View Full Version : opinions on this noise?
G'day all,
My L98 has started making a wierd noise when hot, and only audible at idle, so today I've taken the belt off after a drive and the noise didn't reoccur, replaced the belt and it was back.
Video of it here:

Now when replacing the belt I noticed the tensioner (not the pulley the tensioner itself) makes a noise when moved which may be similar, hard to tell but I will post a video below:

Any opinions would be great, hoping somebody has heard this noise before because I havent. Had a water pump bearing go on my old LS1 but it sounded nothing like this, was a normal grinding bearing noise.
Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a squeak to me :p
I can't it'd be anything to worry about. Just give it a spray with CRC or similar, give it a jiggle and see if it goes away
Yeah I might give that a go, don't want to ruin the belt though. I've long suspected the used car dealer had too short a belt on it, it's a 6pk1940 repco, but I only get 3-4mm of movement in the tensioner to take the belt off (before it's hard against the stop), which might explain the extra load on the tensioner and maybe the cause of the noise (if it is the tensioner). Might be able to see what I'm talking about in the first video.
Is that sort of noise normal when moving a tensioner? Or is it a good sign that it needs replacing. Damn hard to tell if it's the same noise at idle, obviously I can't match the load on the tensioner by hand to get a similar sound. God damn bloody noises! Not too stressed about it now that I know it's an accessory doing it but still embarassing and annoying.

Water pump sounds like that when starting to go, sons car sounded exactly like that. pump pulley also had play in it, bearing going.
We even thought it was that top bearing tensioner and replaced it but it wasn't that.
But check the pump bearing play etc with the belt off preferably, rocking on the pulley it should have no play at all. any bearing can make that noise, sounding near the top though probably the pump.
just fitted a new pump today noise all gone runs smoother and seems a little cooler, probably loosing pressure through the seal and bearing and running a little hotter before

3-4mm is normal on the belt, easiest way to get belt on/off is doing the water pump first off, last when going on

mine had this exact sound its the pulley bearing running dry on the tensioner... i packed mine with grease and it went away
Try it first and let us know
Also take the belt off for a sec start it and if noise is gone then it narrows the problem down
Err nevermind i just noticed the second video

It does sound like a dry bearing in the first video, the noise in the second video does sound similar though...
I'd try as already mentioned, give the hinged part of the tensioner a spray with silicone or WD40 and see what happens.

definatelly a bearing on its way out,
great thanks fellas, will try spraying the tensioner tomorrow and see how it goes. fingers crossed, easier to do than the water pump.

hows this going?
It's on hold at the moment, going on holidays next week so don't have the spare $. Will update this thread when there's been progress. First step will probably be tensioner though.
