Holden set to announce the LS3 in the MY16 Holden SS
Should they have done this in the MY15 to compete with the 335kw XR8?

Asked why he believes an unprecedented 37 per cent of Commodore customers bought a V8 this year, GM Holden sales director Peter Keley said: "It's not V8 or rear-wheel drive per se, it's what the vehicle delivers as a package."

What a load of BS. He knows full well the reason is we like the V8. But hes towing the politically correct corporate line.

Yes Holden should have got the LS3 in the MY 15 Commodores. I know a few people in the market for a new V8 over the next six Months or so and they are all leaning towards the 335KW XR8 due to the fact that Holden has not updated their V8's pretty much since the VE cam out in 2006 (BTW I am not counting the AFM on the Auto as an upgrade). If Holden were to offer up the LS3 soon they would retain/gain some new customers. Hopefully Holden will get the LS3 in there for the MY15.5 rather than waiting all the way out to MY16 and losing a lot of customer base in the meantime.

Its probably economics as well whats the point having the L77 and the LS3 just have the LS3 and be done with it.

Don't say that, I don't want to wait another 12 months!

I see AFM on the auto as a downgrade, pandering to the "green" clueless. Putting an LS3 in SS/SSV would mean next car I get (if some money drops into my lap) I'd be aiming for one of them instead of an older LS3 HSV now I have to drive an auto.

I see the AFM as a downgrade also and think most auto buyers would rather the extra power and torque of the L98. Back on topic, if Holden gets the LS3 in there sooner rather than later then they will sell like hotcakes. Lots of existing buyers ready to update their cars do not want to be forking out big bucks only to have the same engine ( or downgrade in the case of auto) as their 2006 to 2014 Commodore. Holden does not want to wast this opportunity and get the LS3 in there NOW!

I think that HSV would have to get the LT1/LT4 and the 8L90 to keep their customers happy if the LS3 went downstream. Would be nice to see the LS3 in the Lowndes SSV. It'd be like an E1-E3 Clubby with a VF interior with paddleshift auto.

So is the Auto version going to be L99 I wonder?

I would be confident that is the case. It's already on the line in the export program and retains AFM. While AFM isn't important for people like us. It is for potential buyers who would see its removal as a cut back on features

It will be interesting to see what spec the Holden LS3 would be, I'm thinking a Holden V8 would most likely use standard cast type exhaust manifolds, then the power would be less than 317Kw of the first HSV LS3. Unless HSV get an upgrade as well, I am sure they will want to maintain a distinct power difference from Holden to HSV. I do think though with Ford making XR8 with 335 Kw at much lower price than a HSV, that Holden are going to lose sales to Ford unless they up the power in the SS. The 6.0 has been standard for nearly 7 years now (since '06 VZ SS). Ford is raising the bar, the time is right to upgrade the engine in the SS, as has been said by others already, MY15 would have been a great time to do this.

LS3 upgrade will be limited to 310KW most likely to both align with Chevy SS, and to maintain power gap to HSV.

Sux as I am just about to finalise a MY15 Redline. Now not so sure ... I hate waiting.

Does this pave the way for a detuned LF3 TTV6 aswell then?

Will make little or no difference with cast manifolds or the hsv offering! After all the stock Chev LS3's come crated with cast manifolds. Be only a few RWKW diff in the two & noone really keeps the stock system's on anyhow.

My 2 cents is that it will be the L99 in both manual and auto transmissions with it simply deactivated for the former. Holden has not used an LS motor since the gen III LS1 and i doubt they will go for the LS version here either. If the Holden does turn up with the LS3 then HSV must be looking to the LT1 or maybe a version of the LSA for all models with a tweaked version for the GTS.

We'll just have to wait and see i guess

Cheapest option though will just be to use the LS3 in all the cars. I reckon the last V8 Commodore not many people are going to care much about the AFM they will buy it for the LS3 and even if they loose a few buyers it will still be a record year for the V8.

If that's the case I'll be back looking at older LS3 HSVs if/when someone bestows the odd $20 - $30k on me. :D
