Hi Guys,

I'm going to apoligise in advance for these newbie questions - I've done some reading but thought id just raise a topic with specific questions!

I have a 2007 VE SSV ute and only drivetrain mod is really a full xforce exhaust (including headers, etc).

here goes:
1) Maf or mafless?? am i right in saying that mafless means you get a cai? any differences in terms of what the tune would get out?
2) fuel economy? - am i to expect this will get better or worse with a tune?
3) performance gain? just a ball park would i be looking at a couple more kw or 10, 20, etc
4) is the tune a waste if im not doing anything to the cam?
5) what sort of price (ballpark) should i expect to pay for a tune? guessing mafless means i need to add another $500 or so for a cai?

thanks for any advice :)

Hey man to answer questions here is as follows

1) Either will do the trick the maf isn't that restrictive so it will make no difference interms of output if you go maf or mafless.
2) Good tune will improve fuel economy
3) with just exhaust and tune 30-40hp increase would be around ballpark
4) Tune is not a waste it will liven up the car
5) Tune only anywhere from 800-1000 maf or mafless (some people charge extra if it is an auto car as they do also fiddle with the settings in the gearbox).

If going maf or mafless you can use the standard CAI even with mafless because you can just leave the maf inplace and un plug it basically therefore it still looks standard, you will pick up more power, better induction noise and will help with economy if you do upgrade the CAI (VCM OTR do maf and mafless versions).

You can't just unplug the MAF since it also holds the IAT sensor which is mandatory. You can however get a standalone IAT sensor and break out harness

Or unclip the Sig wire ;)

True, but kind or irrelevant going MAFLESS if you leave the MAF in there.

Makes it appear "Legal"

Personally I left the MAF in both my cars as I feel it does a great job.

Thanks for all the comments guys....
I didnt actually realise mafless was illegal! I'll definetly be looking to keep it as legal as possible. It sounds like I can keep the current stock intake and maf and still get some results from a good tune

In your opinion how much rwkw loss would there be in retaining a Maff/IAT but actually Maffless tuned? Obviously talking E38 PCM's only.

On a VE it's practically nothing. The MAF isn't a restriction.

My VZ L76 runs the identical maf as a VE & have swapped them out no worries.

I have the same MAF on the 5.7 in the Tonner and have a 4" Lingenfelter on the Big Engine, I like the idea of a measured amount of air then adding the corresponding quantity of fuel instead of a best guess interpolation, as posted earlier I think they just behave nicer and you retain Torque Mapping so the Transmission functions as expected :)

another random thought!
I'm really happy with the current note and sound of my car - is it likely that a tune would change the sound in any way?
I'm assuming it would get rid of some of the crackling and popping which wouldnt bother me but im not wanting a change to the note

It will change it to a point. Always for the better I've found. Popping on decel is tuner dependent, if you like it tell him that and he will retain the stock aspects.
