View Full Version : C63 Gone,...Audi S3 next week!

For a number of reasons, we've sold our C63, luckily to a very caring & appreciative new owner.
We just weren't using it enough, Wifey loved it, would have liked it as her Shopping car, but we both agreed that it really was "too much car" for that. And it was absolutely like brand new, I couldn't stand the thought of some imbecile damaging it in a shopping centre etc.
So, the question was, "What to buy for wifey"?..She already had an immaculate Astra SRI hatch (2.2 engine)& LOVES it, so something similar, with more power was what she was after. We narrowed it down to two choices, the A45, or the Audi S3 Hatch. Now you all know about the A45, so I ain't gonna bore you with the details. But we could've got a white one with black wheels immediately, due to a cancelled order.
The S3 has 206KW (280HP) (Quattro A.W.D.)with a 6 speed distronic Gear box. It'll do 0-100 in 5 secs, so it's no slouch, but not as quick as the A45.
Anyway, Wifey drove the S3, & was stoked,...didn't want to drive the A45!!..Told her she had to. So, we both drove it. No doubt it's the ultimate hot hatch weapon, no doubt about that at all. But it is very "raw", compared to the Audi. I know there's a few A45 owners here, so I AIN'T KNOCKING THE CAR, it's just that the S3 is just a little bit more "civilized", & more practical for what she wants.
So she decided on a Monsoon grey S3 Hatch, with optional performance pack (Sports interior, B & O Sound, M.R.C. etc etc), and a Panoramic sunroof. Trouble is, these cars are in short supply too, not 12 months delay like A45, but up to 6 months. Luckily a car was found with the specs wifey wanted, & a "swap" was arranged. Saw the car yesterday, & wifey will get it on Thursday!
If any of you guys are wanting a hot hatch, check out the S3, they've only been around sinse Nov '13, and they are very nice,...a bit "under the radar", sort of thing.
We took the books home to read,....Jeez, I couldn't understand a thing,....eeven more complex/electronic etc than the C63,....anyway it's Wifey's car so she can worry about that!
Cheers, Pickles.

Well, in deference to the buyer, I don't really want to mention the price, but I will say this, ..I put a realistic price on the car, it wasn't one of the dearest '12 "update" cars on there, ......but I have no doubt that it was the best!! and I wasn't going to drop the price, simply because it was worth it. When the buyer saw our car, he didn't even mention the price, he just said "That's the car I want", & he bought it.
I guess it depends upon what one defines as cheap. There are a lot of pre-update/non P.P. packs out there, with high ks,...I wouldn't buy one of them, but there aren't that many private sale Update P.P.'s, ours also had the LSD, a fairly uncommon option.
I'm happy, the buyer's happy, & wifey's happy,....because she gets her new S3!
Cheers, Pickles.
Out of curiosity what's the LSD option worth along with the pp pack worth? Really interested in a new one to replace the caprice. No point in calling a dealer yet as I'm not quite ready to purchase so don't want to waste their time n have them calling chasing a sale

Performance pack:..Engine (extra 22KW, SLS Rods, pistons & crank), bigger brakes, alcantara sreering wheel, C.F. rear spoiler, is around $12K, the LSD is around $4K, from memory.
G'Day Ray, Of course I bought the S3 from Berwick!!! Where else would I go??!! Dean looked after Wifey & I very well. There are some very good guys at your dealership, & we know that Simon France will look after wifey's new "baby" very well. I will catch up with you.

S3 is a great alternative to the A45 for the blue-rinse set. Smoother, quieter, more comfortable, slower....
Hi Pickles,
We have recently looked for a new vehicle to replace our VW R32 that we will be selling soon. Looked at the Mercedes A45 AMG, Audi S3 & BMW 135 in January & for a variety of reasons also decided on the Audi S3 Sportsback with S Performance & driver assistance packages. Ours has been ordered in the Estoril Blue Crystal effects colour & we are expecting to be delivered around the end of May.
May need to compare notes with you in the future ;) .
Cheers,

Thanks Andrew, It's not an "A" 3, it's an "S"3!!' (not a lot different in looks, but the mechanics are different!)
Yeah, it's a bit of a long story. Wifey wanted "something different" for her "everydayer" & she decided she wanted a LandRover Defender, so we ordered one, took 6 months to come from the U.K., but when it arrived, she found it a bit "cumbersome" etc, but....I loved it. She wanted the C63 as her everydayer, but eventually she was persuaded that it really was a bit too nuch car for that, so we sold it.
There aren't that many choices in the Hot Hatch area that appealed to us , only two for us anyway, & for our own reasons, we chose the S3,...Wifey absolutely loves it. As I said in the O.P. ,not quite as fast as the A45, but for all intensive purposes, for what wifey & I will use the car for, it is ideal,...ticked all the boxes for us.
Cheers, Pickles.

G'Day Michael, well you looked at the same cars we did.
But I tell you what, once wifey'd driven the S3, she was simply not interested in anything else. Our spec is Performance Package & Panoramic Roof. Dealer was able to source that spec, so we didn't have to wait.
CSV, yes, I'm aware that the upcoming Golf R has the same engine, but I think the S3 body may be a little bigger. No doubt the Golf R is a top unit, but the waiting list for that, when it's released, will be long, I reckon.
The S3 is a bit "under the radar" at the moment, Audi haven't made a big song & dance about it, but Audi Aus are selling all they can get, & more...4-6 month wait for customer order cars, so we were lucky to get ours.
Cheers, Pickles.

G'Day Mate. The Alcantara wheel was the one thing we didn't like on the C63. I was worried about wear, getting greasy, matted etc with body/hand sweat etc, & general use, so we bought driving gloves so our hands would not come into contact with the wheel.
The 507 has an alcantara shifter, owners are going beserk to fit one to their C63,......it's the LAST thing I'd be doing!
You might have guessed,...I ain't a fan of the stuff,...not on a steering wheel anyway.

nice.. did you look at the sedan S3 option (here or coming?)
Well, We knew one was coming, (in a couple of months), but we wanted a hatch. What I can't understand is why the sedan is going to be $2K dearer than the hatch,...it's usually the other way round?
There's also the thought, maybe next year, of an "RS"3, using the 5 cyl. engine,...that will be "interesting".
Regards, Pickles.
CSV rulz,
Yes, we considered the new MK VII Golf R as we have been very happy with our R32. However, the Golf R is not going to be released in Australia until the 2nd half of this year & hence the wait was a bit too long for us. Also, the latest Audi S3 is quite competitively priced compared with earlier versions & the quality of materials inside & out is at least 1 step up on the VW equivalent & in our opinion better than the A45 AMG so we decided to go for it instead at of course some premium.
Cheers,
Michael

Congrats on the purchase. You are right about the A/CLA45, it is a firm little bugger and if the wifey found the S3 more suitable then good on her - nothing wrong with that. The RS3 will be more hard-edged to compete with the 45s. The Merc engine guy who headed the 265kw/450Nm 45 engine has been poached over to Audi so we are seeing the dawn of the 4 cycl power wars IMHO. Expect next 4 cyclinder powerhaus from Germany to have 500Nm and close to 300Kw. Nuts! V8s were struggling to make that not so long ago.

Me thinks your going to cry real tears at the loss of that C63….AUDI. Was 2 weeks past I negotiated the purchase of one 2014 plate Q5 with the BIG 3 L Turbo Diesel for $74K Flat driveaway………Firstly they laughed at me , then advised they required 88K . I then thanked the salesman at Fortitude Valley most kindly for his time and advised him that Lexus + BMW a couple of doors were doing deals right now………..Didn’t take long…..18 hours later , phone call received and $74K drive away accepted with full tecknik pac etc ....deal accepted ………….:woohoo:

Well, Wifey took delivery of her S3 this morning.
She is stoked,...., and so am I.
I know it ain't no C63, I know it ain't no V8 stormer, BUT, for what it is, with a 2L turbo engine, it is absolutely brilliant. PLENTY of performance, absolutely beautiful finish, the electronics are amazing, ....., it's got all the "stuff" & more,...lap timer, MRC, different "modes" for virtually anything.
I am VERY impressed. If you're interested in a smaller car, anything like an A45, CLA45, EVO, WRX, Golf R etc etc etc, in fact any high performance smaller car, do yourself a favour,...just check out the S3.
Cheers, Pickles.

Thanks for that, That is a 2 door version, which we don't have out here, but that report is a pretty good one, it sums up the S3 pretty well. It doesn't "look" like a hot hatch, but it certainly "goes" like one. We have the distronic option, paddles etc, which a quicker than the manual.
Obviously a video can not show everything, but as I've said, the "electronics", & the visual stuff that come up on that screen are quite amazing, not that I'll ever understand them all!!,...but Wifey thinks they're pretty good.
All in all, a very impressive package.

G'Day Dave.
I actually like the Defender very much. It opens up a huge new driving experience. I've been really pissed off with all of the new & many restrictions placed on drivers during recent times, mostly centerd around "speed speed speed" ra ra ra,...don't have to worry about any of that stuff now, because the Defender ain't very fast! So, I just sit in the left hand lane & enjoy driving it.
I went for a drive in the S3 yesterday, the performance from the relatively small 2L engine is remakable,..the turbo makes a lot of difference,...heaps of low down torque.
Wifey's gone to visit one of her girlfriend this afternoon, so I'll jus spend a bit of time in the garage & get a bit of dust off Gracie,...all is good!
Cheers, Pickles.
NB: There's a guy in the U.K. who's dropped an LS2 383C.I. into a Defender,...it's a bit quicker than ours!

Haven't seen a really good image of the sedan before, & it looks good.
Any drive experiences of the S3 that you'd like to share?,...I've already given mine,....it's gonna surprise a few people, that's for sure.
Wifey was busy today, so I was able to get out in the S3,....geez, it's a brilliant car,.....ok, it ain't as "brutish" as the C63, but it ain't supposed to be, but as a smaller "hot hatch", it's tops.
Anyone who hasn't driven one, should do so.

Pickles when you refer to the S3 as a hatchback, do you mean the 5 door S3 Sportback as shown on the Aussie Audi site?
I’m a bit confused as the link from ‘mathewfnorbert’ is for an S3 4 door Sedan and the earlier photo from ‘whitels1ss’ is of a 3 door hatch.
Is there more than one variation available of the S3 in Australia?
Did any of you fellows test the new BMW 235i while looking around at cars in this segment?
By the way, that S3 Sportback is a nice looking bit of gear, congratulations on the buy.

S3 comes in Sportback as per aussie site and the S3 'sedan' yet to be released which is what i ordered. 0-100km/h in 5 and torque everywhere, they are similar to the AMG 45.
I think the S3 has been flying under the radar, but with long wait list on AMG the S3 and soon to arrive 235 they will get orders.
I considered the bmw but preferred the larger cabin of the S3 or AMG, BMW is quite small. And the engineer in me wanted 4 wheel drive

Audi tend to not go over the top in styling and sometimes a badge is really all that can tell them apart to the non enthusiast, Mate of mine who is long time Ford fan and has Gt Cobra in the shed has now moved into the Audi camp and has a SQ5 and a TT RS. The TT RS looks very similar to a standard TT which I always though suited a Hairdresser ect, BUT that RS badge means ALOT......It is the 5 Cylinder turbo and with tune only is Flat 4 Sec high 3 Sec Car.

Spot on, I totally agree. The AWD drive is a big consideration over the RWD and the BMW has no room in the rear for anyone other than a small child.

No worries at all driving it!
But seriously, the S3 is a VERY good small car. Obviously not the same sort of car as the C63, and it doesn't try to be. It's a very easy, "light" car to drive, very responsive, & 206KW & 380Nm gives it plenty of poke.
karen absolutely loves it, & it's really perfect for her. I'd recmmend an S3 to anyone who's looking for a hatch of this size, with a bit of go.
Having said that, we've just got back from doing a 2000K trip to Broken Hill in our LandRover Defender!

Obviously, you know your cars.
However, let me tell you, yes, the Defender 90 is a "shorty", so yeah, she does "pitch" a bit, but mate, on some of the country roads that we drive on, the HSV/C63 suspensions ain't too "smooth" either, so after 2000k in the Defender, let me tell you, it ain't that bad,...however, if ya wanna overtake a B Double or a B triple in a Defender, well yes, that can create a few questions?
Cheers, Pickles.

ended up with panther black crystal paint, s-performance pack #2 (different rims), assistance pack, black exterior styling pack, panoramic sunroof, privacy glass + tinted front windows, folding/heated mirrors - has all options excluding roof racks.
Our S3 will not be delivered until ~ end of July 14 :-( . It will be the Estoril Blue Crystal effect colour with S-Performance pack, driver assistance package & folding/heated mirrors. Apparently the Estoril Blue Crystal effect paint is in short supply & has delayed manufacture by some weeks.
Did any of you read the recent Subaru WRX STI vs Audi S3 vs Mercedes A45AMG comparo in Motor Magazine? I thought the conclusion was spot on after our comparison between the A45AMG & Audi S3.
Cheers,
Michael

How are we going with our S3s guys,...anyone taken delivery yet?
Pickles.
Karen mistakenly inserted a C63 picture as well,....we're not very good at this stuff, can't be bothered trying to delete it. Anyway, she's done nearly 5ks in the S3 now, & absolutely loves it. It has DEFINITELY got all the performance she needs,...until the "RS3" anyway she says!

Love the colour of the new Audi.

Ha ha ha, no, the S3 was never for me!
After karen decided she thought the Defender was too "cumbersome" for everyday driving (to the shops etc), I actually decided I DID like it, and whilst Karen would've kept the C63 as her everydayer, she did realize it was a bit "over the top" for that. But she still wanted something with a bit of "go". So, it was either the A45 or the S3, and she chose the S3, & like I said, It's just perfect for her.
The other interesting consequence of Karen owning the S3, is that she now does most of the city driving, so that she now has to put up with speed cameras, idiots sitting on 50ks in a 60 zone, right lane hoggers etc etc, which suits me fine. All I have to do is continually tell her to "watch your speed"!
Still love my country driving though,..which is where the Defender is great.
