Hi all,i own a vy11 clubby and need to change my plugs and thought may as well do leads while i'm at it.Was looking on ebay and saw genuine holden ac delco plugs and leads going for $150.
and decided to check with local dealer for convenience really.I nearly fell over at the price they wanted for genuine leads, was quoted $72.68 each x that by 8 and they wanted $581.44 then plugs on top of that.Didnt even get to find out what they wanted for them.Just abit puzzled why the price diff and has anyone else used the ebay ones. The other thing was the guy questioned me why I would even change the leads as he thinks you should never have to.

Have a look @ some OS suppliers in the US, bought some off Speedinc last year for a fraction of the price!

Must admit I haven't priced leads for many years but I'm amazed at that price!! $72.68 a set I would believe more........

The leads do eventually break down but are normally good for many years I believe and the genuine article is as good as any. :yup: If they were $72.68 a set I'd possibly do it if you're keeping the car as a preventative measure against loss of power. They can easily be tested to see if the resistance in them is too great.

Hi wonky yer I made him check twice it wasn't for a set but unfortunately no.Yer had the car since 45000klm now has 206,000 on it up and down the freeway everyday sitting at 2000revs and just recently started to miss a little at about 4000revs and mechanic suggested to first change the plugs to see if that's the slight miss caused by sitting at low revs a lot of the time and thought may aswell change the leads.

Man I would say they saw you coming. I went and tried to find a receipt for the leads I purchased and could not. However scoured old credit card statements and found one for the time I changed my leads (13/6/13) and there was a payment to my local dealer of $145.50 and I though that was pricey. However when you consider they run the standard leads on big power engines they would seem to be a very good quality lead.

How do you become a trade club member whitels1? Be a mechanic I'd gather?

:yup: you have to either have a registered workshop, be a licensed dealer, or spare parts shop.

In post #1 the OP says he owns a "VYII Clubby" Peter.

Yes bought two sets of 8.5mm MSD's from Bryan of Speed inc

MSD32819 MSD LS1 Superconductor 8.5mm Wires @ US $61.99 set
Just remember freight & exchange rates to be factored in.
What I did is bought a few other bits & pieces including two boxes of OEM oil filters to suit both my engines.

It's not as silly as it sounds. It could be possible that the spares dude had the wrong listing?

Ok gave 2 more Sydney dealers a ring today,1 quoted $260 and the other $380.Dont understand such variations.Think grabbing some of the net is the go.
Thanks mick for the info, also noticed a 7lt clutch on there for $560 inc flywheel which feels like I might be needing in coming months.

Just a note to add that the cheap plugs mentioned in this thread are the cheaper AC Delco (rather than genuine GM) platinum ones.
If someone quotes "genuine" VY2 plugs, they will be quoting the much dearer genuine Iridium ones.
Also, Trade Club is like anything "trade". If you aren't in the trade or don't have an inside contact then it's not exactly something you can just walk in and expect.

That's obvious, however the reason I asked the specifics is because I have a trade, it's not a mechanics trade but still a trade.

My answer might be "obvious", but so should the reasons you aren't entitled to it. You want automotive parts but don't have either current automotive employment or an automotive trades certificate? You're not "trade".
Same goes with plumbers, chippies, brickies, chefs, sparkies or whatever wanting stuff off our industry. Same applies for me wanting stuff off any of them, even if I also have my trade qualification to hold in my hot little hand...

Just another story to add to "trade".
Most parts people within it will have experience with taxi drivers expecting "trade" on parts for their own personal vehicles. You should see the look on their faces when you ask for "trade" for your next trip to the airport! :lmao:
Apparently it is only meant to work in one direction. They are, of course, in the transportation business...;)

.........also noticed a 7lt clutch on there for $560 inc flywheel which feels like I might be needing in coming months.

Just don't be fooled into thinking it's a full kit and kaboodle clutch for a W427. There is much confusion surrounding these clutches but my understanding is even though they're called a 7 litre or W427 clutch they are not in fact exactly the clutch used in the the W427. They are instead the clutch Holden are now using in all VT on (maybe VT2 on?) V8s and are stronger than what they used to use, but not exactly the same as the W427 clutch. That said they should be fine for a Clubby.

Hopefully PD can either confirm or put me straight........ :nutkick:
