Gday guys,
Been looking at the old posts and done a few different type of searches and remembering some of you guys buying a GPS unit that records speed and records driving?
Can anyone help what ones you use?
By memory there was a guy on current affair that challenged it some time ago....
Appreciate your input

Can I add "resolution capable of clearly reading the number plate of the car in front" to your list of requirements?
Thanks ... And watching thread with interest :)

I have one of HSV Listy's units and love it! Am at wedding at moment but someone started a thread about GPS units about a year ago which has more info. If nobody has linked to it by time I get home I'll do so.
Basically around $250 (discount for LS1 members possibly applies if you mention it) 1920 x 1280 HD video, inbuilt GPS tracking with full Google maps display when played back while connected to internet. About 8 hours recording on 32 gig micro SD card.

Couple of videos for the differance in the GPS cameras for those interested
Street and race combined type, all in one, simple suction cup mount and sits on the front windscreen (adaptable to roll cage mount too)
l0LF6-aOJHw
More race set up for car, bikes, speedway etc with ultra fast GPS speed display, 10th of a second timing and more sports camera, waterproof etc. Yes my clutch dies at the end. Pretty obvious it was on its way out looking back on the video. (same video as I posted in GTS circuit thread before)
XSedHze7odg
There is hundreds of videos on the above youtube site from all over the place and stacks of sports.

Depending on the price difference, if I had my time again I'd probably go for the bottom one (race set up) because the one thing I've noticed on mine is the GPS speed display gets left behind under rapid acceleration/deceleration. It's fine for normal driving but slow for accurate speed measurements under acceleration.
As a demo of what you get with my camera, including Google maps display, please see video clip below.
Please note: The only reason for all the jerkiness is my ancient pc is not powerful enough to run Snagit video capture software which I had to use to capture the full display as well as play back the file being captured so the CPU was running at 100%!
Just playing the file back is fine, it was only using Snagit to capture as well which killed it. I also had to only do the capture in a smallish window in order for it not to die totally so full screen playback is a bit blurry. Normally full screen playback is crisp with 1920x1280 res.

Ive Considered one of these cameras however i dont like how bulky they are when installed id prefer a less noticeable camera. obviously that's not going to happen as the ones ive seen for sale seem not that small i could be wrong tho.

I run a BlackVue HD, its small cylinder that sits up behind my rear view mirror and has the ability to be hard wired which in turn gives you a parking mode which has a shock sensor and a movement sensor so while you are parked shopping it captures images of anyone walking past the car and records instantly if the shock sensor picks up a bump (all levels of sensors are adjustable). I have the one camera and just have the mounts in different cars so I just have to swap it out when I drive a different car. Takes an SD card and all the software to overlay the GPS functions or just play the file for a video image, it has come in handy so many times don't drive anywhere without it.
http://www.incarcamerasystems.co.uk/images/van/blackvue.jpg
Got mine from an Australian Ebay seller, Korean versions are a little cheaper but there can be issues with the English translation software.
Will the mentioned cameras do 0-??? and 400m times or is that a different beast ??

My camera sits up in front of the mirror and I'm sure 99.9% of people would never notice it unless they were specifically looking for it, in which case nothing on the market for a reasonable price would suffice. I'll try to get a pic for you tomorrow. The black dotted section across the top of the inside of the VE windscreen causes issues for suction cup mounts so I'm going to put a piece of clear contact over the section the suction mount sits on to make it more secure (when the car has been parked in the hot sun for a while occasionally I'll get back and the camera has come unstuck).
I had my auto elec hard wire the camera from under the dash and run the lead up under the plastic trim by the windscreen then across above the headlining so the only visible bit of wire is a couple of inches from the headlining down in front of the mirror. Unlike PSI 364's BlackVue it doesn't have a parking mode. PSI, is the BlackVue battery operated or do you also have to swap leads?

Hey Wonky, mine is hard wired in the VE but the BlackVue comes with the cigarette lighter plug to power it up in the kit, no battery option. I bought the separate power unit to hardwire in my VE ute and i use the ciggy plug supplied for my VZ as i dont park it anywhere only go for short drives it it. The mount for the camera is 3M clear sticky tab so the mount is permanent sort of and I bought a spare mount off Ebay to put it in the other car.
In saying that though Listys stuff is definitely good gear I run his GPS trackers in my cars and couldn't be happier, only reason I went with the BlackVue is it is compact and out of the way and the parking mode sold it for me as well, huge problem with car break ins in town here along with the shopping trolley brigade.

Power supply and Video Out jacks and the Micro SD slot on the side of the camera

The camera and mount separate
http://www.uwdashcam.be/img/cms/blackvue-mounted-in-car.jpg
Similar to how i have it in my car you can see the power lead and the kit comes with little clips for the cable on your windscreen to keep it up out of the way
Either way you cant go wrong like I said i am a big fan of Listys gear its very good but this suited what I wanted especially the size and parking mode.

Ah, OK. Thanks. :) I can see how the parking mode could be handy though one of the few advantages of being disabled is I typically get to park very close to things in well lit, wide spaces so the chances of problems are less plus my alarm gives warning beeps if anyone bumps the car and goes off and sends me an SMS with a big bump.
bush_basha
09-04-2013, 05:33 PM
that parking mode sounds like a great idea, have you tested it out with how far away the people have to be, like if they walk the entire side of the car will it pick them up or do they have to be seen in the front.
it also starts recording with movement aswell as the bump yeh?
PSI 364
09-04-2013, 06:03 PM
Good point Wonky and the alarm with SMS is pretty good idea, plus if i ever caught anyone damaging a disabled persons car, elbows to the skull would be in order but would not be surprised to see it happen here in the Isa, we have scumbags on a whole different level up here.
Basha, The movement sensor picks up anyone in front of the camera only, within 140 degrees or something like that according to the manual, but it does help tell you who has been hanging around the car, the shock sensor can be adjusted so a slight bump will start recording or change it to a good hit. The movement is recorded as normal but a bump is an "event" recording and is flagged as red in the software and cant be overwritten if the SD car ever runs out of space.
I have read somewhere the new BlackVue has Wifi and you can view recordings through your smartphone ?? Stuffs me how that works but they seem to be getting better all the time, hope this info has helped someone.

yeh just looked up the blackvue and the newer model has wifi pretty cool if you ask me, however I wonder how much power it'd use from your car battery

Dash cams.
Im after any and all info on them. Who has one, and what kind? Im looking into getting one and know nothing about them. What sort of coin do you have to spend on a quality unit? Are they all turned on and off manually every time you drive? Or can they be wired in to turn on when the car starts etc?

I've got a BlackVue DR500-GW HD for around $360. See http://www.autoblackbox.com.au/blackvue-dash-cams/blackvue-dr500gw-hd
It starts up automatically with the ignition. I got the extra module that lets you select if you want it to record while parked or not. It also has a battery voltage detector to prevent parked recording flattening the battery (shuts down recording).
It makes files of 45-75M per minute, so you have to remove them to a computer if you want to keep them. The software works on mac, iphone, windows, and I guess Android...
I've had mine for a year, and, touch wood, I've only seen one dic*head go through a red light. And, oh, it recorded my stupid dealer pushing the clutch in and holding my old W427 on the rev-limiter when he took it for a trade-in test drive. C*nt.

This site sells heaps of them
www.racerecall.com.au
I have the Navman 358 (rebadged Mio 358) which I got from The Good Guys, I wanted to buy locally so if there were any problems it would be easier to return. The first one had a faulty speaker and second one had a faulty charger, third one has been working fine for the last 6 months and delivers good day & night video quality.
http://dashcamtalk.com/ has a lot of info and the general consensus if you want a cheap dashcam with good PQ is to get the G1W-C, as it has a capacitor instead of battery which is better in hot climates such as Oz.
G1W-C can be bought here http://www.foxoffer.com/g1wc-full-hd-1080p-vehicle-blackbox-dvr-no-battery-p-653.html#.U50e3PmSzO4
I think this may be a rebadged G1W (battery version) which is sold locally but not sure. http://www.harveynorman.com.au/cameras-phones-gps/cameras/crash-cameras/navig8r-car-crash-camera-1080p.html

I bought one from HSV Listy probably close to 3 years ago and it's still working very well. Unfortunately he doesn't seem to be selling anything now and I don't think he has done for many months so when heavychevy wanted one and I wanted one as a backup in case mine ever carks it (it's like wearing seatbelts, now I've had it so long to protect against my people trying to unjustly blame my disabilities for causing an accident I'd feel wrong/naked without one) I got the identical looking ones from http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=261152641781&ssPageName=ADME:L:OC:AU:3160. GS!000 $80 delivered. :) I haven't tried mine yet but Phil has put his in and is very happy with it.
It automatically comes on and goes off with ignition and has various parameters you can set for delay coming on and going off after starting/stopping, it has various resolutions but I always use 1920 x 1280 HD and even after upload and conversion on Vimeo they still come out as quite good resolution - see https://vimeo.com/user28647606/videos
I've had mine wired in behind the dash for power and the lead runs from there up under the plastic at my side of the windscreen, across the top of the headlining and down by the mirror so the lead is almost invisible. In fact someone would have to either be eagle eyed or looking for a camera to even notice the camera I reckon because at first glance people would assume it's just the mirror. I use 32gig micro SD cards (2 in rotation) and they capture about 8 hrs of driving. Best to use class 10 cards, class 6 as a minimum - anything else is too slow. I get mine from a guy on eBay for about $21 delivered (Toshiba).
It's has built in GPS to display your speed and if you play it back on pc for example using the inbuilt player.exe which is automatically written to the micro SD every time you use the camera to format it displays your travel on Google maps! :goodjob:

I'll try to remember to get some next time I go out but basically I've got mine mounted just to the left of my mirror with the suction cup about 1/3 on the black spotty stuff across the top of the screen and 2/3 off. Any higher and the holes in the blacks spotty stuff don't allow it to stick very well. Scared the crap out of me the first time it fell down whilst I was driving! Fortunately the way I have it wired up it didn't fall far but if you were running from the cigarette lighter it could crash onto the console. :(

The last pic (with my fugly head edited out) is the best one I had to show how it tends to blend in with the mirror so most people wouldn't even notice it. It's not as unobtrusive as PSI 364's above but for $80 delivered and with excellent HD picture quality plus GPS and Google maps facilities I ain't complaining. :)

Unfortunately I have to post an update on the cameras I got for heavychevy and myself. Unlike my original identical looking one from HSV Listy which is still going strong after well over 3 years, heavychevy's has had occasional intermittent problems which come and go and he recently blew the fuse on his cigarette lighter which is possibly related given that's all it gets used for. I know these cameras inside and out having used one for over three years and from the outset when I eventually tried mine it was faulty. It soon reached the point where it wouldn't even turn on even after being on charge all night so I never got to actually use it in my car. :(
I emailed the seller who seemed all very pleasant and said send it back (at my cost of course). I wanted to make sure it couldn't get mixed up with any other returns, not knowing how many they’d have, so stuck a piece of packing tape in half width wise across the top with the eBay item number written on it, then wrapped it in layers and layers of bubblewrap to protect it. When it did eventually arrive I received an email complaining about how dirty the tape had made it and saying they’d send it off for repair!!
"hi friend
i mail to tell you that your back package got here today
but i can not understand why you sticked all the camera ,that is too dirty
and we will back it to the factory for the repair ,when it is ok i will help you send it out
thanks "
I mean, who bothers trying to repair such cheap, mass produced electronic goods these days??? I expected that once they’d received mine back and verified it was faulty they’d just send me a new one!! I can't understand how they could complain it was dirty from what I’d done so wonder whether someone had opened it and re-stuck it all? My one piece of tape was about 8 - 10mm wide and less than the width of the camera. Even if it had left some residue it would have easily cleaned off with a tiny bit of solvent.
After 6 more weeks had gone by with no word I again contacted him. More complaints about it being dirty (which I’m sure wasn’t my doing) and saying they were still waiting for it to come back from repair. A few more emails to and fro along the same lines which made me increasingly frustrated (possibly their aim???) so in the end I said forget it, I’ll just put my outlay down to bad experience. If they were at all worried about customer satisfaction I’d have expected a further response but that was the last I heard………………..
Therefore I certainly wouldn't recommend buying from them. :(

I have the Blackvue DR500GW-HD and love it, you can vary the range in parking mode as to movement activation, also the sensitivity for an event(bump/impact). It connects to your phone via Wi-Fi, you can download files or view live. I have the power module so you can set low voltage, 11.8 or 12V to shut down to save battery or on a timer which is variable. I purchase mine from www.motorblackbox.com.au with the 32Gig SD card. I just checked site and it seems a new model. Had no issues so far picture is great. Has GPS location, speed and time. On playback it gives a map display and also can see trip details on map. Interesting when I had the senator serviced last they test drove and was very subdued in their driving, it also has voice commands telling you when it powers up or shuts down etc. so they know it has a camera if they don't see it. I paid about $363 about 3 months ago.

Well, turned out I was wrong in thinking the guy I'd bought my and heavychevy's cameras from had taken me at my word and just forgotten about me.
A new camera arrived the other day while we were away so I'll try it later today when I have my car back but from the quick play I had today while there was still a bit of charge in the camera it looks good! Also I believe it's actually a higher spec model! :goodjob:
Hi all.
After an incident yesterday between me, a kangaroo and a B-Double I am now very interested in purchasing a dash cam. I hope I never have an opportunity to get footage of something like yesterday again, but I do a few kms so it is something I've been thinking about for a while now.
Can I please get people's opinions on the good and bad. Basically I would be looking for HD, wide angle, auto initiation, shock sensors, good night vision and a quick save function.
Has anyone tried the cheap eBay units?
Thanks in advance for any input.

Hey Hos,
I had to check the date of Wonky's post as I was unsure how long I've had my cam in the car ( near 12 months ) The lighter fuse blew a couple of months after install, but appears to be unrelated as it's not occured again.
I didn't mind spending more, but was skeptical anything sensitive like a video cam would survive a summer, even in Melbourne. It's been fine and the quality is very good. It has all the options you're referring to.
It's not badly affected by incidental sun glare, hasn't fallen off the windscreen, the software included ( g force, accel, location etc ) is good. It's a little delicate though and I had a problem with the screen going fuzzy when I was playing with the settings in the first few months. May have been pressing the buttons too hard as it's been fine since.
Some friends at work were interested in mine, one bought a model many times the price but essentially it's no better IMHO.
Buy cheap and you might get a lemon, Wonk's was a dud, but mine was o.k. Paypal for the win.
If or when this fails, I'll be getting another. The reason I fitted one was; I nearly hit a pedestrian while turning left at a green arrow, while the traffic in the lane on my right was stationary at a red light. Pedestrian ran across the intersection possibly thinking all lanes were facing a red light. It could have been a tragedy and I could have been convicted as I didn't have a witness in the car.

Well, after probably close to 5 years of excellent service my original dashcam from HSV Listy finally started playing up, recording some files OK but others corrupted, then eventually wouldn't turn on. From memory I paid about $180 delivered all those years ago and as is the case with most electronic equipment these days it slowly gets cheaper. I couldn't afford a Blackvue and in fact some of the reviews I read on them weren't as glowing as I'd want for such an expensive item. After reading the links Phil put above I decided to go for a Mini 0805 with GPS (you can get without GPS and save $10 - $20 but why would you?). I got mine from an Australian seller on eBay which cost me a bit more than getting one from China but I am so glad I did because delivery was quick and he was extremely helpful when I realised I'd bought one without GPS!
There are a few great things about these dashcams IMO, the crucial one being size!! I hate huge dashcams with 2.7" screens! I want mine to be as close to invisible as possible, like the Blackvues, so they don't stick out like dogs' balls. The second crucial factor is video resolution. If it can only record in low res then it's a waste of time having a dashcam!! Not only can the Mini 0805 record in HD mode (1920 x 1280) it can go up to 2304x1296!! Most importantly it uses an Ambarella processor, same as Go Pro cameras so great quality video is assured. That's one of the things Phil and I discovered with the cameras we bought (see earlier posts), me as a spare and he as his primary dashcam. My original dashcam from HSV Listy was a GS1000 and it was great. However, then places started making clones which weren't anywhere near as good and unless you read up it was almost impossible to tell if you were buying one like my original or a clone. We got clones - reasonable but definitely not as good.
Back to my comment on buying locally. The only difference between the GPS and non GPS Mini 0805 cameras is in the tiny separate base unit which sticks to the windscreen so in order to change the non GPS dashcam I originally ordered to a GPS one I just had to pay $15 to have a new GPS base sent down and it arrived in days. If I'd tried to save myself a few bucks by ordering from China I'd still be waiting a week or two for it to arrive and god knows how I'd go getting the GPS version after I realised I'd mistakenly ordered a non GPS one! :nutkick:
For the previous dashcam I'd already had a hidden cigarette lighter plug added under the lower dash by my auto elec and the lead to the camera run up under the windscreen trims and across under the rooflining so all the wiring is hidden. The wire from the cigarette lighter plug goes into the dashcam base and the camera itself can easily be unclipped from the base if required. I've only taken one sequence of videos so far but am very happy with the quality (1920 x 1280 mode). It can also take both 64 and 128gig micro SD cards so now I have a 64gig card I'll try the higher resolution. My original GS1000 had a 120 degree field of vision whereas this one has 140 degrees, which has benefits but also leads to a slightly more fisheye effect when viewing video.

Dashcam hidden by mirror. :)
The only potential negative is on reliability but I suspect people only complain when they occasionally fail and don't otherwise say anything, so for $140 - $150 with all its features I'm happy to give it a go.

Almost invisible unless somebody looks hard for it yet can do 2304 x 1296 resolution, which was what that was shot at originally. However, my video editing software can only do 1920 x 1080 so it went through one conversion there and one conversion again in uploading to Vimeo. Actually, have now realised it can do even higher resolution so I'm now running in the highest resolution (2560*1080 30P 21:9) so I'll see how that goes. I'm hoping being 21:9 it will reduce the slight fisheye effect to negligible.
From the manual: Video resolution: 2560*1080 30P 21:9 / 2304*1296 30P 16:9 / 1920*1080 45P 16:9 1920*1080 30P 16:9 HDR 1920*1080 30P 16:9 / 1280*720 60P 16:9 / 1280*720 30P 16:9
It can also be played using the inbuilt player which instead of just video displays your position etc on Google maps, as below.

Just bumping this thread again. I gave up my search last time i posted in this thread because i couldnt find what i really wanted. I would happily pull the trigger on the Blackvue DR650S-2CH, but they have hardcoded speed and GPS which i do NOT want. Can anyone recommend an equal quality/featured camera/s just where GPS is option, or non-existent? I feel like the best option is to run two of the Blackvue DR450-1CH's, but surely theres a better way.

Don't know whether it suits your needs but the Mini 0805 comes with or without GPS ($10 saving too).

I've got the 0805 and the quality it really good. It has it's own player that shows on maps. GPS time stamped and speed which is configurable so you can have it on or off.
The GPS files will still be recorded so it will still show up on the player if you want.
There have been two problems with it so far, not sure what others have seen with this model.
1. It interferes with the FM radio creating noise which is very annoying. Doesn't happen on AM. I'm looking at hardwiring it to see if that fixes the problem as it happens if I plug in the cigarette lighter power even if it's not plugged into the camera so it's not the camera at fault.
2. I was using a Sandisk 32Gb card which had problems with files being overwritten so it would randomly not record anything. I've updated this to another brand 64Gb card to see if it helps.
There are lots of info on sites about the best way to configure it. For $119 it was a good buy as long as I can sort out these 2 issues.

My 0805 is hardwired and doesn't create any problems on FM. AM is flaky anyway as we're outer outer metro and with the stubby aerial I've got it's hopeless, so have ordered a new slightly longer one. I've been running 64gig cards in mine for ages and have been running a 128gig for a month or two now with no problems. :) Saves swapping so often. (All Samsung.)

Thanks for the replies guys. I just got an email back from Blackvue about the camera i was after, and it turns out the speed overlay is optional/removable so im probably going to just stick with that one as it appeals the most. Thanks for taking the time to reply though.
