View Full Version : Casual dyno use in Melbourne - once off

Guys,

Not sure in which forum to ask, and given it's over 12 months since I sold my WH to buy a blue oval I better don 2 flame suits :)

Long story short I have a Ford Ranger with the 3.0 TDCi and I recently bought a cheap (probably nasty) go fast plug in box that I assume plays with delivery of the diesel to both boost performance when required and save fuel when cruising. Running it at the mid point setting currently because any higher step triggers the check engine light and throws a fault code of voltage problem on the fuel pressure regulator - but I have no idea if it's actually doing anything.

I wondered if there was any chance I could (for a small fee or beer) chuck it on a dyno somewhere in Melbourne to do a quick baseline followed by performance gain test with the unit actually attached. Given I only paid 80 bux for the "chip" 2nd hand I'm not looking to spend a day mucking about and I imagine it could be all done in less than an hour?

Anybody here a sponsor who can help me out or know of someone I could call to see if anyone will let me pollute their dyno with a sh**box blue oval commercial on the cheap???

Thanks.

Probably cost you $100 to throw it on the dyno for 3 runs? Is it really worth it?

Most places will do 3 runs for $50 or there abouts best option is to get on the blower.

Thanks guys that gives me an idea of cost at least. TBH even for $100 I'd be tempted just out of curiosity but obviously the cheaper the better because my suspicion is that the device is probably not doing much at all. However all the reading I've done does suggest that boosting the performance (mildly) of a TD is a lot "easier" than a petrol engine because it's really just a case of pumping more fuel in - yes I know it's much more than that overall but in a nutshell :)

The only thing close to a westside performance shop I know is Nick at NCX(?) who loaned me an airbox ages ago to get a RWC. Does anyone know his details as I've lost the PMs since then and can't find him in the sponsors list?

Thanks again.

Edit: Found Nick's details - NJC Performance! Will contact him and see what the deal is.

Another way around this is to wait for a dyno day, about the cheapest pulls you'll get.

Hehe not a bad suggestion and would certainly provide some amusement if I turn up to one to pull double figure KW at the rears while everyone else is 200+ :)

There's usually one at every dyno day ;)

which would you prefer, $100 or an engine? lol. obviously diesels can take a little more punishment however I'd throw it on at least that way you know it's safe. and not doing anything seriously bad.

Meh it's only a Ford ;-) And it's under warranty - plus I have Dashcommand and an OBDII unit so I can always clear any fault codes before I tow it there for an engine replacement LOL.

Just a tip, be careful with the cheap TD chips, most of the real cheap one just up fuel rail pressure to the point of damaging injector pumps, and the also up the exhaust temps a shitload. If you really wanna save diesel and safely up hp I would look into brands including "chipit" or unichip, both are expensive but safely follow sensor outputs and alter timing, and injector timing. I had a d40 navara previously and went down these roads, I would recommend researching the net.
