View Full Version : wanna paint rusting rotor hubs - how to jack up car?

so I wanna paint the rotor hubs as they are starting to rust. I'm just wondering what's the safest/best way no how to jack up the car?
I don't have those pneumatic jacks so I'll be using the jack that came with the car. I also have 4 pin-type car stands which according to the box is rated 3000Kg (I guess it's 1500Kg per stand?).

Just behind the front wheels and just in front of the rear wheels on the car sill frame, you will feel and possibly see if you get your head down low enough, a space missing in the side skirts, also you can feel there aswell, you'll feel the sill goes to a double thickness type thing. That's where you jack it up.
It should also be in the car manual if you would like a confirmation and a bit of a help

I'd invest in good jack... Stock one will probably be rooted after doing 4 wheels lol

+1 for a trolley jack. My "suicide jack" packed it in after 3 lifts on the addy and nearly cost me my right leg. I use the control arm to cross member link, it's just in front of the back wheel with a large nut in the centre. On the front I jack under the stock jack point and place the axle stand under the chassis just below and back from the radiator

No, you only want to lift one corner at a time. Do NOT try and lift half the car with the factory scissor jack.
If you want to do a pair, get a decent trolley jack and do an end at a time, jack up from under the diff or the k frame under the engine (not the sump!). Or put the corner on a stand and then lift the next corner.
I also wouldn't leave it sitting on the jack while you paint the rotor/hub. You might not be working right 'under' it but I don't trust the things at all.

not really familiar with cars:
1. any advice on how to locate these points?
2. I was thinking of following the wheel change guide as stated in the manual and lift 1 corner at a time. then put that corner on top of car stand and then do the other corner (e.g. 2 fronts or 2 rears. making sure there's a chock/wood block on the wheels on the ground). bad idea? I only though of lifting 1 corner at a time just because there's an owner's manual I can follow with pics!

I would take option 2 if you're not familiar with cars. Even just doing one corner at a time would be the safest bet. Won't take long for the paint to dry

Your manual will show you where the jacking points for the stock jack are.
I'd take WLs advice.

yeah *3000kg ones, lol,
for the same price he could've got a set of 1500kg jack stands and 1500kg trolley jack at supercheap,
granted not for the tool snobs, but the occasional use safer then the factory death jack, I shudder to think that's the OEM jack in my XUV :eeeeek:
*yes I have 3000kg ones too, but got them for 1/2 price at 30 bucks a set including free postage, plus I has water tanker ;)

Maybe offer a beer or two to a local experienced LS1'er for a bit of guidance.
There are a lot of cheap cr@p trolley jecks out there and you need to be reasonably accurate where you put the jack and then the stands.

Make sure the surface you’re parked the car on is flat.
After you’ve jacked the car and put the jack stands in place, take the rim you’ve removed and slide it under the sill next to the jack stand.
This is always my bit of extra piece of mind in case the stand for some reason fails or topples.
Never put any part of your body, in this case your legs under the vehicle unless you absolutely have too and if you are just cleaning up and repainting the hubs you won’t need too.
Tell the kids to bugger off and think about yourself first, the car can always be repaired if something goes wrong, your legs may not be so lucky.
