Hi guys, I picked up an unused VCM21 last week of a guy who has decided to go bigger, I was just wondering how they go in an auto car, especially with a stock converter?

I thought it was a brilliant combo with stock stall and std 2.92 gears. HSV headers and VCM OTR and valve train mods to suit made for essentially stock manners and superb power curve from the street. Still the fastest on street tyres on road surface setup I've measured. Consistently measured 0-100km/h (GPS verified) in 4.6 secs or faster (best was 4.54 from memory) on decent fresh road surface. Very underrated these type of cams in cars that will probably never see a strip and want maximum gain under the curve.

The vcm 21 was pretty much designed for auto's that don't require hi stall. It will be fine in a stock stalled auto bud.

Yep I'm a big fan of these high lift, short duration cams for street cars, 0-100 in 4.6 is insane acceleration for a Commodore!

I had a small cam (220/220 .595 lift 113lsa) installed to my VE. Drove fine without a stall, but used to surge and almost stall sometimes when i had to suddenly brake hard. According to my hp tuners data logging at the strip, it did 4.4 seconds 0-100 on 19" street tyres.
I then had a 4500rpm stall converter installed as I'm eventually planning on installing a much larger cam. The stall converter solved all the surging issues I had and the 0-100 times improved to 3.9 seconds. With 18" MT's it did 3.6 seconds. I have always enjoyed large stalls, very fun.

Thanks guys, I am looking forward to putting it in and doing a few mods, I have Di filippo extractors on it now, also have a set of the HSV ones as well, any idea what ones would work better? I also have a 3.7 diff for it.

D/F will be the better choice.

I just realised you are talking pre-VE, the title was clear, I just didn't notice, I was referring to a VE A6. The grind isn't as suited to the cathedral heads std but will still work fine. Also as stated, it will be more than ok with the std stall. There's something amiss if that cam in any LS auto with stall cannot be made behave almost completely stock. 3.73 gears in the 4L60E is vey nice result, you'll like that.
The grind isn't as suited to the cathedral heads std
why do you say that?

That cam will work well with all heads - stock or ported - cathedral or rectangular ports. Obviously better gains with headwork though.

I have a VCM9 in my vxss auto which is very similar spec to the VCM21. Went for this cam upgrade with all the associated other parts (lifters, valve springs etc etc). No aftermarket
stall required, drives like a stocky until you mash your foot down and it takes off like a wounded bull especially on take off and kick down. I have 3.73 gears also which
adds to the acceleration. Fuel usage is the same as when it was stock. Dont need any more power than this for a daily driven car. Idle is a little lumpy but you can still tell
its cammed. You wont be disappointed.
Specs and associated parts:
VCM9 Camshaft (Cam Specs:
Cam Profile: 217˚ 217˚ .600" .590" 112.5˚
RPM Range: 1500-6400) Sealed Power Lifters, DuraPro Head bolts, conical valve springs .600, Valve spring locks and retainers, ARP balancer bolt, Arp cam bolt set, Rollmaster D.Row timing chain, Crow push rods, New GM oil pump, Race balancer underdriven.
Mods good for 265RWKW with exhaust and vcm otr + (mafless tune)

don't mean to still your thread, but would these two cams VCM21 or VCM9 be ok for a manual car?

I'm just saying it favours a stock L76/77/98 setup slightly better than a LS1/2. I'm not saying it won't work, it will work very well hence why I'm such a fan and used many, many cams not all that dissimilar that the 'internet' doesn't agree with over the years, just I'd alter the grind slightly for stock 241 heads is all.

I have a VCM 21 in my manual LS1 and I love it. I can idle along at 60km/h in 6th and put the foot down and it will happily drive away (with stock 3.45 diff). Standard cam was breathless up top but the VCM 21 pulls harder mid range through to the redline. The only thing I had to get used to as it the initial take off torque is a little down however once rolling drives like a stocker apart from more giddy up. A good streetable cam.

I had a VCM 21 cam that I was going to use in my LS1. The car is 6sp with 3.73 gears and VCM said this cam would be very well suited to the car and make good power throughout the rev range and also compliment any 'FI' plans later on.
I kind of wish I kept it but I sold it to buy a VCM 6 as the car will no longer be a daily.
I don't imagine the VCM 6 will be anywhere near as "nice" to drive on the street as the 21 would be.

I am considering this cam as well, vx auto with 3.45 diff, good to hear it is ok with stock stall, mine is a daily so no point using more fuel than i have too
will post results once it is in
