Hi everyone
Just purchased a Panasonic DMR-BWT835GL Blu ray disk recorder. Just after some tips and tricks regarding setup and recording TV programs with it. Or general opinion about them. Or anyone here that has one.

I have an earlier model Panasonic Blu-ray player/recorder. It's very easy to use for recording TV, just use the green "guide" button to show all the TV programs. Then use the circular button to scroll to which program you want to record, press "ok". It then takes you to a screen showing the start and finish times. Generally I find the programs run overtime, so I just add 10-15mins to the finish time and press "ok" again. A red clock will appear against the program you want to record as an indicator. Even if the program has already started it will give you the option of recording the same way. That saves having to press stop at the end if you just hit the record button. It will also allow you to record regular weekly programs, but I've never used that feature. If you have too many programs stored on the hard drive it will warn you that you don't have enough space left. Then you just have to delete some programs.
To play back use the "navigator" button, select the program you want to watch and press "ok". This you can do even if it's still recording the same program. You can fast forward through the ads until it catches up with the live TV, pause it, rewind it, whatever you want to do. If you want to keep the recording permanently, then just burn it to a disc. Incidentally the Blu-ray recorder is really only for things you have recorded on a full HD camcorder, it's no real benefit for TV programs.
Setup is automatic. It will take you through the setup process when you connect it to the TV. You can change the quality of the picture it records. The higher the quality the more HDD space it uses, less recording time. Your hard drive is quite big, so shouldn't have too much of a problem recording on the higher quality, depending on how many TV programs you record.
Talk about a late reply!!!
@mac06
How do you change the quality if the recording to maximize capacity? I can do it on my parents older model unit, but on my 18month old one can not find an option to change recording quality.

Sorry for the late reply, I've been pretty busy with other things. Not sure about newer models, but my remote has a "rec mode" button. Press that and it allows you to choose the quality of your recording, from DR, HG, HX, etc........ to SP, LP, and EP. Obviously the better the quality the less time you have on the hard drive to record. The following picture will show the button I'm talking about.

Thanks for that. Will try it next time I am home.

I have one of each, not Blu-ray recorders though. The older one seems to be able to record in different formats straight away. The newer one can only record in DR but can then convert to another format in standby.
When you press to record a program from the TV guide, it asks Start, Stop, mode(DR), CONV, subtitles. If you press on CONV it will convert the program into the other formats in standby and delete the DR copy of the program if you want.
