So my 6 week old Alienware laptop died, and I need to get an mSATA to SATA adapter to get the data off before the laptop is binned.
I have found some on eBay but just wondering if anyone has used one that they recommend.

12 Month Warranty but they won't accept it back without the HDD, and I can't send it with the HDD due to the nature and type of work. The data is worth more than the Hardware unfortunately.

Hmmm, seems most of those cases are from O/S which could be a slight problem.
If your laptop is dead you could remove it and keep it - I assume you lost the motherboard?

I think the motherboard is fried. Did all the usual suspect things to do regarding power drain, no battery boot, hold down D and boot etc, and nothing. Can't get to BIOS.
I just need the Data I have been out and bought a replacement M17x this morning.

And your new one has a mSATA card in it?
Time for a swap over.

I want to try the opposite way first (naturally) .. A swap is too easy :)

I'd be going with the swap, I am visualising myself screwing around with it for far longer than changing it would take if I was in your situation.

Just pony up for it, worst case is you have lost $15.

Try swapping Ram modules. IE try it with one module then switch on, if no response, try the other module.
oh and if youre serious about chucking it, send it me ill make good use of it. and ill pay postage

I bought the connector from ebay off this seller (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/290343348783?nma=true&si=MpPjiOryCeD0ck0gbZdFBYbfO6E%3D&rt=nc&_trksid=p4340.l2557&orig_cvip=true#ht_500wt_923)
Landed it cost $12.60
I couldn't find anything locally at the time which was in stock, and less than $50. Weird.
I was given a SSD as the place said it was broken and couldn't get it working. SSD's don't respond to external caddies, so it was well received :)

Been working solidly ever since.
EDIT: Kurt, if you want to try my adapter, I'm happy to post it to you. At least you'd have an answer in the two day postage timeframe

Thanks Dan for the offer mate, and everyone else's advice.
Fortunately, I picked up a piece of kit from a contact at the AFP and have recovered 100% of my data.
I also spoke to Dell, and after 2 hours and 3 people, they have authorised a tech to make a house call on the laptop and see if he can fix it on the spot. If not, he will take the unit sans mSATA and the HDD.
So in the end it has all worked out well - so instead of binning it, I will get a replacement which I will sell off.

Pretty sure they have an in home warranty ie they come to your house.....
They'll simply transfer over the data you need from the old to the new! Good thing about buying a premium Dell product.
p.s. for future reference get yourself an external HDD and backup critical items to that! (but i'm sure you already knew that) :hide:

Hang on - the M14x has a 650m . the M17x has a GTX 675M.
The m14x will get sold off for less than half it's cost.

The laptop has dual HDD and the second drive was where the backups to VHD go. So I had all data from the last backup there (9th Oct)
10, 11 October data was on the mSATA - lazy practice not to backup.
I have a couple of TB drives in the home server, and they see a decent backup regime. Still it was the mSATA that caught me out this time. Not next time though :)

out of curiousity, was it not possible to DBAN the old mSATA SSD once you had the data off? (not that I've tried it on an SSD yet). (for less headaches)

Didn't go that route. Did for the HDD, fortunately SSD is a little smarter when deleting as it only needs a solo pass to delete data using other tools.
