i want to use a custom avatar, the pics i have are not within your specs, can i modify my pics so they are within your specs? if so howzit done?

you can do this using MSPaint that comes with Windows.
1. open the picture
2. resize it with menu option Image->Stretch/Skew
3. Save As into GIF format

There are better graphics programs to use, but you will definitely have a copy of MSPaint (assuming you are a Windows user of course).
