Hi there guys,

I'm planning on buying an ex-government VE at an auction on Wednesday and was looking at some of the cars today. I have a question that could probably be answered by looking in the user manual but there weren't any in the cars I looked at, and I can not find one online at all (if anyone can put me onto a link for one that would be great though). The cars I'm looking at are 2011 MY12 3.0L SIDIs.

I couldn't actually drive any of the cars there, but I found that when you move the shifter to the left it displays m1 (which I assume is manual gear 1), but then you can tap it up or down then it displays s1 or s2. What's that all about? Is that selecting two different sports modes for automatic gear shifts?

I'm really keen to find out how that slide to the left function works. From the bits and pieces I've heard I think when it's slid to the right that activates "power mode" to make it rev and shift a bit harder and generally use more fuel but it still changes gears by itself. When you start tapping up or down though, then it activates manual mode such that it won't change gears on its own. Am I on the right track here?

Also, if anyone could suggest any simple things I can check out on my perspective purchase to see if it's going to be a good car or not (keeping in mind I can't actually test drive it) that would be great.

thanks!

Watch for repairs on ex police cars, mates work does the sale cars some are good cars(look for country cars) service sticker and some are pigs. Otherwise you have factory warranty so piece of mind.

YES you have it worked out / push to left is sport mode ,tap up /tap down is manual mode ,it will still go back to 1st gear at a stop light by itself in manual mode if you don't change it down by your self ,but won't change UP un lessless you tap up (pull the stick back towards you )

I see, and what's the difference between the 'M' and the 'S'?

Would I be correct in saying that if you slide it to the left to activate automatic shifting sports mode, it shows you what gear you're in as S1, S2 etc, but if you're in manual shift mode it shows what gear you're in as M1, M2 etc

My guess is that "d" is conventional drive, slide across for "sports" automatic, then manual after you shift the lever
