Hey again guys. Im just sorting out the cooling system piping for my VZ LS2. Just trying to work out what goes where

http://i1262.photobucket.com/albums/ii620/whitewarrior999/DSCF6236Small.jpg

I got the bottle from a MX6 at the wrecker, seemed to have the same number and size of ports as the VT-VZ ones i had seen. It has a 21 PSI cap, dont know if that will be suitable...

I was thinking:

1 goes to 3 (small metal line)
2 goes to 7 or 8
4,5 and 6 get joined with a Y piece of some sort
the other from 7 or 8 goes to the road? or blocked?

or i could lose the bottle and join 4 and 5, 1 to 3 and 2 to the road or a bottle/tank, but i was keen to try and keep the recovery cooling system but to be honest im not really sure how it works...

Thanks again

Couldn't help myself, but Mazda 3's & LS2's just don't mix!!

i see your point ;) but i kind if see it like the LS2 is pissing into the mazda's bottle, that i can live with.

the problem you goin to have is the fact the rad has a cap on it. The system you took that header tank of doesnt run a cap except on that tank.

anyway
6 goes to 5 on the early systems.
7 or 8 goes to 2
block 4 of if your not running a heater if you are t peice hose five so you have a supply from the tank( number 6) and a supply to heater and 4 is your return for your heater.

You can run 1 to either 7 or 8 but the problem there will be i could introduce air into the rad as it may pull air from the top of the header tank into the rad, you realy need a blanking cap that only has the very top seal of the rad cap this way there is no issue. There is a blanking cap you can use that goes onto mini but i dont know the part number.

Failing that use a vt-vy rad, they use a header tank system normaly so no rad cap.

Clear as mud??

4 and 5 are linked in a VZ through the heater tap and form the bypass when the heater is closed.

Would be much easier if you get a VZ Recovery tank as JRS has noted you have the VZ Radiator so 2 will go into the Tank.

Thanks guys,

So maybe i need the VZ recovery tank... I was a bit confused about which it is...

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Commodore-VT-VX-VU-VY-VZ-Coolant-Overflow-Bottle-Reservoir-Tank-Holden-Radiator-/320899329286?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4ab7172d06 is listed for VZ in some places, but not others, and for v8

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HOLDEN-HSV-COMMODORE-VT-VU-VX-VY-VZ-OVERFLOW-BOTTLE-REMOVED-VY-6-/321005322861?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4abd68826d is the other one listed, i thought this was for a 6

Which do i want? or am i totally of the mark here...

The second one Gareth, 1st one is the same as my VY, 2nd the same as my VZ.

It's important you have 4 and 5 connected if you're not running a heater as I mentioned it's the bypass.

Ahh ok, i thought those were a regular type coolant bottle and didn't recover back into the system, so i assume they vacuum the coolant back in or something? They only have one hose going into them eh? from port 2 in my picture

Yep it's all in the Rad Cap :)

Yeah the VZ system is much simpler, I think you'll be surprised how much the tank is from Holden as well.
(Z plastic parts tend to be very cheap new)

Buy the genuine hose as it's formed 90 degree and larger diameter on one end, the other end has the grommet for the tank glued to it and this sets it's depth, tank also has an overflow hose on it and a dipstick built into the cap.

ok thanks, while im there is the genuine hose that goes from 1 to 3 a similar thing with different sizes at each end? the sizes are quite different

Yes there is and again it's a formed hose with a 90 on it, I've been following your build (enjoying it so far thanks), I don't post much here but figured I could help on this question! :)

Thanks for posting! yeah the factory one might not be long enough as my rad is further forward, but probably cheap enough to try. Actually ill check my father in laws car, should get some idea

had a look at a VZ bottle, would be a pain to fit into my engine bay i reckon.... would something like this be just as good?

That's correct the VZ style rad/overflow is really just a primitive GM style setup with the ported Rad cap to scavenge or dump coolant in response to the rad's requirements.

LOL as you mentioned earlier Gareth you could use a coke bottle ;)
