Im doing a Hillclimb at Haunted Hills soon and have a set of 20" supersports to use on my VE SSV. Im buying 2 Nitto NT-05 tyres and was thinking of putting them on the rear. Now im thinking to put them on the front for better turn in.??? Still not sure which way to go. My other tyres will be 60 % tread Pirelli P zero nero.
The track is mostly 2nd gear twisty tarmac. Lots of elevation and on and off camber corners.

So should a go for rear end grip or front end turn in???

Cheers

i'd be putting them on the front , would much rather control/fight oversteer then understeering into a tree , be safe and have fun

p.s. i think you'll be all over the place with 20's , drop down to 19's or 18's at the front , just my opinion

Is your car front wheel drive or rear wheel drive?

I would think your answer would be there....

XUV . I run 18" rims as daily rims now. They have good tyres on (Bridestone Potenza) but dont want to scrub them out. Thats what i did with the Supersports. They are now my 2nd set of rims for this type of stuff. I would have thought a 20" rim would be better on track as you wouldnt get as much sidewall flex.??

Fullysikk . I like the way you think. Ive run this track twice before and did have trouble getting power down.

Cheers

have you really run haunted Hills before???
I ask ...because if you have been there before you would not be asking.
you need BOTH at HH

I am not an expert there (having only done about 8 or so events)
but if serious, you need a full set of semi-slicks (which is what I run)

me at HH...

Great photos Smitty. Love the plates. I'm fairly sure ive driven the track. So i dug up a photo of me getting to the line.
To answer your question simply.......money money money. We all have budgets and that is mine. 2 tyres this event. maybe 2 tyres next event.
My tip for you to go quicker would be some suspension upgrades......got some body roll in the old girl :stick:

...cool
yeah money....
I buy 2nd hand semis from Commodore Cup guys...who bin them after one use.
saves money you see :)

the ol'girls has got the best suspension you can still put on an ol' VK
Adjustable castor bars, adjustable coilover suspension front and rear ( I use Lovells race springs)
plus its got a 30mm front bar and a 23mm rear bar big as you can go ...and the result?
the pics tell all - not much one can do except drive it !

You want some sidewall flex, it means the tyre distorts to the shape of the road for maximum grip. When it comes to track work, go for the smallest rim that will clear your brakes. (usually 17 or 18")

20s are far too expensive and heavy.

I would go front. I found the VE and its weight really push the front wide once street tyres heat up. You will have to modulate the throttle a bit more but it will be fun.

Also you will be able to brake later, as the fronts do most of the work.

Thanks for the responses. Ill have to agree with the semi slicks going on the fronts. There are a few corners ill need full throttle out of a corner but most will need front end grip. There will be a few commodores out there so we will see . I might swap half way through for a proper comparison.
We are doing the track in reverse as a figure 8 Smitty.

geezers why do organisers do that..???

the last 2 times an event has been run there in reverse ... I know of 2 serious accidents
simply caused by running the event the wrong way!

the corner run offs, even around the finish line there is no room for anything
slightly off line so...just take it easy

Yeah plenty of off camber corners and the finish line will be interesting. Don't worry I have to drive it home and I have experience on my side. Your right I don't know why they would do it all day. We will see.
Cheers.

I would think your answer would be there....

Which end does most of the braking and all of the steering?

But like said before, I'd be going for a full set or taking it very, very easy - which kind of ruins the fun.

yeah..interesting alright!

in reverse, you have an off camber uphill righthander to negotiate just before the finish line.

One of the accidents I mentioned was when a guy ( on slicks ) , did not make that corner...he went straight on
(understeer you see) at full noiz into the metre high concrete wall on the lh side of the track. He got a ride in an ambulance...

just take it easy....

Well i just home from HH. Rained for the morning sessions. First 6 runs. Then the last 3 were dry. Had a ball and went with the semi slicks on the front which i think worked well. Only 2 cars had crashes for the day which is not bad for the wet then damp conditions and especially doing the Reverse figure 8 course. Great track. I think i liked it better than the normal way. Now its time for 2 more tyres for the rear.......and some brakes........it never ends. Ha ha

Thanks for the input
