hey guys. has anyone ever changed the sensor in the dash for the aircon in a vz calais?? rachs one has shat itself, and we have been quoted ~$1100 for a $20 sensor to be replaced. apparently the dash has to come out, and then the aircon regassed after it is changed. does anyone know of a guide to doing this?

i can get the aircon gas sucked out at work, then get it regassed at work as well. just need a bit of a guide, or some info on how to go about the rest.

Which sensor. Cabin temp, light etc?

uhhhhh, cabin temp i think. ill ask rachel tonight. the sensor tells the computer, that the car is always 17d/c or something. so the compressor wont kick in.

Both really easily fixed ;)

LMAO @ $1100 if it's either of those!

if your work can do the AC why can't they do the sensor?
I highly doubt you'll need to mess around with the gas though just for a sensor

they said the part is $20 or so. its the labour for pulling the dash out etc.. sounded steep to me too. we are going to pick the car up in a minute, so ill give an exact answer to what it is tonight..

work has the gas vacuum, and the gas to regas, but the fitters at work , prolly dont wanna work on my dash after hours, its hard enough to get the buggers to work on the drills in work hours :)

if it is the cabin temp sensor im pretty sure it is one of these.

and is located behind the holes in the dash surround.

its the thermistor in the dash. apparently its reading at -7degrees. so compressor wont kick in.

the guy says its in the top of the dash, so the whole dash has to come out.

I know am taking this slightly off topic, but have noticed in my Z if I for instance drive the car off from cold the climate control even when off appears to temper the air!
Not excessively though it appears to warm the air leaving the dash vents!! Is this normal or is there some setting Ive overlooked perhaps?

What is your climate temp set at before you turned it off? I know my VQ's climate will heat or cool the air thats coming from the vents outside depending on what its set at even whilst off.

welll, if thats all it is, i reckon i can do that. prolly have to do it twice, cos that seems to be my modus operandi when im tackling something new on the cars :)...

ok thats different to the cabin temp sensor then, so yes the dash will have to be pulled apart.

Reckon your on the money cause I always run my climate around 24-25 degrees!

Does anyone have a link to the part that we need?

ok, turns out this was the part, one of the bits someone listed on the other page, http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Commodore-VZ-AC-air-con-climate-control-temperature-sensor-replacement-4blok-/221183924457

except i got it from the local ac guys for $22...for a brand new part. 4blok are bit of a rip.

just gotta put the rest back together in the morning. it was in the centre, at the front near the top vents, so dash pad had to come out, console, radio, and steering wheel. wasnt as bad as i thought, but still wasnt fun..

thanks for the tips and info guys..

put the frikkin car back together, and something mustnt be right, cos no air con, still....and if you press the os temp button on the dash, it says outside temp is -40 degrees c., used to say the right temperature and the dash blows hotter air then ever, like the heater is on. if anyone has any ideas as to what i have done, please let me know.

Hazard a guess for a thermistor to read a value like that it must be either short or open circuit!

Is there an X on the climate control display?

BTS666.0
30-09-2013, 08:22 PM
no, but it has appeared on the display a couple of times in the last few months, then disappears.

It will be there if the Ambient sensor is unplugged, just following on from Mick's post.

Silly question but does it have Gas in it?

yeah, still has gas, as it would work every now and then. and its working again now, after the little spaz it had the other day, it has worked fine for the last 2 days. ambient temps are back to normal and ac is nice and cold. thanks for the help guys.
