Hey guys,

I've just noticed that the gear knob on my manual M6 VY SS has just come loose....like overnight. It can basically rotate CW and CCW and the only think stopping it from rotating more than 180 degrees is the leather boot. The shifter is one of the original RIP shifts as well.

My question is (and sorry it may sound dumb)...are these gear knobs just loctited on & it's just a case of reapplying some loctite? Or do I have a more serious problem?

Had three M6's so far two were VY's & never a loose knob  Try some construction adhesive like Sika or T-Rex perhaps?

Yeah I thought it was very strange and I'm curious to see if anyone else has had this issue before

I was just reading the RIP SHIFT instructions and was wondering if maybe the locating tag is broken

This RIP SHIFT (original race version) has been in my car for at least 8 years and never had an issue. If the locating tag is fact broken, can this cause damage to my gearbox or does it just mean that the knob can spin around?

There's a locating tab inside the knob, either try and get a new one or sikaflex the crap out of your old one and hope it holds. Being 8 years old I'd say it's just gone crappy, brittle and broken. Normally people who don't know how they work twist them off instead of just yanking up to remove. Won't hurt your gearbox will just annoy the shit out of you until you fix or replace

Thanks heaps for the info mate. And that's good to know that it won't damage anything. When it really shits me I'll pull it off and stick some sikaflex inside the knob.
