Hi all,
hoping this is a simple one. I'm seeking clarification on the easiest way to replace a Welch plug on the rear of the cylinder heads. My VT LS1 has started leaking at the rear of the passenger side cylinder head Welch plug and I need to replace it (may as well do drivers side too).
Is it a case of remove the cylinder head off the car or is there a sneaky trick to leaving the heads on the car and making the task easier??
Many thanks for the help
Cheers

Holesaw through the firewall.... I guess its not a race car and you don't want to do this?

You would assume correctly....the less holes in it the better. Unless they're speed holes in the bonnet ;)

You could try a radiator stop leak, failing that I reckon it is head off, not a lot of room there and you need to tap them in straight.

I just used devcon epoxy putty on mine,
is still holing 9 months later
however
once one frost plug goes, the rest will follow
every month I had to putty up another frost plug
after all 4 had gone
the one behind the flexplate in the block has gone now
apparently it is easy to drop the motor and box from underneath
then do them all!
taking the head off is the hard way, apparently
haven't tried it yet

Personally I'd just drop the engine and do em all at the same time, as drsubby said once one goes the others will follow and there's a right and wrong way to install them, right way needs good clear access to the plug and get it in with minimal number of hits so you don't peen the plug and lose it's crush fit in it's hole.

Thanks for the reply guys. Ive already replaced the ones in the front of both heads so was going to do both the rears(even though only 1 is leaking). I guess the ones in the block will follow shortly?
