Hi guys,
I'm looking at sourcing a GPS unit for the VE, and I'm hoping you can provide some advice as to what is good and what is not. I would like something that can either be hard wired into the battery or have its own battery, geo fencing, mobile tracking, and I would prefer no monthly fees.
So far I have looked at:

+1 for Tony (HSV Listy). I have both one of his GPS trackers and an in car black box video. The important thing with him is he provides excellent support so even though you may save a few dollars buying elsewhere (may not as he looks after LS1 members) if you have any issues he looks after you.

I can check the whereabouts of my car at any time by just ringing the SIM card and hanging up and it returns an SMS which displays automatically on my phone in maps plus it has the fencing option you require, which I'll probably never use.

From memory it also comes with one year included online tracking through your browser but at minimal cost I upgraded to three years.

Also has the option of cutting the fuel pump by SMS which is illegal in Australia so I had it wired to perform a not so dangerous function which should make the thieves bail out!

Found this in the jaycar flyer today in the mail. looks the goods. If it was me I would wire it into the cars power supply. If you can find someone to do it looks like a good thing.

Quiktrak is great. Has all the features you want. Ongoing costs are 180 bucks per year for the basic monitoring package. Awesome product.

Quiktrak does look good, but I'm not overly keen on monthly costs. Do they have a pricing structure on their site?

quiktrak is not worth it at all. super expensive and only works in capital areas. so doesn't work everywhere

mine works by me sending an SMS to it and it replies with a Link which opens in Google Maps. About the engine lockout option, illegal or not, i've got that option. if i see them driving away, i'm going to cut it so they can't get too far, after all, these things don't work if they get the car into a shielded building or somewhere with no mobile coverage.

I thought of hooking mine up so it kills the engine but I wouldn't want to get in trouble somewhere because the module has some how stuff up and cut the pump out. looks like it'll be good to go. not to mention to could tell it to cut the pump while on holidays or during the night and then you'll know it'll never be driven away while in your care even with the keys.

I dont see how it should be illegal, people are driving all the time and the car dies on them, you just pull over to the side.

Is it illegal because the thieving wanker who stole your hard earnt car might have an accident?

Cutting engine you loose power assisted items = brakes...

Perhaps get tricky with the electronics, you could enable a rev limit set really low, gear lock out, even make the lights flash uncontrollably (would be good during the day, the thief wouldn't even know the attention being drawn to them).

Hook it up to a Jaycar screecher alarm in the cabin. It'll be enough for them to stop wherever they are and get out real quick.

Do your research. The Quiktrak system of today is totally different to what it was 10 years ago. It works anywhere you can get Telstra mobile coverage. $180 per year for the basic package. Installation costs are on top of this bit are a one off. Ring them and ask for Yanddy. He is their tech wiz and basically invented the new system. I had the old Quiktrak in my car in 1999 and this is very different. The web portal rocks.

I did do my research on them about a year ago. there only limited to Telstra's 3G network so me with my cheaper module, compared to quiktraks expensive module plus monitoring fees. I use the same network, Telstra! except heaps cheaper. go figure.

Ok so we now agree Quiktrak is not cheap but works everywhere you get Telstra mobile coverage. I'm very happy with the service and don't mind spending a couple of hundred a year for it. Considering what the car costs me to run, it is a small price to pay. The old Quiktrak nearly went busy many years back and it was taken over by a new mob. The issue you said about coverage in capital cities only is definitely a thing of the past.

Can someone help me out and explain the cellular frequencies. I'm looking at a new tracker because I keep getting a letter saying I'm using the 2g network however to me the frequency in the one posted in my link runs mainly on 2G and some 3G is that right? I'm wondering if mine is exactly the same, but I wouldn't know how to check.

More than likely your carrier will eventually dump 2G & 3G.

Well 2G has been dumped. I should be good for a year or so on 3G I would imagine. However I'm just wondering if the above suits 3G or not as it doesn't have the 2100 band on there

FWIW Optus are running 2G till April and Vodafone till October or November from memory. That's what I'm doing with my car alarm (2G) to extend its life. 😊

I'm pretty sure I read that 3G is good till 2020.

Not overly interested in changing carriers, want something that will actually run on 3G or better.
Reading on a jaycar one it looks like it has the same freq bands as the one I posted but it says can use 3G sim but only runs on 2G.

Ok doing a bit of research and it turns out the trackers that we have aren't 3G compatible even the new ones as they are only gsm/gprs. Would need wcdma which is 3g network

Found a new unit, runs on 3G hopefully lol. Seems to do similar to the old unit except doors and remote control which I wanted but nothing really did it that I could see.
This one comes with an app for phone. And movement sensor aswell I think

It's due to arrive in a couple days and I'll fit it when I can I guess. And can give an update if anyone wants lol
