Just after advice on wether I can lower my ss with just new springs and the original fe2 shocks.
The car is brand new so shocks are all good. But I'm not sure if there's any probs that can arise from doing just springs.

Cheers

There is no reason why you can't just put in lower springs, however I would recommend spending a little more in one hit and getting shortened shocks aswell.

The standard FE2 shocks don't have enough rebound and tend to bottom out a fair bit and give a fairly harsh ride as a result. I did springs only first up, then ended up spending more money in labour to get shocks installed later. Made a huge difference, softened up the ride, tookl out almost all the rebound issues and improved handling. Shortened shocks also come with shorter bump stops to increase shock travel.

How low do you plan on going? If only SL you may get away with standard shocks. If SSL, I'd get shocks too.

If it was me, new shocks and springs in one hit. If budget permits, Coilovers are a good investment too. Hope this is of help.

Also plenty on here if you use the search button.
Regards,

Hos

I lowered my car with H&R Springs on the stock shocks. Bad idea. 3 Months later I put coilovers on. It rode like crap!

Thanks guys. Looks like I'm saving some more. There's a couple of spring plus shocks packages on eBay with Monroe gt shocks for a good price.
Anyone using this setup and are the Monroe's any good.

I've got king spring SP4's in mine with standard shocks... the ride is average at best (ride was better in my VT with SSSL on standard hsv shocks) only reason I haven't put shortened shocks in is I only drive 15km a day, but they are definitely on the cards

As Hos said, if you only go SL (why bother?) you might get away with stock shocks but anything more definitely do shocks as well. Also far cheaper than doing springs only then deciding you're not happy and turning around and paying $200+ in duplicate labour to fit the shocks. I had King SSLs on my SSV sedan with stock FE2 shocks for about a year before Monroe released the GT short shocks and there were certain roads it was almost dangerous on! Improved out of sight with the Monroes.

Thanks wonky. I had a good read of the thread you started a few years back. Gave me some good info. Now need to decide how low. No rush though.

I'd run SSLHD. The spring rates are a lot better for the heavy VE as opposed to SSL's. they sit around 5-10mm higher than SSL's but well worth it. A lot more controlled especially on the a$$ end and as others have said shortened shocks a def the go

Mate my advise to you is to do the shocks and select the best shocks you can afford, i did springs only SSL Front and SL Rears but was never happy with how the ride was. Was far to unsettled over bumps so went with Bilstein shocks and the difference is night and day, and to those who say SL dont drop the car my rear went from CTG 420mm to 365mm so a 55mm drop. This is on a VE2 SSV Ute btw

There is NO way a King SL spring "should" drop your height 55mm. They are supposed to be the same height as FE2.

Well heres a photo to show you how it sits. a mate has the same ute with SSL in the rear and his CTG for the rear were 345mm, i think you'll find the springs settle a lot further then the measurements that king quote

Unfortunately that seems to be a common problem with King springs. Don't know if it's a quality control problem or not but their springs often finish up way lower than they quote.

On http://www.kingsprings.com.au/photo_gallery/holden.htm they quote 370mm front, 365mm rear on SSL with Monroe shocks. My SSV sedan with the same combo ended up 330mm rear! Kings swapped them for new ones but once they'd been in for a while they ended up at just over 340mm. The SV6 with SSLs is quoted at 385mm front but 360mm rear. However the Omega with SL is quoted at 390mm front and rear so HsV_GTS_300's rear height of 365mm is about where SSL should be.
