Hi everyone, just thought Id do a bit of a write up as a tribute to the VY model which turned 10 years old this month.

It's September 2012, which means the first VY Series Commodores are 10 years old. First released in September 2002.

When first released, it was met with some critisisim about its new triangular tailight design, as well as the sharper new look front and rear not going well with the old rounded VT mid section. But these were forgotten after a little while, and many rate the VY as one of the best looking models, especially the SS, Ute, and HSV models.

Engines carried over from the VX, The the standard 3.8 Ecotec V6 was unchanged at 152kW, While the Gen 3 LS1 V8 had its output upped to 235kW and later 245kW in the SS models, Others retained the 225 kW VX spec output. The VY was also the last to have the Supercharged V6, While Good, they are sort of an underated and forgotton engine these days. Probably because it was never offered with a manual trans, as well as being overshadowed by the big Gen 3.

In regard to colours, Hothouse green is probably the first colour that springs to mind when people think about VY's. Was the hero colour when VY was released. It was sort of a love it or hate it colour. (I like it myself) Well looked after examples in this colour are still a head turner. But there still are critics of it as well. Cosmo purple was the Series II hero colour.

The VY made for a great looking ute as well, especially the SS. Was also a limited run SS wagon spread across the two series. This model also brought back the One Tonner and introduced the Adventra AWD wagon and the Crewman utility which was well received, but many critisied it for having a small rear seat not really suited for adults. Good kids seat though

happy birthday to you, happy birthday to.... so on and so forth. :D

I remember when the VY came out, was around the time my interest in cars started, and I remember me and a few mates sayin "geez they are ugly, yuck'. But like anything they grow on you, especially when you see a few HSV variants cruising around, opinions soon changed.

Yip, means my VY SS is coming up to 10 years old now. Certainly getting on a bit, but still reckon they look pretty good. And with mine being Hothouse I can agree that its a love it or hate it colour and seeing other Hothouse VY's always gets my attention. I think Holden released the VY SS's in Hothouse before the other colours

When they first came out I used to hate the design (being a one eyed ford supporter at the time didn't help!)

It's funny how things change as I now love the VY/VZ shape and my first Holden was a black series 2 VY SS back in 2007.

Most Commodore models are remembered fondly at various times.
To my eyes the VT (then Monaro) were the most "pure" from a styling perspective.
Note that I said from a "styling" perspective, NOT from a "fashion" perspective. The mix of angles and curves was clearly a facelift package.
The VY dash design was vastly better than the VT slab.
The VY utes did look good, but that was more because they (mostly) took away that mix of front/rear angles and side curves.

At the time, It even made a small section of the front page of the Queensland (Brisbane) Courier Mail regarding the critisisim the tailights had caused.

Much vy ss love here, mainly because I own one.

Yep same here, Love my VY SS Ute. :yup:

Yeah I too thought the VY was butt ugly when released, specially as the VX (to this day in my opinion) is the best looking Commodore. However over the years the VY look grew on me and after going from a VT to VY I now love the look of the VY, its an aggressive looking car with a great stance. The interior was also miles better in the VY, better gearbox, more feedback from steering, better seats, stronger LS1. The VY was and still is a great package

OMG Davo, I think we've found something to agree on.

Personally I like the VY instruments over the VT, but prefer the VT Climate control and stereo over the VY as its more rounded if you get what I mean.

That was my first V8 after having a Calibra for ten years. I'll never forget the power of the V8 when I took it home. A few mods, SS bodykit and custom leather with SV8 stitching on each seat made it a head turner back then. Still nice looking cars the VY/VZ.

I joined this forum shortly after buying my vy, but i was an anonymous lurker for a couple of months before.

I still have my Hothouse VY SS UTE along with personalised plates, some 10 years later.

It's had multiple engine combinations over the years. Unfortunatly it's been off the road for the past 2 years with no engine/gearbox.

But that's about to change as it get's it's final engine combo.. 410ci, Mast Big bore heads and twin Gtx35's. :-)

I drove a mate's 2002 monaro back to back with my VY 2 SS, his had 30,000km and mine had 140,000km both m6
The steering in the VY had miles more feedback and the shift in the gearbox was a hell of a lot more positive in the VY
The seats in the VY were generally a bit bigger with higher backs, much more comfortable in my opinion.

Good post. This year I bought one of the limited edition VY SS wagons, and I reckon it's a keeper.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y243/kiwidave/VY%20SS%20wagon/9d02a16c.jpg

I had to pop into a dealership yesterday to pick up a new relay for the cooling fan, and I had a good peek in an around a new HSV version of the Sportwagon.

MAN, those things are tiny. No boot space at all!

I'm keeping mine

And I LOVE the hothouse green SSs. If only these wagons had come in hothouse green.........

Mine's in the shop getting a full detail , all those little fuking trolly dings and a nudge just behind the passenger mud , thanks to the dolt .

Comes back friday , yay .

anyway the XUV is a great rig , suits my needs and has a pressence and puts a grin on ya face .

Only annoying thing is the oil plug , who's the brain that said it'd be better sideways then underneath , shoots oil out about a metre when undone .

IS This the same on normal VY's or is it just on the All Wheel Drive Models ?

was and will be my only Brand new Buy.
had no interest in buying a new car as the VTS2 S pac was good, but after sharing the drive to Sydney in january 03 in a mates HOTHOUSE VY SS 6 M, i felt it shit all over the VT. and the fuel economy was better in the V8. so after a few weeks i started researching VY's. i didn't want the "SS" extras (insurance and looks)but wanted the V8. The SV8 fitted the bill, was about $8000 cheaper to buy and insurance was HALF price. i optioned up with full electrics and i think by doing that "CRUISE" came standard. plus had "SS" Front and side skirts fitted. i asked about a leather steering wheel and was told $600 for that! no was my answer:eyes: later found out if i had of ticked that box, i would have got FULL leather:mad:
it's had a few mods, and i feel each mod has improved the car.
in order :2.5 catback, Rip shift, mafless tune, 3.9's, 4 into 1's some 19 inch rims and recently 1.9 ratio rockers and underdrive pulleys.
it's a keeper! will be giving to my Son for his 18th Birthday, damm it's only another 8 years and 3 weeks for that:doh:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v157/87vlexec/VYSSUte6.jpg

First bought it in March 2010 as a one owner and stock standard. I have since done subtle mods like HSV airbox, HSV VYII Extractors, Manta 2.5" twin system, HSV binnacle gauges, and VZ engine covers. Thats probably all Ill do to it as I want to keep the stock, original look. Although Id like a mafless tune done for it one day, and maybe the bigger 18" VY SS wheels as the utes only got the 17 inchers, and maybe even the HSV brakes. If anyone wants to view the full thread about it here it is - http://www.ls1.com.au/forum/showthread.php?134409-VL-Exec-s-2004-VYII-SS-Ute (http://www.ls1.com.au/forum/showthread.php?134409-VL-Exec-s-2004-VYII-SS-Ute)

I love it, and it will never leave my ownership
