A question for those with GoPro cameras.
I’m looking for a bracket to attach my camera to the side of the car, the doors, quarter panels and glass.
I’ve seen cameras attached to the side of cars on Youtube and the Tele but I’ve never been able to get a good enough look to see exactly what they are or how they attach.
I currently have 2 backets.
The first photo is the bracket for inside the windscreen (not for outside the vehicle) and apart from not trusting the suction cap to hold, it’s useless when attached outside the car because the length of the arm from the base to the camera causes it to quiver when the car is in motion which is noticeable in any video I’ve taken.
The bracket in the second photo has good suction and holds very strong under normal driving and doesn’t quiver but it doesn’t allow the camera to be attached to the side of the car without adding an extension bar between the base and camera to change the camera angle. Adding the extension then causes the camera to quiver.
As you can see my brackets are cheap eBay stuff.
I'd really appreciate if someone can help me and recommend somewhere I can get a good quality bracket for the side of cars?
Thanks, Steven.

I've used the gopro single suction mount. Got plenty of video from all over the car, solid, no quiver and pretty sure it was rated at 150mph and was like 50 bux from jb hifi.

Thanks Listy and vyls1 for the help.
The windscreen bracket I bought said it could be attached inside and outside the car and when it arrived it had a disclaimer saying the seller didn’t recommend it be used outside the vehicle and took no responsibility if it fell away and damaged the camera.
Although it feels to have a fairly solid bond I wasn’t confident after reading the disclaimer. For $5.90 from Hong Kong I guess it’s fair to say you get what you pay for.
I’ll check around to see where I can get the official GoPro item, it may be 10 times the cost but at least it comes with a guarantee to hold fast up to 150 mph.
If anyone knows where the cheapest supplier is or if there are good alternatives equal to the GoPro brackets, feel free to chime in.
Cheers,
.

I too have used the standard go pro suction bracket all over the car, sometimes for hours in the sun and it's never fallen off. Even had it at the drags. I can vouch for atleast 115MPH

They're more like $65 in shops but you'll get a genuine one off ebay under 50.
Pretty sure mine (the 2nd version) came with a suction mount, didn't have to buy one.

i have the latest genuine gopro suction cap, its amazing wont budge one its stuck! Mate has the same and attached it to his fuel tank on his bike and on a track day ran the bike up to 240km/h and he said he saw it just start slide a bit on the tank, but never came fully off.

Not Sure if still a forum sponser, but GM Motorsport supplied all Go Pro gear, and used to offer a forum discount of 10%
thats where i bought my gear from.

Thanks for all the help, you’ve given me confident in the genuine GoPro product.
I ordered one today from a place in Brisbane for $40.99

I’ve also noticed GoPro have tethers for those of us that aren’t so trusting.
I might place the suction cup from the cheap bracket next to the GoPro one and tether it, that way if the GoPro comes loose I won’t lose the camera.
And it’s only for when I have the camera on the side of the car, I’m not so concerned when it’s on the bonnet or roof.
Pretty sure mine (the 2nd version) came with a suction mount, didn't have to buy one.
I’ve got a Hero3+ and they come with a few bits and pieces but not as much as they used too and unfortunately no longer have the suction bracket in the package.
It’s a sign of the times, most of the accessories are now an optional extra.

I would have thought there'd be more pressure on it on the bonnet, roof etc than the side. Never seen how the air flows over our cars though. There would be a few low pressure areas like the bottom of the windscreen (at a guess) but most people chuck them straight in the middle of the panels

You are probably right, I don’t know how the aerodynamics work.
I guess the newer Commodores would to be similar to most modern passenger cars and have a smooth air flow over and around the vehicle while applying some downward pressure and causing turbulence and forces around anything that protrudes from the body panels.
I’m new to having cameras outside the car and I’m possibly worrying a bit more than necessary.
I’m using the Ute just as the test mule for setup, the camera is to be used with the Torana and XY and I suspect neither have good aero.
Their flat noses would cause a lot of turbulence and as it’s for cruising not racing, a 110km/h is the most it will ever have to contend with.
My concern was the separation of the suction cup from the car caused by the additional force the weight of the camera would exert in a sideways fashion on the suction if attached at 90 degrees to a door.
Those concerns have now been alleviated by the experiences of others, all I need to do it buy a genuine rated bracket.
I was talking to a fellow at the servo this morning and he said he duct tapes his bracket to the car, personally I don’t want to do that.
My other big problem was the quivering of the arm between the suction cup and camera mount, it was producing a lot of jittering in the video.
I’m hoping to put this down to the fact I was using a cheap bracket.
I took the Ute out this morning with the 3 suction cup bracket on the bonnet and then on the roof.
I could see how stable it was on the bonnet and from the video is appears just as good on the roof.
This bracket feels to have a very strong bond compared to the other.
If I pull on it the panel starts to deform without the suction releasing.
As you can see in the photo, the camera attaches directly to the bracket without a link arm, this also helps keep the video quality very stable compared to the cheap single suction bracket.
Anyway by next week the GoPro bracket will have arrived and I’ll know if it’s worth the extra money and hopefully it doesn’t jitter.

It will be fine, the only jitter you'd get is from body rock from a big cam, but yeh I've played mine on the TV and notice nil jitter and that's with the extra arm on the Mount.

Yeah the jitter from the cheap bracket is bad and very irritating as you can see in the video.
The video quality is a bit average as I’ve backed it off to allow a quick download to YouTube but you can see what I mean with all the sideways movement.
The GoPro Suction Cup arrived this morning (very fast delivery) and straight up without having tried it you can see the superior quality.
The arms and knuckles are rock solid with no hint of movement.
I’ll try it out later today and see how it works.
Again thanks everyone for your advice.

I tested the new bracket today and it is definitely chalk and cheese.
You can see the different in size of the GoPro suction pad and though not shown, the arm on the GoPro is twice as thick as the cheapie.
I used the old cheap suction cup as a backup and cabled tied it to the GoPro.
And the most important factor is I did about 20km with the bracket on the side and the video quality is now great and very stable.
