Interesting to read that GM in the US have renewed the 'El Camino' trademark.

I know this article is new, but apologies if this story is old as the trademark was renewed back in August.

THE homegrown Holden ute is almost certain to follow in the tyre tracks of its Commodore sedan stablemate and be exported to North America.
The Commodore will be sold in the US from next year as a performance sedan and now it seems the ute will follow soon after.
Reports out of the US claim that General Motors has renewed the trademark of the El Camino name, an iconic car-based Chevrolet pick-up sold between 1959 and 1977.
The classic 1970s El Camino has earned recent notoriety in the hit TV series My Name Is Earl and North American enthusiasts have longed for a revival of the iconic model.
The Holden ute was supposed to be exported to North America in 2009 - all engineering work was completed and the car was even unveiled by rapper 50 Cent at the New York motor show as a Pontiac.
But that deal ended before exports could begin because the brand was folded in the wake of the global financial crisis.
Holden spokesman Sean Poppitt told News Limited: "We haven't made a decision on the next generation ute or its presence in export markets outside Australia.
"However there is the free trade agreement between the US and Australia which means we are not precluded from selling Australian-made light commercial vehicles in the US market."
Foreign pick ups and utes rarely make it onto North American soil because they are subject to a 25 per cent import tariff. The US and Australia FTA means there is no tariff barrier.
The US website GM Authority reports that the Chevrolet El Camino trademark was renewed on August 9, 2012.
"Any speculation on the trademarking of the El Camino name is just that - speculation. However we are keeping our options open," the Holden spokesman said.

Would be huge news for them if that's the case. I know there's a large fan base for Holden based cars in the US having lived there for 7 years. A lot of their pickups have sports versions like the srt-10 ram, ford lightning and silverado ss...would be awesome to see the Holden Ute finally make its way there. Although there won't be a 25% tax on imports I'm curious to see the price comparison between our cars and theirs.

I think the Holden spokesman's comment about keeping their options open rings true, I'm a bit skeptical on this one, I don't think a Holden ute would actually sell that well in the US despite the internet support. It's a running joke on The Truth About Cars website that internet fanbois all want brown diesel manual wagons, but of course would never actually buy them.

Have a look on the Chevy website and build your own Silverado you can come up with a well specced Silverado regular cab, regular tray for less than $30K with the 5.3L vortec motor. The Pontiac G8 V8 GT 6.0L was around $30K back in 2008. A ute would be a bit cheaper but where's the market for sedan based utes? Americans prefer big F150 style pick ups. We prefer smaller sedan based utes. Different culture.

Let's just hope the SS Performance sells well enough such that GM decides to build a new Alpha platform SS Performance in 2018 and export them to Australia. Best case for Australia would be that GM allows ute and wagon versions to be built here while the sedan and Camaro coupe and convertibles get built over there and exported here.

BTW the 25% "Chicken Tax" won't apply to any utes exported to the US because of our Free Trade Agreement.

Cheers, Matthew

Holden would have to have engineered all 3 chassis (sedan, wagon, ute) surely for easy switch to LHD, offer them to the US and if they sell some, win.

A long wheel base Colorado with a V8 would be ideal,2 wheel drive and auto, hopefully cheaper than buying a new F150/250

The F150 and F250 are two different class of truck especially in comparison to a Colorado which lacks the option for a v8 in the states, however they should offer it because Ford had their Sportrac offered with a 4.6 v8 from the mustang.

Having been at a Christmas function this arvo I first thought this meant I should have posted this in an existing thread in the Technical section - but upon reading it after a couple'a 3 drinks I had listening to a CD I burnt for the neighbours to listen to from my garage...are you saying there is reference to this in GMH registers?

What does 2013 Chev [wildcard] bring up? In GMH, not GM?

Hi.
The true reason is the US tariff on imported utes which come under light commercial and attract 35% compared to a sedan of around 12%. Thats killed it for sure.

With the Australian and American Free trade Agreement this wouldn't be the case anymore.
