Hi guy's, my old CV8 has just hit the 200,000km mark, and is still running fine with good oil pressure, but has a few ticking lifters now, I have been using Penrite HPR 5 10W-40. Is there something better or a bit thicker I should put in?
My Addy has 250K Km's on it and last change I switched over to the Penrite HPR 10/70, good stuff engine is far quieter! :D

Most people on here will probably tell you castrol edge 10w60. Sould be good with that amount of ks. Let us know how you go.

Excellent, thanks guys, I am not quite ready to pull it apart yet, so another oil change that will hopefully quite it down a bit would be great:cheers:

I went down to Supercheap yesterday, wow the castrol is not cheap at 80 bucks a bottle, and you gotta buy 2! Would the penrite HPR 10, 10W 50 be any good, or bet to go with the castrol?

Went down to Repco this morning, as the sale started today here in QLD, it is only the 5W-30 that is on sale, the 10W-60 still 80 bucks:doh: I got 2 anyway, had 2 have it.

There is a on going thread on here RE: Edge 10w-60 sales that people often add to when they see it cheap.
Can usually get it for 25-30% off, I always grab a bottle when I see it if I'm going to need it in the next few months

I done the oil and filter last Thursday with the castrol edge 10-60, wow what a difference, the lifter noise is pretty much gone, and the engine is smoother. It was definitely worth the outlay, thanks guys.

It still amazes me how fussy these motors are with oil. So many complaints of noises that are solved simply by changing oil. Edge 10w60 is definitely a tried and tested winner for the LS1
I've used most of the oils on market (penrite 10 tenths, valvoline syn power and dura blend, liqui moly, pennzoil platinum, shell ultra, nulon).
Some cases I found going to a 60wt oil was a bit too thick for ls1 - blokes in the states are gob smacked when you even consider a 60wt oil in a ls1 - the fuel consumption increased noticeably using this weight.
But when i used a 5w30 or 10w30 it seemed too thin and valve train become noisy and gave the sewing machine noise.
I was running royal purple 10w40 in head and cammed. It was good, fuel consumption wasn't too bad, quietened the valve train a bit but when under WOT or after running for a while, it got louder.
So I decided to go with the USA version of 15w50 Mobil 1. I was hesitant as I had used 0w40 mobil 1 before and hated it. But from what I had read on bob the oil guy forum , the 15w50 had good test results and reviews.
Its appears to be the perfect balance of oil for the ls1. Valve train is quiet at idle and under full throttle, fuel consumption is good and if the additives used to clean are as per the testing done on this oil, after thousands of km's, there should be no sludge internally and still be like new.
For 6L online plus a k&n or mobil oil filter incl delivery was $104 which I was happy with so ill be sticking to this oil in my ls1

Are you getting the oil shipped from the US? It seems like our oils here are quite different to US stuff, they never had any of the problems we had here in the early LS days. I always just buy genuine Holden oil filters.

Its shipped outta melbourne, the seller imports from usa.

At around 200000 klms I would be extreme flushing the engine from now on,
may extend you 4 or 5 oil changes.
The blokes in the states don't have Filtergram, if they did they would run 10w60 to stop the metal that they can't see at present.
Cheers
Steve
