Hi All,
I recently purchased a VE SS ute (series 1) and love it. I've now bought a reverse camera pack that allows the original screen to be used as the screen.
Im fairly comfortable with the install though the one thing im worried about is breaking any dash surround, etc while installing.
Has anyone got any guides or tips in terms of removing the interior Dash surround, and how to get access through the rear of the cabin into the tray?
any advice would be appreciated (ie.. where there are screws, clips... etc)
cheers

When I had my reverse camera installed 5 yrs ago I created http://www.ls1.com.au/forum/showthread.php?119236
It doesn't really tell you a lot about the actual install but that's really pretty straightforward. As one post in there says, almost the most time consuming part is pulling aside the tub liner to access the plug where the wires from the cabin come through and for running them down to the tailgate. The first pic below is from when I had my actuators fitted and shows where the wires come through. For doing reverse camera you don't need the liner right out.
The second pic is of the wrong side (from my fire extinguisher install) but it shows how to access the bit of the head unit you need (the driver's side is where you need). The bit above the fire extinguisher which is out of position in that pic is the bit you remove to access the side of the head unit where the camera plugs in. There used to be a thread with more detailed info - will see if I can hunt it down for you later (if I forget remind me).

 Oops! Just realised you're talking SS not SSV so what I alluded to above won't work re accessing screen sorry.........
While looking for the other thread (which I suspect is irrelevant now) I came across http://www.ls1.com.au/forum/showthread.php?131857 which may also be of use re fitting the camera itself.

Thanks so much for the post. I should have mentioned that my car is a SSV so All this is definetly relevant! :)
I cant see how to edit the topic title (new to forum).
Wonky - the other thread seems to have no images loading
What im more worried bout is how to get the interior dismantled without breaing clips, etc. From what I see for installation i need to:
Get access to teh side of the ssv stereo (remove console side and under stearing surround (no idea how this part comes off!!)
remove the bottom door rails to run cable to the back of the cabin
remove the side surrounds (where the seabelt, etc is)
remove the back of the cabin to get access to a gromit which will let me feed the cable through.
I havent even thougth about the ute tub liner yet!!
Any advice on any of the above would be appreciated... Id hate to think ill end up breaking everything and not getting it back together ok.
I havent had any luck finding anythingonthe web on dismantling!

Due to my disabilities I have to pay to have such work done, so have never actually done it myself. However, from reading various installation guides and watching my auto elec working on mine it's pretty straightforward. For example, start with pulling the dash strips off. Stick a screwdriver under the edge near the door and pry that end up. Keep levering gently and be aware the clips nearest the console usually are quite firm. I have seen one broken when the guy applied too much force from the door end and bent it too much. Just work your way along without getting too much bend on the strip and be aware the clip near the console usually takes a bit of effort to spring, so a bit of pressure will need to be applied which is fine as long as you aren't applying it right from the other end.
After that it should be fairly obvious where to go next - there's a logical order to the way things can be accessed. From all I've read and seen all the clips etc are fairly sturdy and like the dash strips people are afraid they're going to break stuff, but gentle forcefulness is the key.
If it's of help below is a picture of my dash totally apart for my HSV gauge install. I'll now go back and see if I can find a thread which gives more detail on pulling the dash apart.
PS To get the subject changed use the Contact Us link in the blue bar near the bottom of the page.

Oops! Just realised - looking at that pic it looks like the driver's side dash strip doesn't need to come off anyway to get the panel below the steering column off. I was thinking of when I had my dash cluster changed to a HSV E3 one. From memory now from watching it done you just have to pull the plug from the back of the headlight switch out and then it pretty much comes out. It's obviously not quite that simple but I'm sure once they'd unplugged the headlight switch that bottom panel was out in 10 secs or so.

For my HSV gauge install I wrote up a detailed document for my auto elec compiled from a couple of threads on here eg. http://www.ls1.com.au/forum/showthread.php?97140 and the comment below from another thread (http://www.ls1.com.au/forum/showthread.php?106562) which may help. They're not specifically to do with camera installs but will give you a bit more info.
"It took me about 90 minutes to get the dash apart on my SSV. I found that as long as I was reasonably firm, but not too forceful, the whole thing came apart quite easily. Watch out for the screw behind the right-hand side of the glovebox (hidden by a blank), and take out the ashtray area before you try and pull the centre stack trim. The centre stack was the hardest part to pull off, it's really stuck fast to the bottom centre console. I found that doing one side at a time worked best for me, but if you have a buddy helping then two pairs of hands would help. Oh....and remove the stereo plug and the aerial plug before you try to pull the stereo box out...I spent 10 minutes trying to find a hidden screw before I realised I'd ignored the big red sticker on the front that points out the (obvious) need to pull the plugs!! Installing the replacement pods and lower centre stack is a breeze. "

Thanks for the feedback!!!
I'm going to start taking things apart slowly (I'll install over weeks) and as i get to things im not sure about how i get off ill post a pic up here :)
I'd rather do it slowly than break pieces!!

What I did when doing a Rev Cam install was to rough in all rear wiring first from front to rear then on another day tackled the dash/din part separately!
When you tackle the dash part make sure you give yourself plenty of time as they are very tricky & time consuming to do it right!! :)

Thanks for the replies, all good advice! :)
I've started slowly pulling apart teh dash and have got access to the side of the stereo only to find that i dont have a video plug! (I have the socket but nothign plugged in!). The company that supplied the camera adivsed tis sometimes happens and are providing a plug.
While I wait for it...I plan on running the rest of the wiring from the front to the rear - any advice on gettig the wires from under the steering wheel to the back of the cabin and into the tub?
Looks like I run i through the rail under the door and it is all just held by clips? Then need to run it under the cover of where the seat belt is... again, is this only clips?
Still havent even looked at the back of the ute cabin...I'm assuming there must be screws somewhere here so i can remove the back shelf and get access to teh gromet that goes to the tub?
Thanks again!!!!

I fitted a camera to my ute, I bought my kit from ASL Multimedia, they provided an awesome guide.
I ran the cable on the RHS, didn't remove my tub liner (as I had sports bars and a hardlid, used some yellow-tongue shoved through the cabin grommet into the side of the tray, removed the rear access panel in the liner and pulled it through.

Hi Cashie,
Mine is an ASL Multimedia kit aswell so I'm glad to hear that you were happy with the outcome!!!!!
I agree the guide is quite good but i glazes over a few points and always a surprise when you dont find what you expec fro teh guide!
I have a hard lid as well so plan on not having to remove the tub liner... so you found it easy enough to shove somethign through the grommet to to get it to the rear access panel?
Thanks heaps :-)

If you've got the ASL guide it's all detailed very well and a piece of piss. Just follow all the steps.
It was a bit of a fiddle to get it through without removing the tub liner but certainly do able.
I did genuine reverse sensors on another occasion the same way.

excellent - thanks for the feedback.
I spent the night getting the cable from the stereo to the back of the ute tray (Yep Cashie, Agree that getting the cable through without removing the tray liner was more than just a fiddle!).
So whats left for me is:
Getting the cable from teh backof the tub to the tailgte (any tips? do you feed this under teh bottom? does the spare tire have to come out?)??????????????
Installing camera on tailgate (Ill be fine with his once i get the cable to the tailgate)
Connecting everythgn to the stereo which hopefully should be fine, jst wainting on asl to sende a video input connector as I didnt have one!
Thanks again!

To get the cable from the back of the tub to the tailgate just follow the wiring for the number plate light. From memory it comes from the driver's side taillight. When you put the tailgate down I am pretty sure you can see where the wiring enters the tailgate.

Yep, was a bit of a fiddle, but was much better than trying to get the liner out.. :yup:
I think I found a loom under the car to cable tie to (it could be the taillight harness as mentioned by Wonky), then as Wonky says, follow the tail light harness inside the tail gate and cable tie to it.
Pretty certain I didn't drop the spare wheel.
Warning, removing the rear trim (grab handle assembly) is a bit tricky, I think there were about 3 nuts and a couple of clips, take your time with it and it will be obvious.
I also needed the additional connector for mine, ASL were very quick to ship it out to me when I mentioned it.

Thanks again for the replies!!
I havent had time to look at getting the cable from the rear of the tray to the tailgate but im happy to hear that it shouldnt be too difficult! I'll hopefully get to it in the next day or two.
Thanks Cashie, Luckily I have already had experience removing the grab handle off my old tailgate (as I replaced a tailgate already) so once i get the cable to the tailgate Im confident im going to be ok with teh rest of it from there.
ASL have already shipped my connector - Glad to hear that I wasnt the only one in this situation .
I was concerned whether I'd have some issues given I didnt have the connector and Im already using the ASL IPOD connector but they seem to think that I can piggy back both of them and everythign work fine.
Looking forward to when i can reverse and see something!

Camera all installed and working - thanks for the advice!!
It all ended up being a lot simpler than i expected once i had a bit of time to spend on it!!
only unexpected outcome was that because im using the ASL IPOD connector as well (uses rear AUX) if i slow down under 10k an hour the rear camera comes on!!! I suspect I dont have a choice with this given im running both the camera and ipod connector through rear AUX. Should make for some interesting viewing at traffic lights~

Great you got it going, though the operation is peculiar! I thought the Rear Cam gets the trigger when you select Rev gear? I know you can get a vim that will do what you have but not the usual operation. Did you use another Vim?

I deliberately chose not to wire mine up to reverse, but it does mean I have to press the Aux button to see what the front or rear cameras are viewing. Small price to pay but does mean I can view either camera at any speed (VIM mod) and not have the radio or CD cut out every time I use reverse.

Hi all,
Back where I belong in a Holden after 2 long years, reviving a thread which best suits my question.
Any ideas on suitable brands of reverse camera for a E Series 2 Maloo, it has reasonable display with sensor alerts but to my surprise no reverse camera.
Would want it to utilise display and will be getting auto electric guy to install. What's the ballpark $$ on an install usually cost?
Visibility is pretty bad as it is and don't want to squash anything
Thanks in advance for any guidance.
