Hey all,

Driving the SSV yesterday, overtook a slower vehicle and noticed that when the slow, clunk-fest that is the auto box finally decided to shift back to second, after eating a packed lunch, all was usual...however when the revs went over 4,000 rpm this metallic, whirring, whining noise was evident outside (had the windows open), once the revs dropped below 4,000rpm, noise stopped. Through the rest of the rev range below 4,000rpm, nothing....repeated the and the same again...only been able to make the noise in second gear.

Hard to explain what the noise actually sounded like, had a search on here, but nothing to match. I could say it does sound like a really noisy stuffed bearing...but if it was a bearing I would assume this noise would be constant and not stopping and starting.

Hoping to take it to my mechanic soon, but hoping some of the tech gurus may be able to help me identify the issue, could be something simple that I could fix, but I doubt it.

Car is stock as a rock...just hoping it's not the Auto...

Cheers

Jack the car up and put it on four stands. Crawl underneath and grab the tail shaft. Push pull on the shaft - if there is any movement it could be one of two things. The rubber donut (one at the front connects to gearbox, one at the diff) could be rat sh*t, or it could be as simple as the centre support bracket (tail shaft is two piece) may have worked body bolts loose, or the support rubber bearing is R/s - so at a certain RPM it rattles. These are the cheapest and easiest to fixes I have had to make to driveline issues with mine, anything internal is going to be moving up the scale for cost and DIY.....

When was the last time you had the box serviced?

What year, how many kays does the car tow stuff etc?

IMHO.. If it still keeps making the noise and only in second gear it does sound as though it could well be transmission related,
I think you should take it to somebody and get it checked out.
