Has anyone got or been looking at the new Jeeps? I reckon they look pretty nice and having test drove an SRT today, HOLY F#CK who would have known 2.3t of metal could move so fast? The are a seriously quick machine for the size and seem to be fairly well stacked with equipment.
Seriously considering one for the family duties/wife. They definitely don't handle like a performance sedan as you could imagine but it doesn't do to bad a job and did i mention the noise? One of the best factory exhaust sounds out there! The interior is fairly nice as well, don't rate the foot hand brake and there is no foot rest either but on a whole the interior is about right for the price, the instrument guage is a fully customisable LCD screen with over 100 different options to display.
I did a few 0-100 and with the internal times had a best of 5.1sec and a worst of 5.4 using the launch control (i was faster manually), the 8 speed ZF is a silky smooth box and very fast through the cogs as well.
Any way what does everyone think? Any one got an opinion based on the previous model?
Cheers

love them !
These would have to be the best looking 4WD on the market at the moment. Very muscular and just has a great stance.
Sadly, having seen one first hand getting into mountains of trouble on the beach owing to the failure of the 4WD system I would NEVER take one off road..... (and having heard a zillion other similar stories on 4WD forums)
If you're after a poser car to park outside Cafe's, it's perfect. If you want to use it for what it's intended for (ie: Serious Off-roading), buy a Landcruiser / Prado or a Pajero.

Exactly right mate, the SRT actually has very limited 4wd ability and would never see anything more than say what an AWD could do, your right i guess it is a posers car much like the 300c but as you said they are a great looking bit of kit.

Without even trying he said he would do it for $80k drive-away so there is obviously some room to move in them, whilst giving it a boot fulf for a good hour the fuel avg was reading 21l/100km but for about a half hour loping back to the dealer it dropped dramtically down to 17l/100km.
I guess if your worried about the fuel bill you wouldn't buy something like that.

Seen a few around Melbourne, they've very in-your-face. Not quite to the Hummer or FJ level but close. A white one with the black SRT grille looks mean. Heard one on an on-ramp and it sounded sweet.
It's a silly big car and the fuel 'economy' is ridiculous (a 2.3-tonne Q7 TDI does 7.8L/100km combined) but it all really depends on what you're after ... I say go for it :teach:

They are an awesome package and i would replace my pajero in a heart beat and give me my V8 fix in lieu of a VF HSV...

its a good thing they got rid of the center exhaust with proper duals so now you can actually attach a hitch and tow shite. I really like the newer gen cherokkee design, it seems to be the cherokee we've been waiting for for years, they jusst starting to roll out the turbodiesels here as well. SRT8's are no slouch, they really have momentum for a big tin can. At 475hp stock, its probably one of the most powerful N/A suv's out there. They also have those massive 6 pisston front brembos to help them stop all that weight.

They are pretty quick that is for sure, i reckon it'd give the new R8 SV a run for it's money (in a straight line of course). I had it down to 5.1sec 0-100kmh after only a few goes admittedly with the on board timer but still.
The brakes bite and bite hard and really do a good job of washing off the speed, they seem to be very dusty though looking at the rims. They also don't seem to fade even after some higher speed stops.

Funny thing is they are actually smaller internally than a VE in all most all areas. It'll do 5000 - 7000k's a year at most so not to concerned with the fuel side of things.

Aye, thats because there are dual sided piston brakes which get proper cooling lol, the earlier models have the 4 piston versions up front. Dusting is quite common with the oem brembo brake pads, but also this is a damned heavy car that may be eating away at the brakes a little quicker, some hawk pads shoudl solve most of the issue.

How is an srt 8 a posers car? I'm pretty sure all hsvs are in "poser" category. But I love them. We looked at one for the missus. When you look at the direct competition bmw x5 m, amg ml63, Porsche cayenne turbo. All well over 100k In the high performance SUV market they are a bargain.

Wow that's nasty. Reminds me of the wheels test of the kluger when it rolled over. I wonder how the srt would fair in that test

It seems the car was overloaded when the test was conducted.http://www.caradvice.com.au/183883/jeep-grand-cherokee-passes-another-rollover-test/

An expensive 4WD that is crap off-road..... Doesn't get much simpler than that.
(and based on the video above, it doesn't look like it's terribly capable on road either)

Yeah pretty piss poor really, it pisses me off when manufacturers try to make excuses about the failings of a test. It is exactly what Toyota did when Wheels mag rolled the Kluger on a dirt road test. It was a clear failing in the ESP calibration and they simply fobbed it of for testing the car wrong! :eeeeek:
The one thing the SRT does have is the adaptive Bilstein dampers as opposed to the tested cars air bag set-up. I am pretty confident the SRT is a decent handler after watching a few online reviews on and off the track, my quick road test also confirms it's a sure footed car albeit not tested to the extremes of the other tests.
One thing i realised is it is actually only a 4 star Euro ncap car. In this day and age that's not too good.

I'm more than happy to be wrong. But the "moose test" on a lower model is an unfair comparison when the subject is on srt 8.
I would love to same test in a srt 8. It will probably preform similar but still like to see it.
You always need to compare apples with apples not with pears.
This is just my opinion.

I reckon the SRT would cope just fine, it's fairly stiff and rides a fair bit lower than the elevated air bag set-up of the lower end models.

If its going to be a soccer-mum car, or a sales rep car, I say go for it. I'd love to see a new Landcruiser or Patrol do the same test they did and come out any better. In the end, its like a Cayenne or an X6, everyone knows its not something you take through the sand dunes, or down a mud pit, or off road at all. But damn do they sound good!!

I just bought a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT and I highly recommend purchasing one, I love it. It's fantastic to drive on short and long trips, great on the dirt as well, I can't get over how quick it is, but it is a lot quicker than my VY SS. Sounds great too and is also nice and quiet while cruising with the family. The sunroof and Harmon Kardon stereo package is a must. I took some shots of it the other day, here's one of them. Cheers.

Good to hear more reports about these rigs.
Unfortunately you will need a post count of 20 before you can post any pics.
Jeep get a bit of a bad wrap on some forums, lots of recalls etc, but I haven't heard anyone complain about the SRT. Everyone here still happy with theirs?

Like I said, I couple of friends of mine have each bought one, and they do not have a bad word to say.
"Off Road Ability",.....well it ain't no rock crawler, that's for sure, it's an "SUV" FFS,...obviously if you wanted a "serious" off roader, you simply wouldn'y buy one of these, that is definitely not its purpose, and for sure it is definitely a bit of an "over the top" vehicle, but if ya want something this size, ya want some grunt, & ya want a bit of fun, then it's pretty hard to beat for the money.
My friends knew exactly what they wanted when they bought one, & they got what they wanted in bucket loads!

Has been retested in 2014, now passes with flying colours...
Also the WK2 Jeep, shares the same platform as the Mercedes Benz M class (W166)...
There's a black SRT around my area, looks tough as...

I think some might be expecting too much from SUV type vehicles, the centre of gravity would be a lot higher than any normal car. I was travelling home from work Friday, just over a week ago and traffic is crap, further down the road there is a Mercedes SUV (I don't know its model) on its right side, looking like someone has made a left turn into a street and put it on its side. This is in a 60km/h zone, for those who know Kissing Point Rd in Sydney near the intersection of Silverwater road. I have a Forester plus the Clubby, a VE SV6 and a Fiesta. You can't drive the Forester like you can drive the others.

I agree, I think you need to do your homework before purchasing a vehicle like the Jeep SRT and fully understand what you are and are not getting. Basically I wanted an SS Commodore for rural dirt roads and this vehicle covers that in spades. It does not have the ground clearance to be a serious 4WD offroader. If you love your V8's and still want to do some decent offroad work then the Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland with the 5.7L Hemi V8 with the 18" rims and all terrain tyers would be the vehicle to consider but at that price the V8 Landcruiser might be a better option. I live in the country with plenty of dirt and sealed backroads that were too uncomfortable in the SS so the SRT ticks all the boxes I needed. On my above post, if you are using Google Chrome as a web browser, right click on the image icon and click 'open image in new tab', you can then click on the new tab up in the top tool bar and you will be able to view my SRT in my Flickr Photostream if you are interested.

Hi All,
Thought I'd add my 20c worth.
The 2013/14 Jeep GC platform is different to the previous models, redvxr8clubby is right in saying that it's co-developed with Mercedes Benz's ML platform. When Fiat took over, they improved it with the ZF 8 spd gearbox.
I considered buying the SRT8 over the HSV VF GTS as a change is as good as a holiday, was tired of worrying about ride height and gutter damage, etc, it was cheaper and all the review I read on it we're very positive. The only thing that put me off was the dealer's response to me was "we have more buyers than we can supply", some were just rude, and was not prepared to negotiate a deal that I was happy with despite being ready to sign. Needless to say several of them called me 'after' I bought my GTS to come back as they were now prepared to do a deal...I told them to beat it.
I would still consider the Jeep GC SRT's latest model but not the earlier ones, pre-2014, as they do have a bad rap.

Hi jkgmh - did the dealer quote a rough delivery time? I'm getting BS delivery times on my SSV order and am thinking of cancelling. I've looked over the Jeep as well and there's lots to like.

Picked up our 2014 JEEP SRT a week or so ago, after looking at the VF GTS, SENATOR, and GRANgE,
so much more car than the HSVs in my opinion, great price for what your getting and have made a mess of a few mates VF 340 clubs ports and maloos,
can't fault them in anyway, quick as any sub 90k car, plenty of room for the family, and don't need to be scared of taking it down a dirt track, handles the corners better than my VF SSV on coil overs,
all round great rig, worth considering
