And when i say all i mean all .
Happened yesterday at around 4 pm no net ,thought my adapter had gone legs up ,tried another one same deal would not pickup my router ,WTF tried another router and another modem ,none of them seemed to be transmitting no problems with son's laptop through the Ethernet ports all good ,gave up after 3 hours of removing and replacing things ..
Even my old netgear router would not transmit it's ssid just not there at all .
I checked everything through the interface wireless was on security was on i changed the ssid name the security password to a new one rebooted and nothing had changed no signal swapped cables modems anything i had to findout whats going on but no luck, gave up went to bed ..

Well today it just got stranger as the morning went on .
Seeing as i can hotspot all of the devices we have here i did just that i used 4 different devices and no luck nothing in the house would even show that they were active ,tried the wifes Iphone was the only thing that seemed to be alive in the house ,nothing would connect to that either my Daughters Galaxy note 2 10.1 was next ,well it showed up as a new network but this only showed up on 3 other devices in the house wifes Iphone my pc and sons laptop .
But even after in putting the code to connect it would not neither would anything else kept telling me incorrect password no matter what i did there was no way anything would work ,the network adapter on my wifes pc would not even enable same as mine ,i had a dlink usb adapter to try aswell that sort of worked every just would not work .

My sons laptop would display the hotspot but you couldn't connect to that either there was no way anything would work ,i thought my wireless network had taken out everything in the house ..

My HTC as a hotspot would not even show up ,same as my Galaxy Tab none of them ,and when they did no connection even when security was turned off and made as an open network the only device that found this was sons lappy nothing else ..
I have used these device before as hotspots and they work fine ..

So i went and got a 15 metre cat 5 cable from bunnings ran it from the Billion router to the netgear router to my PC plugged it all in and my wireless network showed up WTF checked wifes Pc sure enough there it is open network connected to it straight away as did everything else disabled wireless on my pc it is running cabled at the moment it connects to the wireless network now no problem at all HAD 2 APs cancels one turned wlan back on on the Billion and bugger me dead it works every device sees it and they are all connected right now ,it was like something had blocked all wi-fi in the house ..

I have had this network setup for around 7 years with no major probs at all except this ..
Everything is running now well most things i have to setup my WD Media centre the WII and my printer just strange ..

it was like something had blocked all wi-fi in the house ..

Sounds like someone in your neighbourhood had a microwave bomb going - tweaks to a microwave can create a blackout area through interference. I haven't seen one operational for years as 'N' series routers offer different frequencies of operation, but old school wifi was always susceptible.

Highly unlikely that is what it was, but a novel way to annoy your neighbours :)

I used to lose all wireless connectivity in my work apartment in PNG, eventually figured out it was the 2.4ghz AV sender one if the other guys had set up so he could watch TV in his room, switched it off, all good.

Any new gadgets in the house?

Nothing new here all the same stuff ,the only thing new here is a carton of TEDS in the fridge .
Just damn strange has been working fine for a bloody long time and the this ,oh well it's all working now..

Yep. Probably was just some interference from outside. If it happens again, consider running a scanner to check what channels nearby routers are on. My wifi used to drop out all the time and I found my new neighbours were using the same channel range as me. I changed my channels and no problems since

I am on channel 6 there is one nearby on 6 ,4 others on 11 the one near me is not a strong signal is about 2 blocks away looking at it by GPS.

So nobody nearby is using channel 1? Maybe a good opportunity to have 1-5 all to yourself

Went for a wander with my Tab to see who was around the nearest one on channel 1 would not be near enough to bother me ,i switched to 6 sometime back as i was having dropout probs originally i was on 1 might go back to it and see how we go ..
Thanks for the help..
Mind you i get better speed with my cable plugged in against wireless 10.90 M bits wireless 19.90 M bits Ethernet will play around for the nest few days and see what happens..

There's some cool freeware apps (for PC and mac) you can run to see what networks are around, and specifically what channel they are using.

I used to once as the in-laws were having massive network dramas with wifi and we found that everyone in the neighbourhood had the same routers running on the same channels, so we switched channels and its been gravy since :)

Net isn't anywhere near that fast anyway. So it's not a huge deal. Plus it only connects to the switch via 100Mbit. Why apple did that on the airport express I have no idea (extreme runs gigabit). So really the only time ill use the full 300 is if it was a perfect world (it isn't and sync speed is usually about 150Mbps) and it was wifi to wifi transfer.

I only have my portable devices on wifi anyway. Everything else is on gigabit ethernet throughout the house including my macbook which docks to a thinderbolt display on ethernet. Still cop the Internet bottleneck to the outside world. But moving media around the house via my NAS is bangin fast.

Wait until you get WiFi ac to replace N. Like going from B to N.

Ill be getting an ac AirPort Extreme when that happens. Will be good on the nbn one day when I can get that too (hopefully this year). Either way though I reckon they'll never hit 1Gbps. Realistically more like 500mbps

Wireless will never be as reliable as wired.

No it will never be as fast. But reliable is debatable.

Wireless will never be as reliable as wired.

AC is designed to increase reliability and offer a massive speed boost for wifi ... it is a convenience technology, and not a performance technology though, so hard cabling will always win.

Sounds like massive em interference to me. You should've noticed other 2.4ghz devices struggling as well (cordless phones, bluetooth, wireless headphones, wireless keyboards/mice).
Somebody close by could've got their hands on an unshielded microwave(intentionally or accidentally). Turn that on and it effectively blasts out all over the 2.4-2.5 range and kills everything in the process. Had a similar/funny occurrence at a client site where every day at 10am the office wireless would crap itself and everyone disconnected from RDP sessions but people cabled in were fine. Turns out someone went and microwaved their soup every 10am like clockwork and the microwave was quite old.

Don't have any other wireless devices no mice no Keyboards no Bluetooth still use all the old stuff i have that works ,the keyboard on my wifes computer is 9 years old ,it's one of those ones you have to plug in .:)

Has anyone got 11ac?

Certainly do, it is so damn quick, it would want to be as well with the price I paid for the modem and the adapter. Takes one giant, massive dump on my old N router.
FYI, I have the NetGear R6300 Dual-Band, highly recommend it.

Definitely sounds like interference from somewhere. Get an app for your iOS/Android device. One for Android is called Wifi Analyzer (Spelt in American). It's free and it lists detected Wifi Networks, signal strengths, and wireless channels.
If this happens again, get your Tab and go for a walk, and see what your Tab picks up.

I do alot of HD video, and lossless audio streaming throughout the house and had it maxed at just over 1600 mbps, and my internet speed went from 1.5 mbps to 9.7 mbps. Thats all wireless too.

Find that hard to believe. That's 1.6Gbps. The router is only meant to be around 1.3. That would be perfect world too where you would be close enough to go ethernet lol.

Internet speed should not change that much as you haven't opened up the bottleneck

steve_t
05-02-2013, 07:26 PM
That must be 160 Mb/s, yeah?

Just reading a recent Tom's Hardware review of routers and they benchmarked to over 600Mb/s in UDP mode but only a max of 180 in TCP

Yeah no where near the theoretical top speed of over 1Gbps. Ill stick to Ethernet.

I suspect he is talking sync speed - and it is not uncommon.

My belkin synced at 2400 - My FritzBox syncs at 11400 ... same line, same position.

...strange coincidence but I lost all our wifi tonite (Netgear ADSL modem/router)
at the same time as the wireless keyboard/mouse set on my desktop stopped working (Microsloth wireless set btw)

could not get the keyboard or mouse to work and the lights kept flickering on the USB receiver and flickering off.
In the end, off to Office works and bought another MS wireless keyboard and mouse.

Bingo..all devices (notebooks and phones) now have wireless connection and the new keyboard and mouse work
(obviously as I am typing this!)

coincidence maybe...?

So your old KB and mouse were interfering with EVERYTHING? Whoa!

Could it have been that in the time it took for you to go get the new MKB set, an outside interference source stopped? Or did you still have problems right up to the point of changing over?

Well everything is working here everything that should be on my network is there for a change and has been like this since sunday night ,no network dropouts or anything at all so fingers crossed ,But i may run some extra cables around the house for a backup incase things stop again ,can't cable the house as we rent but i can run cables where ever i want walls ceilings behind this over that ..

You kinda could cable your house, you would just have to patch and paint the old wall points when you leave lol. Do you have any coax points throughout the house? You could just those plates.

No points in the house never really thought about it as WI-FI worked well seeing as i could move things from room to room without a problem ,seeing as i have 18 devices on WI-FI it will stay for awhile until i figure out the best way to cable things ....

Well tonight it has happened again no wireless network adapters will not even enable same problem as last time all phones off the network ,i put the settings in and my network won't even show up ,my pc has the cable plugged in so i am ok..

WTF twice now can't get my media centre on there either, there is no wireless can't hotspot again either..

Well will wait and see in the morning off now for the night ..

If you have an iPad or a tablet, or even your Apple or Android phone would do the trick.
I am sure Apple has this app too, but on the Android App store there is an app called WiFi Analyser.
It is great for detecting wireless networks, and letting you know for yours what the best channel is to use.
Next time this happens, run the app, and see what it picks up.
Or for your laptop a program like Vistumbler will pick up wireless networks that even have their broadcasting of SSIDs turned off.
It just could be someone in your neighbourhood doing something weird.
This time did you turn off your wireless keyboard, and mouse?

Or they just reconnect themselves as they would normally?

Takes a little while one by one they come back i have a few things here ..
You know 4 PCs, Media centre ,4 phones , printer ,Ipad 2 Samsung Tabs 1 other phone my son uses for music ,my old HTC used like an ipod he likes it ..
The last one to come back on was my wifes phone but the Ip was incorrect 10.0.0.3 not my network address im in the 192 bla bla bla range everything is working fine now ..

When this happens again, can you check the IP address of your devices again? Interesting your wife's phone was a different IP.
Also do you know anyone in your neighbourhood, and the people living next to you? Do they experience the same issues?
Can you remote unlock your cars at the time of the issue?

Didnt think of the cars ,but they worked fine last time this happened .
What is really strange is the way things are now working ,things i couldn't access and things i sort of could ,printer media centre just little things all on the network and accessible with no problems at all ,i am running my pc by cable wireless is off and things are working without a hitch ..

Me again it's happened again this morning ,but i think i have sort of figured out what the problem is ..
It is interference from what i don't know the Billion is down the back of the house in the family room ,i managed to get my netgear router setup as an AP right next to my pc and no real probs a few drop outs but not to bad .
But speed wise the Billion was only able to supply the best speed of 24 kb per sec .wow look dialup .
Back nest to my pc with the netgear 21 Mega bits ,and tonight lost the netgear and the billion came back so did my network and security cam ..
It is nearly every 3 weeks and a saturday strange but i am stilkl working on it ,oh and the cars lock unlock ok aswell.
