hi there i have a v6 that i am changing to chev style v8 but confused with the codes on the id tags can someone please let me know the diferences from ls1 le0 l77 l76 etc as i want a reliable chev with some sort of economy low end but reasonable performance when booted to fit into vs statesman

thanks it explains most but not what an leo code is or could it be a gmh motor as in 308 or stroker of it

LE0 is an Alloytec V6.
Check out this list. It's huge, but go to around pages 80-90, where you'll see all the engine codes starting with L...

I suspect it's not really the answer you are looking for though. You would be better off googling the different Holden models, which will tell you what engine codes were fitted, or, you might be better off doing searches on engines that other people have used in their conversions, before you create a massive headache for yourself.

thats almost perfect just with little more description but i can sort out from here just need to define ausie v8 from chev v8 but great help thanks
looking at some of the writeoffs engine must have been changer as one leo but definately v8 in it

Injected cast iron Aussie V8’s.
LB9- 5.0 V8 engine in non HSV's.
L98- HSV 5.7 stroker V8 in VR-VT1 (not to be confused with imported alloy L98 Gen 4 V8 used in some late VZ and VE’s).
XX1- option code for HSV 180/185kW version of LB9 5.0 litre V8 in VN-VS.
XX3- option code for HSV 195kW version of LB9 5.0 litre V8 in series 3 VS and VT1.
