Neighbors might be a bit upset when I park my new Australian made Bright star touring bus in the street with a 1000km range :-)
What ? Just the new Holden.... unlike their future imported $hit boxes.
Australian manufacturing not dead when backed by Chinese billions who like our engineering and build quality.
Fingers crossed as this would be IRONY.

how on earth can they be zero emissions, we run base load and peak on COAL and unless we go nuclear we always will!

Well there is Solar and Wind power etc..... which contributes,After much research even Coal electricity is less polluting than the total fuel life cycle used in ICE cars, remember at night one cannot throttle down a coal fired plant easily, plus with good scrubbers at a coal fired plant - less pollution (granted concentrated around the coal plant - but the major benefit is cleaner air / healthier cities).
As we see high & higher emission standards - government mandated, more of our transport will be hybrid and later EV.
VW started a dam snowball that is just going to get bigger with their bloody fake clean diesels (bastards)
Governments (USA / JAPAN / KOREA and others) are favouring Hydrogen Fuel cells to keep it convenient and the status quo for energy suppliers.
I personally truly hope Hydrogen Fuel cells for transport fails and cars are put in Museums, while at the same time Battery density and rate of charge ramps up significantly with many industry players predicting so.
Why?
Making Hydrogen fuel, transporting and dispensing - requires a heap more electricity than just charging a battery.
China the world biggest player is betting on Batteries - not Hydrogen, on this one I give them full credit as they have backed a winner in the long term that will save them serious money and electricity capacity at the end of the day.

hehe i dont disagree, we are on the same page here... just chuckle when the greenies 'despise coal' and think we can have 100% solar towns and buzz around in electric cars with zero footprint!. crikey how do they think the massive battery storage has little enviro effect.
we need a exponential step change in battery and solar panel tech.. then solar might be better.
the newer power stations are quite capable of adapting to load changes now, its a new world in coal power tech... as you say they are so much cleaner.
