G'day all,

Looking at getting my SS-V tuned soon (finally), and am looking at getting Hi-Torque performance on the gold coast to do it. Their pricing is very good, and their reputation is excellent, but they've said they can only make minimal adjustments to the transmission software. Specifically, apparently they can only adjust line pressure and quicken the shifts slightly. So I'm looking for feedback from folks who've had their auto VE tuned by Hi-torque. How much difference did the tune make to the behaviour of the transmission? The main problem I have with the trans is the 'in-decisiveness' and slow responses, especially to kick-downs etc.

I understood that most tunes will drastically improve the behaviour of the trans, am I wrong?

Thanks in advance!

Interesting. From what I've read and heard there is a real art to tuning the A6 and if you get it wrong .............. Apparently an enormous number of parameters and some guys have got it worked out and have run many 10 and 11 sec passes on stock, tuned A6s without a problem. Guess they're concerned about potential problems, hence only minor tweaking. They do have a very good reputation from all I've read on here over 10+ years.

Thanks for the reply Wonky, yeah I've been to a couple of their dyno days and heard nothing but good things, but this transmission thing worries me. It's the main reason I want to get the car tuned, to be honest. The gearbox has too many... idiosyncrasies. Might have to look around a bit more.

Might pay to get a few more opinions from other tuners, other aspect of the VE A6's some will behave different with a final drive ratios change. Our sports wagon A6 was ordinary with the orig. 2.99. Though way better now with the 3.27.

Hi Torque tuned my old VE GTS (Auto). You will find a dramatic improvement to the shifts and the driveability you are currently experiencing. Just as important as the tune is having it serviced and decent trans fluid.

yeah, have the auto serviced before the tune :) . made that mistake before. had a tune done on an auto ls1, then had the box serviced later. the line pressures had been turned up for firmer shifts on a sloppy box, after a service it almost snapped your neck when shifting into second.

i have had about 10 tunes in my maloo a6 from new to present day i have done some of them myself i can't say i have had one that is PERFECT for EVERY driving situation
you can get firm shifts , quick shifts , change the rpm that it shifts at , change the road speed that it down shifts at , but there will always be something that annoys you after you drive it for a while , DRIVEABILITY ( nice to drive ) is the name of the game hard to please all the people all of the time , so a tune that suites you might not suite me, example it shifts to hard for you and not hard enough for me ect holds the gears to long for me and not long enough for you
BUT just about anything is better than the stock tune , some of the the things you will have to live with or learn to change them yourself

Hmmm might have to get it serviced before tuning then! Good info.

yes good idea i droped the pan on mine at 30k and the oil was like new no smell or sludge in the pan so just new oil and filter

Never hurts to over maintain these things as the autos do a huge job. Many change eng. oil periodically but overlook the boxes & diffs.

I had the ute A6 trans fluid changed from memory at around 35k just to see how it was looking. As above, still like new! :goodjob:

I had my first cam change done by Hi Torque. And second. Didn't have the A6 tuned there though

The "exact" number of "tunable parameters" will depend on..

The tuning software being used.
The calibration OS in the TCM.
The dedication of the tuner (custom calibration files).

That being said, most all combinations of the above should allow for...

Shift point relative to Throttle Position vs Road Speed.
Shift fluid pressure (how hard it shifts)
Desired shift time (how fast it shifts)

In addition to these, most all calibrations allow for...

TCC apply / release paramaters (when the Torque Converter Clutch is engaged to lock up the converter).
TCC pressure (how hard the TCC is applied)
WOT shift parameters
Shift pattern selections.
Many other parameters.

My assumption would be that Hi Torque have realised that for the later model cars, the stock parameters are quite good for a basically stock, tuned motor. Not perfect, (and my view is that there are some good drivability changes to be had in changing the sift points and some other settings) but OK.

there's some good reading on the efilive forum about getting better shifts on the stock A6 by just changing one map in the ECM tune ,im sure you've read it Swingy
i did mine using that method it was smoother than the A 6 box tune i had from a tuner back in 09 im sure things have progressed a lot since
the only thing i dident like was it would change down to 2nd at WOT at 75 kph witch with 540 rwhp was unsettling to say the least so had to play with downshift road speed setting ,all good now
cheers
