, I also assume you don't have or use a PC with an SSD in it.
The OS is continually being dumbed down and having features removed for the lowest common denominator, and IMO that's all it is - an OS for those too incompetent to use Windows, or those who are already sucked into the whole Apple ecosystem. Please also note to the computer illiterate that any entry level computing courses will be done on Windows based PC's and the majority of PCs out there still run Windows.
I have yet to see ONE thing that a mac can do better than a PC, but I have seen at least 10 imacs die due to unspecified hardware errors in OSX due to the non existent thermal management (of course with an OS with no decent error logging this can be maddening to diagnose), be an absolute management nightmare with a Windows based domain, and on top of that the never ending problems with printer drivers / adobe bugs etc etc
The Macbook Retinas / Airs are a laugh - vital components (inc SSD) hardwired to the motherboard so when it wears out, you either throw it out or buy the whole internals all over again!
/rant
I must admit I've got an i5 Portege with a 500gb SSD running Windows 8 and an i7 MacBook Air with a 256gb SSD and I find the Portege runs better than the MAC.
I use the Portege for business and had planned changing over to the "on paper" superior MAC but I'm finding that it just isn't any better...... In spite of a few things I dislike about Windows 8, I think in future I'll stick to iPhone and iPads.

It is sort of against what the pro is all about being locked down hardware wise and all.
You can still get a conventional pro if that's your thing.

Are you buying AppleCare or just forking out for the inevitable repairs that will come at the 3 year mark? (if only to get the battery replaced since it is literally glued to the casing) Depending on usage, the SSD will probably need replacing around then as well, with an overpriced Apple replacement (unless you are lucky enough to find a counterfeit one)
If you have money to burn and want to look "cool", fair enough. I'll stick to something that has user replaceable components and is extendable (kind of like the Iphone v its competition lol).
I do like to stymie the mac users at work with the question of "what does it actually do any better than a pc" and get responses varying from comparisons of a $3k imac/MBP to a $500 pc, to "it's industry standard", "Adobe programs run better" (no they don't) etc.
Marketing is a wonderful thing when used to the effect that Apple have in indoctrinating people (i.e the whole "SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY" approach to any new product launch, even if it's a total disappointment etc)

For what I do I don't need computers to be replaced all that often. That's why I can justify buying a well built fairly well equipped mac today. It's like buying a merc over a Holden. Holden does the same thing but its not as nice a product. For a computer we're only talking a relatively small difference in cost. I like the way the macs and apple products are built beyond hard core nitty gritty specs. In the end the mac product will make me happier and I can justify the cost. The same goes for cars all be it on a much larger financial scale but I can't justify that given my finances. Many can though and that's fine by me

"Snob factor" is perhaps a more honest assessment. Maybe you've heard an ad on radio (do Apple addicts even listen to radio- or is that so yesterday) that says "Look at me, I've got an iPhone". That's what it's all about to most people...if they were being totally honest.

iOS6 is out. Just downloaded it onto my old 4S and, well, it's ok (took about 40 minutes and it's over the air update). I'm not overly impressed with the new Maps. I equate this Apple vs everything is inferior to a Simpsons' episode I saw where Lisa designed a toy to compete with Malibu Stacey...
Oh My God Malibu Stacey has a new hat! and off they went to buy it.
What makes someone a fanboy is when they cannot acknowledge a defect in their own product nor a strength of a competitors product - that's what annoys me.
Designs are always full of compromises otherwise it will never get to the marketplace in time. These are still incremental updates, if you have an iPhone 4S with iOS 6 what difference do you have to an iPhone 5? Another row of icons? Not much of a justification for self-sustaining awesomeness.

That's true when people have some level of technical understanding, others see a greater number as being better product. Think about graphics cards, the same products have released under new names many times but if you didn't have any understanding or chose not to look you would think you actually had something new.
I actually want to see the competition neck and neck so that we ultimately benefit as consumers, I think Apple should have aimed higher (just like Nokia) to keep all other manufacturers highly motivated - this was something Apple achieved with the original iPhone and iPhone 4.

Macca, I thought if there was ever going to be a time to leave the Apple family now would be it! You now have to get all new cables, docks blah blah blah to suit the 5, and I guess the remainder of the family will follow suit over the next few models/years?

Shows just how unhappy and lonely many people are these days doesn't it. Addiction to social media and "techy" gadgets as their version of having a "life", the high profile creations often created by nerds with well known social awkwardness traits. So, the creations from these people now make many people feel like they have a life when they really don't. Having a life is talking to real friends regularly, talking to the people you go out to dinner or whatever with, etc etc. If you can't go out without leaving your phone in your pocket or handbag for most of the time you are with other people, you either have an addition, or you have another problem you need to face.

Gee Davo, your posts always give off such a cynical vibe!

Predictable post. Dare to have an opinion or call someone wrong and you get tagged a "troll".
If it makes your life better believing that's why I'm on here then I suggest you may have an issue to deal with.
This site ain't my "life". Neither is a smartphone or Facebook/Twitter.
He was pointing at your blatant contradiction David. You say people have no life. Yet here you are day in day out as a top poster on an Internet forum.

Funny you say that, since I'm actually not on here that much these days.
At least I have a life away from iPhones and iPads...:teach:

You seem desperate to point that out. Why?

I probably wouldn't have gone that far Davo, but you have expressed your point. I just dont get people camping out for something that will be a dime a dozen in about two weeks time. If there was a limited run of say 10000 worldwide and you had to camp out to get them, then yeah I can see the point. But todays I phone 5 will be tommorows paper weights.

One day, maybe, these people might realise what they are doing. Hopefully before they drive into the back of the car in front, or get hit by a bus, or a train.
Besides being victims of their addiction, they are often simply blowing their money.
As they have a right to do, but don't get too precious if people point it out to them. Sometimes, the truth hurts, but you might learn from it.

Shows just how unhappy and lonely many people are these days doesn't it.
I think that's a pretty far fetched quote there Davo,
I mean, you may root chickens all night and think thats a life, and on the flipside of that they stop you from being lonely ;) Just because you "think" it makes them loner's and unhappy emo like doesn't mean that they are, who are you to judge? after all refer back to the poor chickens ;) Happiness abnd Loneliness is a state of mind,
being addicted to a piece of metal and spending $XX on it could be considered an addiction, does it mean this addiction is going to make you run little kiddies over in your piece of metal? You catching my drift?
maybe your stuck in the dark old ages, still watching BETA and waiting for a telex to come in? maybe your mrs is writing chain mail to send on to people, who knows, whatever makes you happy bud, as long as you dont hurt or offend anyone (to seriously) in the process you can keep on keeping on, but stating that these people have issues and are unhappy is just plain stupid and excuse me for saying, very SHALLOW....
I'd be more inclined to agree with this far more reasonable comment than making such an ill informed and factless comment;;;

The world existed before mobile phones and ipads were invented VRII. If you can't see just how addicted people are to an electronic life then you need to open your eyes a whole lot more. Many people in life these days are looking for a distraction from reality, and phones have become the item to do it. Bit sad really. The simple pleasures in life have been forgotten, and strangely, the current lives of many people are far more distant than in the past, even though we are supposedly more "connected"...

iOS6 has been jailbroken already according to Engadget. One thing I'm a little jealous of is the ease of jailbreaking an iPhone. Some Android phones are very easy to root, others are very difficult.

Most of the early campers are representing businesses trying to the Apple style of marketing by getting exposure to the inevitable media circus.
Davo: Social networking and mobile computing means that I'm more connected to friends and family than I ever was in the past - I don't use electronic devices to replace human interaction, but to enhance it :)

only on old phones. The injection attack works everytime because Apple are lazy and don't fix their software.

See, even there you are so far of the mark it ain't funny! Social Media isnt used by people (the vast majority) as a distraction from reality, thats the twats living in Halo and World of Warcraft, eating packets of chips and smashing energy drinks to be supreme leaders, now that IS a DISTRACTION FROM REALITY! You seem to be very confused with different realities?
My closest family member is 7 hours away...and it spreads out from there (immediate family - mother, father, brother and sister) and Social Media is USED to communicate with each other, for example, taking a video of my daughter making her first steps and sending it to her proud grandparents and aunties uncles who would not have previously had the ability to experience that moment with us..can u see that? Or are too blinded by false and blind impressions you seem to hold so dearly?
So to me, and I would have a stab in the dark here and say 95% of the people using these services are using them to share those simple pleasures in life with the ones closest to them (or the world in some cases lol) as this simple qoute states:

i dont necessarily disagree with what Davo says its just the fact he took the high ground and the irony is he regularly gets caught up in back and forth arguments on this forum leads me to believe his life is no more exciting or socially active then an apple fanboy.
I agree people spend too much time on facebook and the like and share too much information about themselves. unfortuantely the internet is a rare place in todays society where you have the freedoms to do and say what you think, in a world of political correctness and where the criminal is treated like the victim its sometimes needed as an escape.
