Hi all,

Managed to pick up some genuine 18" VT Clubsport wheels to finish off my concept monaro. Only problem is, they seem to have small cuts/abrasions on the spokes. Not sure exactly how its been caused, but I would like them fixed up. I was thinking maybe paint remover, or sandblasting, then a new coat of paint, but not sure if it'll work or not. Pics provided. What are your thoughts on getting them back to a decent condition?

How weird, hsv rims with Holden badges.
I assume they did that with the concept monaro too. Funny that's all

Looks as though they've previously been repainted - but with bad prep work. I'd take them to a rim repairer/restorer & get them to strip/prep/paint the rims. The added advantage in using a repairer is that you can also get them to fit the tyres & rebalance - without the risk of a tyre shop gouging your nice new rims.

Possibly the clearcoat crazing, as is happening on my rims. I was told by one wheel repairer (not the one that did mine) that nobody in Australia has the equipment to re-clearcoat rims properly and therefore any repaired wheel which has been clearcoated will eventually do it.

These are V2 Series 1 Monaro CV8 rims, hence the Holden badge. The VT GTS had a gold colour to them, not silver.

I got 2 of my Monaro rims repaired/repainted approx 7 years ago. They haven't crazed & look exactly the same as the other 2 (original factory finish) rims. Do these all silver rims even have a clear coat - or is the clear coat finish only given to the shadow chrome type rims ???

I have no idea which rims are clearcoated and which aren't except that my DTM Shines are and up close a couple have similar crazing to that.

Silver or any coloured wheels for that matter are usually clearcoated with much the same finish as your car panels when they are repainted by a panel shop and possibly by wheel repairers also. aswell as most machined and chrome wheels. for example the original chrome redline wheels are clearcoated from factory.
exception to this is powdercoating/plastidip etc.

no one in australia has the capability to clearcoat machined or chrome wheels. like the dish on your DTM's wonks. But as stated above the coloured wheels like the picture are painted with the same process as a cars panel.

As for the picture of the wheel i would definately say it is a combination of bad prep work and too much material on the wheel (colour and clear) could also be caused by what may be underneath that they have painted over.
My advice is strip back to bare metal using sodablasting as sandblasting will pit the alloy and paint stripper will take forever.. Then speak to your local wheel repairer/panel shop to repaint original colour.

Capri silver wasn't it. I liked that colour. Would love the paint code for that one to have my SS rims done. Got one code off the net but alas it was not a valid code.
