I love the title - it is a supercomputer - 128 GB of RAM - .
Editing obviously isn't what it used to be :)

rather a laptop at that price
It's not a "new" iPad at all. Same everything except 128gb storage. Even Apple states it's just an addition to the iPad 4 range.

Can you use an external hard drive to store iPad data on?

Not directly. But you can via wifi or use a multitude of online storage solutions or a pc tethered if you want to go old school. Transfer via wifi is upto 300mb/sec. It's fast enough

Compared to a theoretical speed of 10gbps using a USB 3.0 HDD over Thunderbolt it is.

No HDD can do that speed unless in raid or an SSD which few will do really in consumer large capacities. I have a NAS on my 1gbps network. The HDD housing is gigabit and so is my main computer. Fastest transfer speed I can get is ~40Mb/sec (~0.4gbps). Ie 0.1 faster than my wifi. Big deal. It's plenty fast enough to stream HD video. Which is what I believe most are after.

They are hardly ever "new" iPads. This is a new iPad as much as the retina screen was a new iPad.
Perhaps a revision is the better term, but the Apple quote "The new iPad will go on sale in Australia and the US on February 5...."
is theirs and not mine.
Regardless, you are expected to fork over and buy it to lift their plummeting share price ;)

That's only temporary ... on a price earnings of < 10 Apple is CHEAP!
Won't stay down for long ... unlike most other companies Apple doesn't need insane growth levels to justify the current valuations.

They are cannibalising their own markets though (iPad eating in OSX sales, iPad mini eating into iPad sales etc), with only a refreshed iPad and iPhone due this year, possibly iTV, so tough to see a significant rebound, especially in light of corporates looking to jump onto the Surface revolution.
Are any analysts saying to buy at the moment? General consensus I have read is to sell, and that the price is expected to settle $350-400.

Each new product may eat into other product total sales but what would you rather ... sell 50 million iphones or sell a combined 100 million iphones / ipads / ipad minis / etc.
I pay very little attention to what "analysts" say ... they all had "buys" on Allco Finance / ABC Learning etc. etc. etc. Most of them are idiots ...
Time will tell I guess!

Not great though - 40+% fall in less than 6 months. The wise people sold their shares months ago. I feel sorry for the people that couldn't see the bubble bursting last year that were paying 6-650 a share.
Remember Nokia used to be the kings of the world and their shares are around the $3 mark now .. Apple had its time too.

Apple have nearly $100B in cash reserves! They are hardly struggling. They make more revenue in one quarter than Google does in a year. Their super crazy growth has slowed and the more nervous investors are spooked - a bit silly really as Nick mentions with their PE ratio so much better than most companies. On the other side of the coin, I do think Apple need to step up and start moving faster as the electronics/mobile sector is moving very quickly at the moment and they risk pissing people off with taking too long to refresh iOS (it's looking antiquated to me now, even though it is still a lovely, slick OS). Lets hope iOS7 brings some serious new features to the table under Jonny Ive.

I would rather sell 100 million of an individual product and try to dominate a market.
The again, Samsung sell so many different variants that no product on its own can dominate, but as a whole, the company IS the dominant player across the globe, even outranking Nokia as the largest phone manufacturer in the world.

I very seriously doubt Apple are in any kind of trouble, let alone serious trouble, but no company is too big to fail. With regards to the shares, a very smart investor would have read all the signs and sold their shares at their peak, so to show a graph displaying a steady decline only to imply it'd be stupid to sell your shares is a bit ridiculous. One could take the opinion that it wouldn't be smart to own any of them at the moment because they should have already been sold at or near peak.
Of course if there was reason for their shares to increase in value that would be a different matter

Why do you care, it isn't yours.
I only care for progression, not who has more money. It is good to see Apple on the back foot to see if they still have it in them to progress and evolve their product range. They changed phones for the better, they changed tablets for the better, they failed at PC's, so we all hope they can do it again.

Only because people are stupid enough to pay nearly double what it's worth!
Every apple product is nearly twice the price of it's competitor, people are seeing the light and realising there is equal if not better for much less of the folded stuff.
That is why android are dominating the smartphone sales now.

The only reason android is dominating is because the market is flooded with them in all sectors. iOS is only in one device. What one device outsells apple's equivalent product...
As far as people being stupid to pay what they pay. Well that's just business 101. Supply and demand.

Tbh the galaxy tab2 we got the kids for Christmas I can't fault them and having apple gear at work, PCs aside, would be happy with either or.
The thing I like most about android products is the ability to use external hardware rather than be locked into one 'brand' so to speak, accessibility and ease of utilizing programs like Microsoft office and the like just seem better on androids. I still though wouldn't care whatever brand it was if it had the simplicity as iOS.

Enrol in an MBA, on the first day you'll learn why that strategy is so absurd.

GM was the number one car manufacturer for many years before going broke. Volume means nothing if you can't make a profit on it.

Flooding the market does not mean sales, you need to have the product to back it up, clearly there are more people converting from iOS to Android every day, hence the massive swing in sales in favour of the Google platform, and it's only going to get worse for Apple if they release money grabbing pathetic "updates" *cough* *cough* the way they do.
I have no issues with any Apple product never have, my issue is the exuberant prices charged and people are willing to pay. If however they were similarly priced it might be different IMO.
