G'day, was hoping somebody could give me a quick run down on bleeding the brakes in my vy ss.

im doing the hsv pbr brake upgrade and braided lines this weekend, changing all the parts around shouldn't be an issue (i hope) i've just never bled brakes on a car before and the abs has got me guessing.

is there a dummies guide out there?

Thanks. Mick.

Dummies guide as requested here (http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/how-to-bleed-your-brakes.html).

I'm no expert but generally you start with the rear left -rear right-front left-front right but ensure that you don't let the fluid drop to much in the reservoir otherwise air could get into the master cylinder.

Also as you would be changing fluid not just bleeding, you keep doing the bleeding process per wheel until the clean/new fluid comes through the hose.

Aye carumba! Mate, if you're not 100% CERTAIN you can do it, then do NOT mess with the most important safety feature in your car.

Good luck.

I suggest you put all brake parts in a box and take car to:
APS
HP-F
NJC Corp
GM Motorsport
Chevs
Etc
whichever is closest. Wise man once say if unsure how to do it yourself then just might be a job to leave to professionals

Give it a go yourself - it is not that hard really. ABS makes no difference to the way you bleed the brakes. Yes this is a vital safety component but it is one of the easiest maintenance tasks that you can do on a car and if you don't start somewhere you will never learn. Suggest that the first time you do it you get a mate who has bled brakes before to help. And use a Dot 4 or Super Dot 4 fluid. Working on your own car teaches you all sorts of important practical lessons that you would otherwise not be exposed to, including confidence in your own abilities, mechanical understanding and satisfaction that you've done the job yourself. The cost saving is just a bonus.

I agree with Mickey on this, well said.
If at the end of the process you don't have a pedal, don't drive the car ;)
It really is an easy job, make sure you don't put all your strength into doing up the hose couplings or bleeder nipples.

I've just put new rotors, pads, and fluid into my vx ss. In terms of bleeding I got myself a 'one man bleeding kit' which while it worked in the end, was a bit slow. I helped it along by a couple of presses on the pedal, helped get rid of dirt n shit that was preventing good suction... obviously keep bleeding after to make sure no air in system. I had no worries and now have a good pedal. No issues with ABS. Read up, and have a go!

Ive just finished fitting AP 4 piston front and rears to my vy ss about 5 minutes ago. Very easy to bleed.
I made up a clear piece of hose to go over nipple and put it in a empty jim beam stubby.
Then i got wife to pump brakes and then hold pedal as i bled fluid. I Bled each caliper around 10 times, air bubbles gone after 3 or 4 but i kept going until new fluid appeared in line.
As said start at furthest brake to reservior and work your way to nearest. Just keep eye that fluid level doesnt get to low.
Take your time and it is a easy job..

I think big brakes were well over due on that monster ;)

A lot of ABS units have problems if you allow air bubbles or gunk to enter them. So pay close attention to the fluid reservior level & keep it topped up when bleeding the system.

I thought they had to hook up the ABS thru a computer and trigger it to shudder ,
in order to bleed , or is that to do a complete flush ???

Perhaps in order to remove air bubbles in the ABS unit.

To bleed an ABS equiped commodore or even to flush the whole system with new brake fluid is no different to a Non abs car.
Get rid of the old fluid from the res, wipe it out to remove all the shit and then top it up with fresh fluid. Start bleeding the system and keep topping up the res.

Haven't read the entire thread but the thing to remember is "don't let the reservoir run dry @ all!" Bled abs brakes manually many many many times & not once required a tech 2 to open abs to bleed them!

Guy's thank alot for the info, I have bled brakes many times before but only one of those had ABS,this system did not turn out great and due to this I thought that ABS had to have a different procedure and this thread has put me at ease and has given me confidence to tackle my GTS.
