Hi all
Just had the tailshaft worked on, new centre bearing and couplings

Also had new diff pinion seal done, rear main seal and sump seal

So had driven about 50km since the work and cruising along at 80km in 5th gear and had a sudden experienced a violent shudder that lasted roughly 3 seconds, backed off and it disappeared.

Drove another 30km home and all fine

The shudder seemed to have come from the rear and shook the whole car and quite noisey, I had a look the best I can and can't see anything but will be contacting the workshop about it.

I'm thinking it's the tailshaft? If anyone has any opinions please let me know

Cheers

If you've only driven ~50kms, then it's highly likely that it's from the work that just got done...

Centre bearing is out of alignment. Mine did this after the AWD conversion. We slotted the mounting holes and moved it side to side until we found its happy place. Ended up being as far towards the drivers side as it would go.

Thank you for the replies

It went back to the mechanics, road tested as well as tested at varying speeds on a dyno and the problem didn't happen again

Tailshaft got the clean bill of health, they told me it mah have been the CV's, the CV's are original and car has 164K km on it and there showing signs of wear. They don't knock but will probably replace them shortly.

Not on a VY but I had a VL that had a vacuum leak on the intake pipe that caused the whole car to jerk around, lasting a few seconds at a time. At first I thought the diff had locked up or something it was so sudden.

Could be that something else has come loose while they were fiddling around in the engine bay. Or its your CV's, what do I know!
