View Full Version : Key No Longer Locking/Unlocking VE
Wonky

Went to pull the key out of the Senator's ignition when I got home a few days ago and it came completely apart in the process with bits falling onto the front floor left, right and centre. :D Turns out the previous owner (who shall remain nameless :p) had long ago had the same problem and used glue to try to hold the damaged bits together.
I put it all back together (had previously replaced the buttons on one of the ute's keys so it was easy) but found it wouldn't unlock or lock the car from the buttons, yet when I put that key in the ignition it started fine. In the hope it was battery related I put a new battery in - same problem still. Swapped circuit boards between keys and now that key locks/unlocks works but the other one doesn't........ :bawl:
By a process of elimination I figure the circuit board is dead??? Any other possibilities or suggestions please?
If it is that and I buy a new one, will I then need a Tech 2 or something to reprogram it? I thought I'd recently read some reference a while back on a Pontiac G8 site somewhere that seemed to be suggesting that you could use an existing working key to reprogram a new one??? Possible or was I dreaming?
Cheers,
Gary

Last owner was a dodgy f$&k mate ;)
My wife lost one of our Senator keys, ended up costing me about $500 to fix (brand be key required from HSV) and reprogramming to suit.

Why is the HSV key so much more expensive than a replacement Holden version, cost me $350 brand new flip key for my Calais.

The little HSV sticker in the key fob has a hidden diamond under it! :eeeeek:
Wonky, if you have a functioning key utilise that and buy a new one from ebay. Something like this Flip Key (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Holden-remote-VE-Commodore-Complete-Replacement-Flip-Remote-Key-3-button-panic-/252000452483) they even offer cutting and programming for $100.

I bet they can't do it. I went to a couple of places who said they could do it for a Holden but couldn't do it for HSV models.

maybe, but i would get the key cut and take it to HSV/Holden for programming if need be.

Ring around a few locksmiths and see if they can program it. If so, get a cheap fob off ebay and take it to them

Well the cost is for reprogramming of both keys .. You can't just program one. The key itself was about $300 from memory.

Just for future reference. There is two parts to coding the key. You have the head (bit that has the key on it) and the fob (has the buttons on it). The head is for the immobiliser and the fob is for the RFA (Remote Central Locking)
To ADD another head you need to have all of the currently coded keys (or atleast one) and if you don't have them, you have to erase all of them and code TWO new keys. You cant just code one. Hence when you lose your keys and you dont have a spare you have to buy two new keys to code them.
If you add another fob you can do that without all of the old keys or you can erase them all and just add the ones you have.
HSV and Holden keys are the same as someone said, just the sticker. The sticker does actually have a part number :p

Thanks Jez for doing my keys for me yesterday. [emoji106] I bought a new transponder unit from my dealer and Jez did his magic on them yesterday after adding EDI and TPMS to my E1 Senator with E3 iQ upgrade.
Bloody awesome! !

Gaz our VE flip key did same about a year ago, so I bought a genuine replacement head off a GM dealer through Evilbay.
As my existing head & buttons were fukked & in pieces too. I noticed the head had a small graphite looking chip in it. I carefully prized that out & substituted it into the new head I bought & put it all back together. Put it in the Calais & started her up...hasn't missed a beat since.
