Time has come to do plugs again, and I am torn between NGK and AC Delco. In the past I have quite often just gone the TR6 and replaced more often, but with the Iridium and Platinum plugs starting to become available for more competitive prices am not sure. So are the AC Delco for $60 a set as good as the NGK Platinum for $120 a set? Or should I just stick with TR6 and change more often. Car is VE Calais 6 litre with cam and decked heads.

Stick with a TR6 or BPR6EFS

Difficult one! The trap with the long lasting Iridium's most don't even bother removing/check or clean them, the longer the plug stays in the gap widens & generally motor runs smoother. though risk with LS is being a steel plug in an ally head for too long can be problematic when you do finally attempt to change them.

Thanks guys, will do as Macca said I reckon and stick with the TR6. I don't think I would leave plugs in long enough to get value out of the longer life plugs. What gap are people running, from memory 1.1 is recommended, but I think last time I went 1.5. Cant remember for the life of me.

1.5mm is fine. If you get misfires (which you shouldn't) then close it up a bit

There's nothing wrong with the oem ones, although I bought some tougher MSD ones from Speedinc when I last made a decent order.

yeah, oem are what i have been using, i was just looking for new leads as i have never changed mine and they were on it when i bought the car in january 06. i have seen a few sets on ebay, was just wondering if there are any a bit cheaper. $150+ seems a bit steep. i got my wifes for 80 or 90 last year but can remember where i got them.

NGK make the leads with the shields, got them on the Tonner
It's ls1 but should be able to get them for l76
Repco or bursons would probably have them or get the part number from the NGK website and search ebay
Seems to be lots of plugs & leads on there cheap lately

Ok, ended up picking up the TR6 from Autobarn for $44. The gap straight out of the box appears to be around 1.1mm, do I just wack them in like that or should I re gap them to 1.5?
Shouldn't do any damage re gapping?

Won't hurt to regap them but I can't remember the last time I gapped plugs. Straight out of the box, in they go

I was thinking the same, recommended gap for the 6 litre motors is 1.1 I think, but have always run 1.5 previously in my old H+C LS1. Might just bang them in as are like you say and see how they go :)

Edit: Just rechecked the gaps and they are actually 1mm not 1.1.

Yes Rod would leave them at 1.1mm as under use they naturally open up anyway. Good thing to check on the cheaper plugs is the leading thread is cut right as have seen many peeps just wind them in & can strip the threads out of their heads. By hand as far as it will go is the best rule of thumb then torque em from there.

Thanks Mick. Yeah, I always wind them in as far as I can by hand whilst heads are stone cold :)
