Hi guys, I was registered under a different nic years ago but haven't visited for many years so now have a new nic. It's nice to be back.
Hopefully this is the right forum for this post please let me know if not. I've done a few searches and couldn't find anything related so posting instead.
My VE SSV is getting a bit long in the tooth, she's still a beauty but it's time for an upgrade.
Being a Holden man I was looking at a VF Redline which has all the fruit plus some for my purposes. I have however developed an odd attraction to the XR8. I know it's not as pretty as the SSV, doesn't have most of the new fandangle gadgets and the interior and dash are kind of dated but I can't seem to shake it.
Has anyone been in the same quandary and if so what did you end up running with? General comments are also welcome thanks.
Sorry I'm not trolling or trying to start an us Vs them thread just seeking genuine, friendly advice, cheers.

Yeah always been a Holden man, loved the Ls engines thought they went hard with cam and head's, until i drove a Ford F6 turbo faaark they go hard i no its not XR8 but simular.
I new after that drive i had to have one, looked at VE HSV GTS's and VF SS nice cars but it had to be a FG F6.
I guess what it was for me, the power of the turbo 6 which made the VE's feel slow.
Go drive both cars before making a choice.

Thanks mate, can I assume you might be referring to the Series 2 VF?

Yep apparently the VF series 2 Commodores will come out with the 6.2L LS3 engine....definitely worth hanging out to see if it's true before making a decision

Cheers Shane, funny thing I did consider throwing the XR6T into the mix for a bit, it sure has impressive figures but decided it has to be an 8 before it's too late....
Have driven the Redline and it is very nice indeed but there's not many XR8 demo's around, seems to be a case of deposit now and drive at delivery. I have of course checked a couple out pre-delivery you can start but not dirive, and the online reviews etc....

Ok thanks mech.... 2 Q's if this does transpire, what kw would we be talking and would this mean a price increase?

I thought if it did happen (which magazines are predicting - doesn't mean a lot) it was going to be the L99 which is the AFM variant of the LS3?

I doubt there'd be a price increase if it does happen since the XR8 is factory supercharged. Also no doubt the LS3 engine (or LS3 variant) will be detuned quite a bit, but it will be a great base & nothing a good tune can't fix anyway

wait for VF Ser2. If it comes out with the 6.2, all good. If not, theres always the XR8 (I wouldn't mind one :) )

i think the hoon in all of us would like the XR8 motor in the VF chassis.
I want to get on of the last commdores but the mustage and camero coming will be interesting times.
Ps I recon the new ford looks better than VF

If you want a straight line warrior or something you can spend little money on to get fast strip times than the XR8 is for you, if however you want more that a straight line warrior the SS-V Redline is the go. The choice is ultimately yours but when you test drive them both try and look past the thrust of the XR and compare what you get for the money relative to what you want.

I am assuming you mean from the outside? You certainly could not compare the interior of the VF with the Falcons retro look?

I think the XR8 is a bit on the ugly side but if the new VFII doesn’t come to the party with its first power upgrade since Fred Flintstone was a boy then I’d definitely go the Ford.
In a few year’s time both the Ford and Holden interiors will be dated and you’ll still have that wonderful factory supercharged engine.

exactly.... and if one reads all the mag and on line tests, the only thing that Fraud has that is better than the SSV is bragging rights to the amount of horsepower it has
The SSV looks better inside and out, has better seats, brakes better, handles better (it runs away from XR8s in the curves despite less grunt) , is nicer to drive, uses less fuel .... etc etc blah blah
All vote for the SSV over the XR8
Now, one might not believe everything they read but when ALL the mag tests and online tests (DRIVE etc) say the same thing when comparing these 2 cars... there has to be a element of truth there

After being away from Holdens for a while when it came time to get back into a 4 door sedan I looked around at ALL options...the new XR8 did start to grow on me but I think the resale down the track will be poor....Falcons don't sell well new let alone second hand..I read a lot of reviews and the VF seemed to be a giant leap for holden in refinement, style and handling etc. I now own a 2014 VF SSV Redline and am VERY happy with my choice, I would like to one day supercharge it which would then give me best of all worlds :) The holden motors seem a lot easier to modify as well. Saying that the Ford wouldn't be a bad car to own day in day out hence the constant healthy Ford vs Holden rivalry but I just think the commodore has progressed better with the the times and our demands.

I don't agree with you,
I think both will have good resale values,
the FG335 GT is holding it's used price really well
& I expect this very short run of supercharged XR8's will hold up just as well.

Agreed, the limited edition Turbo XR6 the same
Think they will be better than a craig lowdnes or Collingwood edition commodore

hmmm.. not so sure about Falcon resale values.
for those who paid $79,900 + on roads for a 2014 Ford Performance Vehicles GT F FG MK II 351
my dealers valuation guide has these with a resale value of $52,000 -$55,000
or a 2012 Ford Performance Vehicles GT FG MK II Boss 335 GT RSPEC which had a RRP cost $76,990 (+ORC)
it has a resale value of $42 -$47,000 based on 45-50,000kms travelled

If you compare the pair of them they are certainly no worse than the Commodore.
In the past I agree the Ford did not hold used value as well but we are not talking about past values
these things are holding up much better today.
