Many of you know my love of Apple and their iPhone range so lets try and stay away from negative conversations :)

My issue is that I was given one for work, and I am trying to set it up but the wifi speed is abysmal. It is running ios 8.3 so firmware/rom shouldn't be an issue.

Looking online it appears to be a common issue, just wondering if anyone has the issue too, and any possible fixes.

I had a similar issue with my Xperia Z2 when I first got it. My old Samsung Galaxy worked nice and fast on my home wifi, but the Z2 was just terrible. After a bit of research I found that switching my router from 2.4GHz to 5GHz only fixed the problem and has been working great ever since. Don't know how much help that is to you on a work wifi network though.

I had a slow wifi issue with my Microsoft surface pro3 when I first got it, may have been a similar issue to what you're seeing.
I'm not big on tech speaks so hopefully this will make sense.
Network adapters in modern devices are starting to use some sort of power saving measure where they go into sleep mode between packets of data being sent or received, or something like that.
The problem arises when you have an old wifi router that is not compatible with this system, what happens is the router doesn't know to send the signal to tell the device to awaken and receive data (or maybe its the other way around), either way the result was a wifi transfer rate of (in my case) around 5mbps that dropped to about 500kbps after the first data packet is sent.
Annoyingly when doing a speed test with speedtest.net I would always get matching transfer rate to the rest of my devices even though it was painfully slow to browse with.
I was able to change a setting in power options to turn off the feature and fix the problem, not sure if the same is possible with apple stuff.

Don't know if this will be any help to you or not but I thought it was worth mentioning.

Cheers guys. Will do some more digging around that sleeping issue. Oddly the iPhone doesn't see my 5ghz stream ( have tried with both my fritzbox 3970 and my Asus ac68u).

Can't say I've had any issues using 5ghz. Haven't done a max performance speed test on my lan as yet either. But it's fast when pulling down local media via plex

The biggest problem with 2.4 is channel overlap. There are only 3 non overlapping channels 1,6 & 11, so in high density environments there is so much interference it can become almost unusable. Whilst 5.8 doesn't have this issue, it doesn't penetrate solid objects nearly as well as 2.4, so large houses are difficult to setup with 5.8. To make matters worse, most residential grade access points are pretty gutless so 5.8 tends to get flicked for slower but better propagating 2.4.

We use medium/high gain antennas for practically all 5.8 installations and often will even use sector antennas (60/90 degrees) to concentrate the beam to only where it is required.

Generally 5.8 is used for bridging and backhaul purposes and 2.4 is used for local access points because they are backwards compatible with older devices.
