Hi folks, can I please have your advice on an oil catch can for my VT LS1 track car? The engine is mostly stock at this stage (just air intake) and I am wanting reliability and durability. What brands/models are good value for money? Any pitfalls with buying second hand? Anything else I need to look out for?

I wanted an elite as I had read everyone say they were the best, but then I decided to go with a saiko michi. It's basically the same design as an elite, really happy with the quality. Bit cheaper than the elite but had to wait a few weeks for it as they are custom made in small batches. The wait time is the only bad thing I can say about it.

Does it come apart? Looks like 1 piece

Yea it's just 1 piece which drains at the bottom, it doesn't screw apart like the elite does.
Here's another few pics if you're interested.

Hmm I wouldn't call that comparable to the elite product at all. Fittings aren't even barbed. I realise the elite price doesn't mean it's for everyone. But that one would want to be significantly cheaper to be considered an alternative.

It's $95 US, I have 3/8 hose on mine with no clamps which I can't pull off (i tried) so the fittings are decent enough. It mounts the same, and does the same job, same internal baffle design, but just doesn't screw apart. I'm comfortable calling it comparable.

The baffle is completely different in the elite. It condenses the vapour prior to entering the lower chamber. It's also cleanable. Yours isn't. In the end it's better than nothing. But you get what you pay for

I'm also using a Saiko Michi catch can, however ours is the dual design with twin cans.
Surprising just how much oil it catches between oil changes.

Reading up about oil catch cans, with most of these threads being quite old, is the Elite Catch can still the best choice? They have the original e2x and a new e2 it seems. The e2 seems better and larger for less cost? Lots of options too, I'm not actually sure what I would require.

The Mighty Mouse and SAAS catch cans are two good alternatives to use.

I think the SAAS catch can looks quite reasonable for the price you can get them on ebay.

I had the elite on mine prior to blower, now have a bigger custom one. It was exceptional quality and well worth the coin imo.

Ive had a look at the Mighty Mouse and SAAS catch cans as well as the ASE, I wouldn't choose a vented catch can, which seems the only option with the Mighty Mouse and ASE. The SAAS does look like good value but I think I will just pay the extra for the Elite even though I need to import it directly it seems. Just need to work out the best configuration.

I have an Elite on my ute, bought it direct from Elite in the USA, they were good to deal with, the product is excellent quality.

Thanks for the replies guys, Elite Catch Can it is. I will choose the new E2 version with the check valve and spare O rings. I don't think I need the clean side separator or extra hosing though. Are you guys running the single or dual exit port versions?

Does anyone know if there is a difference with the 04 GTO kit to our 04 Monaro's (my car)? Or should I choose 04+ commodore?

http://www.eliteengineeringusa.com/e2-x-catch-cans/I don't know how new the "new E2" actually is. I've still got one in a box from years ago that I never fitted after hearing of people having issues with them on boosted motors.

Took some reading to confirm but you're right, looks like the E2 came out at least 5 years ago. So not NEW :)

Ive looked at a few other installs and it appears that for my car I shouldn't actually need any optional extras.

- The Dual port is probably over kill for my car.

- The check valve is apparently only needed for Forced Induction.

- I am mounting it in the intended location so no need for the extra hose length.

- I like the factory look so I'm not looking at braided hose or stainless hose.

The Clean Side Separator is probably the only option to consider and is apparently worth it if you run a MAF (so probably no one else on here with an LS1) but real mixed thoughts on this in general.
