So it's time for a new TV and entertainment system. My current TV is a 55 Inch Samsung and about 6 years old. Struggles turning on but overall has been an excellent TV.

Now I checked out a few tele's but I am so confused as to which direction to go.

Money will not be the contributing factor but saving some on a purchase is always good.

now I have seen a LG dual play tv which allows you to play 2 player games with no split screen. Instead each player wears a set of glasses and you can only see your screen. Without glasses you will most likely have an epileptic fit from the distorted screen.

Has anyone bought one or know if the tv overall is anygood?

i know in today's time that the Samsung tv's are meant to be better but what TV should i really buy.

All i want is a big ass TV with High Definition and it's main purpose is watching movies, sport, news and playing ps3 from time to time.

Any help much appreciated.

We've got last years Samsung LED, UA55D8000. (this years model has been updated)

A summary of the top of my head.

Excellent pic in Bluray movies, I think one of the best pics. (reason we purchased it)
Older lower definition DVDs / TV is nicer to watch on our old 720p plasma (50inch screen), this issue may be on all larger LCD/LED screens.
The built in usb movie player refuses to play a lot of movies.
Connects to wifi no problems, never had an issue.
Browsing the web is soo slow due to slow hardware. Basically we have given up on it, and everytime we go into it, it does updates that take a while.
3D effects are mostly behind the screen, aka look like they are through the wall, rather than coming forward from the screen.
The 3D glasses are dark, I would prefer a shade lighter. Also any daylight causes a flickering sensation. They do fit excellent over my prescription glasses.
The 2D to 3D upscaling works good in nearly 50% of the movies.
Sound system is ok for a tv, but an external home theater is needed for movies.
We got a Samsung home theater setup at the same time, and it integrates very well.

One of my mates has recently got a LG tv (not sure of the model)
I like the borderless design when the tv is off, but I find it has a thicker black border once the tv is on. (maybe this is because the screen mode?)
Sound is on par
I prefer the Samsung pic
I haven't watched 3D on his screen to compare.

Hope this helps

If it's main selling point is the Dual Play and your main use is watching TV or Movies im not sure why you're so interested in this particular TV.
I've given up on LG products, they usually look the goods with nice panels and reasonable prices but they aren't as good as others. I went from a LG to a Panasonic V series and it shits all over the LG in every way. Im a fan of plasmas for there natural looking picture and will probably stick with Panasonic unless something drastic happens, although i don't minnd the samsungs either.

In a nutshell i'd avoid the LG especially if you can afford something else and look past the gimmicks that you will rarely use.

I've got a new LG 55" 3D LED. Picture is great. Blueray's are unreal (i've never loved Saving Private Ryan so much lol). 3D is good, and comes out of the TV, not goes behind as Kev described. I haven't bothered to hook it up to the wifi yet as I have no need for it.

Samsung seems to be the best selling brand for the biggest screens atm, but if i was in the market for a big screen (like 65' or more) I'd be leaning towards Panasonic VT50 plasma. Sony are also making a come back. Their new HX850's really are a very good LED LCD and a better one than either Samsung or Panasonic make imo.

Here's how i'd go about deciding. I figure that all of these tv's will rock your world in Bluray. PS3\ Xbox games are bitchin too. DVD's will be a little less in quality but still satisfying. Hi Def broadcasts will be good. Standard def broadcasts will be fairly to very ordinary - and what do you watch the most of? If it is Std def then you need to get a recording of a std def show (doesn't have to be a full episode - better again if you can get a collection of 20-30sec clips of the standard shows you watch and edit them together) and stick it on a usb stick and take that in with you. Sales dude\ dudette will have no issues in you playing it. Pick the one that looks the best to you.

If it does a good job in showing std def - it'll do a great job will any def that's higher.

Cheers
Chris

51" Samsung series 5 3D plasma here. Got it very cheap from bigbrownbox and it is an awesome tv for the price. Great picture for sport and darker movies, 3D works well. I don't notice any ghosting or pixelating etc. Definitely no complaints but not sure how it goes with gaming.

I've been quite impressed by Samsung overall. I usually don't stick to one brand but have their tv, theatre, phone and soon their ultrabook. They all integrate very well as you'd expect, not sure if it all works just as well with other brands thrown in.

What is your budget?
What is the ideal size that you are after? 50"? 55"? 60"? ...etc

You mentioned the key word of sport, so instantly I would seriously only be considering plasmas.

I recently purchased one of these to replace our Panasonic Viera.

The amount of individual tweaking available on this TV is PHENOMENAL. I would NEVER have considered an LG except for a tip off I received about this model, and I am glad I got it.

Haggle it down - I got mine for $1299 with 2 HDMI cables and a cleaning kit thrown in and it is superior to the Panny in all aspects.

My usage is Xbox/PC monitor and movie playback for 90% of the time, the rest is TV playback (sport events, cartoons).

Thanks for all the info guys, I'll be shopping around some more tomorrow.

Good idea about the usb Raptor :D

Illucid does that LG have the dual play? If so what are your thoughts?

Do you guys reckon it's just a crap gimmick or holds some good value. I'd love to be able to play multiplayer games with a whole screen rather than sharing it with someone right next to me especially when you know they are looking at your screen!!!

I'd marry my Panasonic VT series Plasma if I could, I never really liked LED, picture always felt saturated and unnatural - great for animated movies, but I found the plasma was better at normal flicks. I did months of homework, went in bent on buying a Samsung, walked out with the Pana - at the end of the day I wanted a TV to do what a TV should do well, not an over sized tablet.

For the purpose you have stated a Plasma is definitely a better option for you, better contrast ratio, better blacks and of course no motion blur.

My pic would def have to be the Viera Panasonic, not the cheap end though it must be a "VT" series. Pioneer were for a very long time regarded as the crème de la crème of big screen TV's, they have sold there technology to and alot of their engineers now work for Panasonic.

Samsung make a very nice panel as well but the Panasonic is better in almost every aspect but aesthetics.

I dont believe it does have that feature, but i never use splitscreen anyway. I play all multiplayer online. Also remember that none of the retailers tune their TVs properly, so there is no proper way to test instore. The best way is to find the TV you like and then research its tweaks on the Net. Take those tweaks back with your USB full of HD pr0n and tweak instore and see if you are happy then. Most shops wont mind you tweaking as they reset to default anyway

Most TV's are set to a Demo/shop mode for use in retailers ie. brightness and contrast set high with settings that generally work well under fluorescent lighting

Ok so i finally decided and got such a good price from a mate of mine who is the store manager at Bing Lee. 3% mark up!

got the LG55LM7600 which is the 55inch LG LED LCD Smart 3D TV. Could not be happier. The picture is not as crisp as a Samsung but the dual play feature and 3D is outstanding. Looking for some tweaks at the momnet but must say I'm super Impressed and it's definately a major step up from my older previous Samsung.

Sorry to reply so late in the fold and I dont want to belittle your purchase (this is not my intention) as I am a big LG fan and have a 60 inch LG TV that I love. but I was at harvey Norman last night and saw one of these dual play TVs set up with Forza ? set up as a demo for the dual play. Maybe it was the glasses or maybe my eyes are getting bad but I couldnt get it to work well, I could still see the silhouette of the other players car over mine.

I thought that this feature was going to be awesome, and was looking at buying one for this feature alone but I was left underwlemed to say the least. Have you had a chance to test the dual play feature yet Becauz and what do you think of it?

Tried it out on the weekend with the worlds shittest game and was blown away, it made us play the game for over an hour. Dont even know what it was called but it was the only two player we could find at the time. I'll try it a bit more in depth this weekend and let you know but my first impression i was amazed.

I did seem to notice the silhoutte but only when i was close to the screen. My mate also told me it works best in a room with minimal lighting which is just how i enjoy playing games!

ah cheers for the feedback that would explain alot, I was in Harvey Norman with heaps of residual light around from the lights and other TVs and I could get more then 1.5M away from the screen (55inch)

1 HDMI port. That's pretty ordinary these days

Our 3 - 4 year old Panasonic 42" plasma only has 2 HDMI ports and even that's a hassle. No way I'd buy one with less than 3.

I am not sure why you need more than 1. The amp has 6, surely everyone is running proper HT setups in 2012?

Well that depends on what amp your running then. Not all amps carry thru 1080p, instead they dull it down to 1080i.

hence why I said "proper" HT, not one of the $600 JB specials.

Why do TV's have speakers? And not everyone has new amps, as really audio equipment has a far longer life cycle than TV's.

At min I would like 3 on a TV. One for AMP, one for PS3, one for Apple TV. I have one at the moment, but my TV is 7 years old back when HDMI was just starting to become common. Every TV I've looked at in recent years has multiple.

Sorry I just assumed that people running PS3 or other HD content would be also slashing out the 2-3K to get audio that suits.

I couldn't imagine playing games or movies through shitty 10W speakers, it just lessens the experience too much.

A suitable AMP can be picked up off of ebay reasonably cheap - I sold my old Onkyo for $50.00 and it had 5.1 and HDMI 1.3 switching. Of course you still need speakers and an sub, but if budget is tight, they can be picked up cheap too.

We had a perfectly good Yamaha that was around 8 years old but when we upgraded to our 55" LED Samsung we bit the bullet and replaced the AMP (to another Yammy with HDMI).

Our TV is mounted on the wall (very very close.... Flat out even fitting your hand between the two) and all cabling is through the wall so adding an extra device would be a nightmare without the AMP.

The only thing running to our TV is power and a single HDMI cable. (Our TV has Wireless N so no Ethernet cable required).

Everything runs to the AMP (Foxtel, Bluray, Apple TV, Laptop Dock).

I wouldnt take HN as gospel

according to LG's site on the specs it has 3 HDMI ports

+ its recommended retail is $1099. Poor old Gerald Harvey complaining no one is buying from his stores - no wonder when your price is $100 dearer then RRP :weirdo:

I just went through putting mine on the wall. I ran bullnose wall plates to feed the cables behind the wall meaning I can run anything I want. Audio plugs at each corner too.

I also have CAT 6 wall plates. One on the floor for the PS3, and one behind the TV for later when I get a smart TV. WiFi doesn't cut it for me. Its fine as one or two devices. But load it up with HD Video over multiple devices and it falls on its arse.

which AMP did you get? I replaced my Onkyo with a marantz slim line unit last year and it is not quite as good as what I thought it would be so I am looking again (dual sub if possible).
