Xforce is not the nicest sounding system IMO, very raspy and metallic even painful at wot, better off with a system from Castle Hill, Sureflow, KPM or even a HM system.
If you buy a cheap system in mild steel it'll rust out in no time, Sureflow's mild steel system are meant to be quite good but i would try and stick to stainless.
The drone can be there with or without the AFM but whilst running in AFM it is much worse, very few will guarantee "no drone" on their systems on AFM equipped cars. Try to listen to as many systems as you can and choose from there what fits in your budget and preference for sound.
P.S. Do the system in stages if you need to.

My mild steel catback was second hand when I got it 3 years ago - no holes from rust yet, even when it lives outside 24/7 and has had some big bumps! So what you are saying there is a complete falsehood
Anyway, back OT.
IMHO, you won't find a true "no drone" system for an auto VE - some are much better than others, but you will always have some of what people can call drone. I recently improved my auto VE Wagon with some Hooker Maximum flow mufflers being used as rear mufflers - a hard task to control drone in a cammed, stalled, auto wagon, and they are doing a decent job.
Stock mufflers on the rear of a full system control drone to an extent too - but then you don't have any volume at idle - with engine mods, it still sounds ok under load
If money was no object for me, I would go for a custom system with mufflers of my choosing to limit drone, but with a budget, the HM systems don't seem too bad
The HM APS Bimodal catback would go well also - just a little more expensive!

Actually what i am saying is based on FACT! I had a 2.5" cat-back of a "cheap" variety and it rusted out in 6 months. It's also not the only one i have seen and heard of doing it.
The type of trips you make in the car also affect the condensation build up as well and whether it gets burnt or left to sit, so it's not falsehood at all.
Like i said a good quality mild steel like the Sureflow will outlast one of the cheap ones of much lesser quality!
Out of curiosity what brand system do you run?

What i done on my WM Grange, was replaced my tailpipes from mufflers to straight out pipes.
Got to be honest, quite happy with the note, it was the cost of 2 pipes, i installed them myself in around 15 minutes and probably saved some good coin.

The drone I get with my KPM 3" gives me a headache... Not sure how I'll resolve this...

That is a sure fire recipe for maximum drone. You would of been better off keeping the resonators and going hotdogs on the mains

I fitted a "cheap" mild steel system to my car 6 years ago (with a decent set of extractors and hi flow cats)
and I have had no problems with it.
(I had it off the car a couple of months ago when I was doing some other work under the car and I checked it over and it is still in very good condition.)
I personally also prefer the tone of sound from a mild steel system over the sound of a stainless steel system. :hide:

Yep i would say it has alot to do with the short trips the car gets, allowing the condensation to gather internally. The KPM has had no such issues yet.

My second hand catback is a manta
Most of my trips are fairly short too
Anyway - see my first post for my opinions on VE drone

Hey mate,
I have just recently purchased a twin 3 inch stainless system from Sureflo Exhaust (sponsor) for my Ve Clubby. Now while my car is a manual I can honestly say that this system has no drone. It is just dead quiet in the car but sounds nice from out side and out the back. I also have 100cell Ballistic cats fitted but kept my standard HSV extractors. It was even quieter with the standard cats.
The only thing i will say about it is that it hangs a bit low in the centre and the back balance pipes. But my car is on SSSL king springs in the back so thats probably why.

Buddy, my SS only gets started and driven two or three times a month these days,
over winter it does not even get started for 6 weeks at a time.
(I never fill it with fuel because I don't want the fuel to go off, sometimes I have not even had to put fuel in it for 3 months.)
I have had it 6 years now and done less than 40,000kms since I have owned it,
it spends most of the time in my driveway.
I have another "daily" driver.;)
My "cheap" cat back part of the system is a Redback, (Australian made)

I was talking about the short trips my car does ie about 4km round trip most days. Xforce was rusted out in 6 months. KPM has had no such dramas

Fair enough...if this is drone what the guys on here are talking about, i actually like it, sounds fine and would do it again.
I suppose it comes down to taste on what you like on exhaust notes etc.....
My style of driving is up and down on the throttle, so maybe that is why i think it is ok...

I had a fair bit of drone from my 2 1/2 inch hurricane system mainly 1400 to 2000 rpm so I swapped the rear mufflers back to standard and no drone --- should have done it years ago. so unless they have changed the hurricane systems since i bought mine its gonna drone.

Thanks for your replys, sounds like a lucky dip.I think M/S system have a better note than SS but each to there own.Yeah i thought turning off the AFM would cure droning i thought when the engine hits 4 cyl you get the drone on fwy ways? But this is my first commy had heaps of hq 350 three in fact one auto 2 manual.

It will still drone in 8cyl mode with or without AFM activated - have a read of my first post in here

Not sure if it makes any difference but apparently Manta mild steel systems are made from aluminiumised steel

3" xforce catback with pacemaker headers and 200csi cats.. Auto with AFM disabled.
It drones.. Always thought 'oh it's not too bad'...
Then I started traveling long distances for work each week.. I wanted to gouge my ear drums out..
However I love the note it makes when I get on it.. So it's staying till after the cam goes in.. Then I'll decide..
On a side not a workmate has a VE SS manual.. With the rear mufflers replaced with hotdogs..
It drones worse then mine.

Maybe, but my other car has plenty of noise, full system etc, so i treat this one nearly as standard :)

To give you an idea. My stock system had the res replaced with straight through pipes. It sounded ok but droned like a mofo on the highway. My current system. Twin hotdog primary's and a pacey res is quieter at cruise due to no drone but its a shit tin louder everywhere else. I never really realised how bad my old system was till this one

I Had an Xforce system on my VX SS was cheap, bought the car with it on there. I had the car for just over 3 years doing nothing but short trips only covered 11,000kms in that time, the car was never garaged and the system was fine. It may come down to the actually production of the system could have two systems made one after another one could be a lemon and the other perfect.
in the case of x-force systems where they give you a choice of med-high or low-med volume, is the quieter system less likely to drone? would there be much of a difference in power output/restriction?

No choice for a quieter system in twin 3" on the xforce and the twin 2.5" has barely any drone.

On pre VE the DF system, especially in 3", is about the best sounding out there. :yup:

After many hours research and contacting four speed/exhaust shops about getting a decent sounding exhaust that wont drone and sounds real good im going with castle hill exhaust.
They were by far the most impressive. One stop shop full exhaust, otr and tune i'll be taking my car there January next year. The guys at best mufflers calton also sounded very good but im going with CHE.

Mate don't touch xforce, I was to impatient to save for a good one and have regretted it since (even more so since changinging diff gears cause now it drones like a b*#ch) I have been told hurricane is the way to go, no drone regardless of gears and rpm range!
