Came across this kickstarter the other day. Watched the video and have to say it's the BEST OBD tool for our GMLAN vehicles that I have found.

Did you pick yourself up one Craig at all? Does look pretty good. I'd like it to be able to program aswell, not like a full tech 2 if course, but there's some good scan tools that can change settings and what not. I wonder if something like this could do that.

Nic,

I did back it. Paid $79 for it and shipping is free but it won't be available until May this year. I like the door unlock/lock, windows and remote start function all compatible with GMLAN vehicles from 2006.

I understand the remote start most likely won't work for us etc but the other stuff is OK.

I know there are some others on the market cheaper but this one does more than them and they say it's the quickest one so I am happy to back their kickstarter anyway.

If you want to wait until I get mine you can come around again here to have a look at what it does etc. Although the bad part is that if you buy now it's $79 and will be $120 when it comes out.

Craig

It will work in a VF. It works with all GMLAN Chev's or Holden's.

I just placed an order for 2 of them. Thought the Old Man would like it as a b'day present for his Statesman. Sounds like the project has alot of good stuff ahead of it.

Just looking at the device, imagine if you could create a touchscreen dash and have all that information integrated into the car on a daily basis. Cost would be a factor, but coolness factor would be off the charts.

It would be good to integrate into the display on VFs

I've already got the BT version of the MX (Currently US$99.95). It has GMLAN (GM SW-CAN and other CanBus protocols) anyway. Bonus, is that unlike the wifi version, your device (phone/tablet) can be connected to other wifi for internet.
Coupled with my carPC, I should get most diagnostic information on the 2-din screen. I'm still tossing up on frontends though.

NOTE to ALL: OBDCanEx is the app which does the GMLAN stuff (lights, windows, auto-start etc). The VE commodore is confirmed as working. HOWEVER, it requires the car to already have this functionality built-in to the GMLAN, which I believe Holden integrate "less" into. I might see if I can get any GMLAN functions going on the VZ. More importantly, they have an OBD2/CANbus sniffer which may help in picking up non-standard codes (such as info sent to the dash LCD screen which I've been searching for, then I can send stuff to the dash).

Since I've got free credit on Google Store, might buy CanEx and see how it goes.

EDIT: Looks like the "extended" version of OBDCanEx is not available yet.

I second that. Would be a good little project for someone out there to make a few dollars off me and others .

From what i read into it, you are not charged until the funding donation/pledge period has ended (and they have reached their target to begin large scale manufacturing).

I bought one from eBay for $10. Works via Bluetooth to my Android phone. Apart from remote start and door lock etc which my VF has anyway, it is exactly the same. I use Torque Pro (from play store) and gives me everything I need. Don't see why you need to spend so much money. They only give diagnostics and will not change any settings. I'll post some screen shots later

The OBDLink MX bluetooth/wifi series also have CanBUS support which DOES allow you to change settings as well as send/receive packets on the internal GMLAN network. That includes anything from seat position controls, audio controls, power windows, HVAC and pretty much anything else connected via single-wire. The cheaper OBD dongles don't have it (I have a cheapy ebay one as well, but it has since died). The MX dongles also have a few extra features such as the ability to auto-sleep after usage (so you can leave it plugged in and not drain your battery) as well as a far higher transmission speed so you can read more PIDs simultaneously. On top of that, they're damn tiny compared to the ebay ones (about half the size).

As far as being a scam, it's not. Scantool (the company) already make the MX bluetooth version which I have and it's great. The kickstarter is for the WiFi version as well as trying to drive development of the related apps/software. The hacking of the kickstarter page is and entirely different issue however.

If anyone is still interested but doesn't want to use kickstarter, the Bluetooth versions are currently on sale for $99 on the scantool.net site.
