Hi guys, just wondering those who have built your own place with TV rooms, media rooms, home theatre room, etc etc what did you all use to sound proof in the walls? What's kind of cost is it. (Obviously changes by size but rough pricing on room size) and how effective was it?

Cheers

I have a full on home theatre room and the builder put some sort of acoustic batts in the walls. They do fark all to reduce sound. I suggest do more research and get decent stuff.

To do it properly you need to isolate the stud walls etc to stop the transfer. I used to work with a acoustic engineer who drew up some sketches for me, aswell as some details to isolate the second story floor to stop sound from foot steps etc but those plans never went ahead and got tossed. I just remember to do it properly the wall framing etc never contacted the outside framing, with plenty of open cell sound absorbing material and double stacked plasterboard (I guess similar to a fire wall).

Am building a house now and asked the architect about this. They explained how they spend a heap on acoustic batts in the wall and then read that they aren't really that much better than just putting in normal insulation. The builder on the job had some acoustic batts installed for a previous client who was absoulty convinced that they had not put them is as they felt there was no difference compared to the other walls. In the end they had to cut a hole in the wall to prove that they were actually there. So all in all there seems to be little value in installing anything in a wall there has to be more engineering in it to make a real difference.

Thanks for the replies guys, jkgmh I'd appreciate it if you don't post any pictures mate. Lol only because of jealousy, that room looks great mate!! I've had a quick scan through the web and a lot of people say that most is crap in sound deadening. There was a easy foam type stuff I saw but thought I would get peoples ideas, I don't want to spend lots trying to do it either.

The walls and ceiling is actual pretty easy providing you've got a the space to give up, it's the doors and windows where the money will be.

Wow completely changed the room. I envision something like that, my low budget to build probably won't tho, haha. Maybe eventually.
