Hi guys
Anyone taken delivery of their VF SS ute and checked out the exhaust ? Has it changed from VE or the same setup ? Should be getting my SSv redline next week and want to get onto the Exhaust ASAP .. if its the same i can get an off the shelf VE 3" cat back fitted quickly.
Cheers

Heard of a few systems fitted without any comments of problems. I think the VE systems will be the same....

Im not chasing big gains or max performance ... its a work car so im after a better sound and a better breathing for the car... maybe an xforce 3" varex catback . I have an xforce 2.5 cat back on my current VE SS ute and that sounds reasonable and improved performance a bit. And im not to spend a fortune either !

Steve,

Congrats on the purchase mate!! I too pick up my new redline, hopefully before the end of the month....

If you confirm that the cat back 3' exhaust can be used on the new VF let me know! Like you, it's going to be the first think I get done when picking up the car.

Thanks mate!

Hi Alex
Got to do the few things so im moving the order around a bit ... window tint / paint protection this week ...
probably pedders next week to take her down an 1" ... feels like im in a parade float atm :/
I have contacted a few exhaust people .. KPM should have an offering this week ... Sureflo are pretty sure its only minor brackets that changed but they only do 3" apart from the off the shelf stuff they resell.
So not sure which way to go but ive got some time while i work thru each stage.
Wont be going nuts .. its a work car after all
Cheers

I've had a full KPM 3" system (pre SLC and quite loud) on my VE ute for four and a half years now and love it! Even with the cam which makes windows rattle and sets off alarms the only time there is a bit of drone is going up an incline under load in top gear in my A6. Even then it's pretty negligible. Cruising at 100-110kmh there's just a slight background burble but normal conversation is a piece of cake.

I have twin 3" sureflo on the clubby and twin xforce 3" on the senator. One is over 4k one is under 1k. The xforce sounds more V8, the Sureflo more sedate and quality with a subdued rumble. The stainless steel sounds thinner on the Sureflo than the thicker mild steel in the xforce.

Love the Sureflo, but more than happy with the xforce.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll talk to the exhaust shop boys about options, they were happy to put something on and let me test it for a week and modify if need be. I find the twin 3" xforce to be a little bit boomy in the cabin so wanted something pretty quiet for cruising but to at least hear the glorious V8 when I stand on it :)

I agree the KPM sounds awesome and is loud with my cammed 6L but it's not ridiculous. I DON'T agree in the slightest that it doesn't drone. Mine drones terribly between 1600-2000 rpm. It did this just as badly pre-cam as well. For a "drone free exhaust" that costs 5k, it's a joke. I would've been happier to spend half as much on a xforce and cop the drone... It can't be any worse than what I have.

But from everyone I have discussed this with, it doesn't matter what exhaust you get in 3", they all drone. So what would I recommend? A mild steel xforce because it will cost you bugger all and will still drone.

Sorry Damo, disagree totally!!! :)

That may be the case with yours and others but ask anybody who's been in mine and unless they have very sensitive ears I very much doubt they'd say it droned, except as I said a little bit going up an incline under load in top gear. On the highway it's easily quiet enough for anybody to hear anyone else just speaking normally but put your foot down and the sound is pure joy! :jerk:

Note I specified that mine was a pre SLC system, made by Exhaust Technology next door to KPM.

I had a KPM on both my SS-V and the HSV and neither droned at all not even the Auto AFM SS-V. Bothe systems were SLC and and they are still made next door at Exhaust Technology.

I can confirm that my series II Caprice with AFM and a twin 3" sureflo exhaust with remote varex mufflers does not drone when set on quiet. When fully open there is a small hint of drone when AFM kicks in. Around town, with road noise etc it is barely noticeable. I don't notice it at all around town. The only time i notice it is when i am on the freeway on the very smooth roads. Flicking the switch to medium or quiet depending on how fussy i feel is enough to eliminate the drone.

The car has a decent exhaust note when cruising, and sounds good when given some stick. It would sound even louder/deeper if i did the cats/headers.

I know a lot of people don't like xforce stuff, but my hand was forced at the time as it was the only solution available to stop drone on the freeway. To be honest, i think it sounds decent enough and i'd do it again if i couldn't be guaranteed of no drone.

Just remembered I have a video which illustrates it. Can also provide plenty of other footage as my in car camera (from HSV Listy on here) operates every time I start the car till I turn it off. Unfortunately I had the window open when that was taken so there's a bit of typical ute wind buffetting even though I have a windshield.

Also have about 100GB of footage from the last 6 months. If anyone wants I'll see if I can find an example of the worst drone it experiences (up the hill after Warragul Rd on Monash Fwy heading out of the city).

Maybe it's because yours is a ute? Mine drones very very badly. It's worse than the 2.5" catback I had on my V6 Calais as its naturally a lot louder. I've spoken to a few guys who have sedans and have had bad droning. Maybe we just got dud systems? I note that all of the systems I have heard are SLC.

I took my car to chev and Gary himself told me that the drone "hurts your ears"!

Trust me to be stuck with the droney system.

And yes my auto has been extensively tuned.

Had an almost identical system on my previous SSV sedan and being a year older before they'd improved them it did drone under load a bit more but again on the highway was fine. Again it was pre SLC and I suspect that was the difference.

I had a KPM 2.5 inch catback on my AFM wagon. Droned enough (on 4 or 8 cylinders)for me to on sell it and be happier with $200 j pipes (in terms of drone).

To the OP, all you can do is listen to others experiences and cars, go from there. Everyone's interpretation of drone/boom is different.

By coincidence brought in the micro SD card from the camera when I got home earlier. Think I've been ripped though!! Bought a 32GB class 10 card from one of those daily deals websites (have to look up which later). Initially they sent me a class 4 which I sent straight back and then they sent me what is labelled as a class 10. However, it's only transferring data to my PC at 967kb/sec which is ridiculously slow, so the 25GB of data on there is going to take 7.5 hours to copy across!! :nutkick: I was hoping to put some files from my trip home from the city last night up but will have to wait till tomorrow. Have also downloaded an app for my phone which will give me read/write speeds for the card and another I have to test and compare. My other 32GB card is a class 6 and I've seen speeds of around 12MB/sec which is more like it!

Have got a clip on the same bit of road from the other week with the windows up.

Some clips from last night's trip home from the city inc a burst in the tunnel  and going up two rises, the first just before Warragul Rd (radio muted) continuing on up the hill past Warragul Rd which is where my car experiences its worst "drone" - most people won't even pick it up from the clip it's so minor. :D

I got it from HSV Listy (Tony) on here (bigtony20062007 on eBay, though he currently has nothing listed so may be on holiday). If you PM him on here or let him know you're on LS1 he'll give you a better price and/or free shipping.

See www.ebay.com.au/itm/221097975937?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item337a776081 on eBay which I'm sure is the same I've got.

It's an awesome little camera, with much more than just recording facilities. It also has GPS and hooks into Google maps if you play back through its own built in player if you have an internet connection. See the sample below which is a bit of the clip above played through its own inbuilt player (which is automatically written to every micro SD card you format using the camera, so always there). Played on a pc it has excellent HD (1920 X 1080) clarity, just that the process of me editing then uploading to YouTube causes some loss of clarity. The only thing I'd change is the GPS updates on speed are fairly slow, so if you plant the foot it takes a while to catch up. He does have a race car version which samples 5 times per sec but that's a big step up in price. I swap between two 32GB micro SD cards which each give around 8 hours recording.

Unfortunately I have to use video capture software to record the full thing and that has my old CPU working at 100% so the Google maps update is a bit jerky and slow. If played on any half decent pc without trying to also video capture it at the same time it keeps up fine. I've had the camera for probably a year now and love it! I don't know if I pointed it out to you when you were in the car but it's quite discreet sitting up in front of the mirror and many people don't even realise it's there. :D I also have one of Tony's GPS trackers hidden in my car - again, great value!!

That is interesting. Xforce told me the ute was the only bolt on option that could utilize the VE exhaust that didnt involve shifting hangers and that the sedans would need to be moved. And that the rest of there line up would be ready in 3 weeks.
As for the headers apparently the passenger side bolts straight up but the the drivers side needs to be butchered to clear some sensor/unit.
When i held up a set of ve R8 headers they looked like they will def foul on the steering assembly. Hard to know what to believe now.
