Hi Guys,

What do people on here use to grease their door hinges? I'm assuming that I need to use white lithium grease but I can only find it in a spray can. Is this what I should be using or is there a paste that's better to use?
Thanks guys

:yup: is what I use, can use it on many other applications too. Also use it on my panelift door springs.

Excellent, thanks Mick. Where do you buy it from?

I get mine from local fastener supplier, like Blackwoods, or try Bursons or possibly Repco.

I just got told by my mechanic (and also a mate who used to work at Subaru a long time ago) to use a motorbike chain adhesive lubricant...it should be tacky enough to stick to the hinge but without the white greasy mess

.. as one who uses bike chain white lube on his Kwaka (Motorex make a super version) there is one warning if you do !
Do not let it dry on anything it is not supposed to be on (ie via overspray) as it does not come off unless you use acrylic
paint thinners or nail polish remover which are not really good for any paint work.

Because of this I wouldn't use it ... unless you have a white car ...:lol

Thanks for the warning Smitty. If I end up using chain lube I'll get one that is clear. Any idea if CRC Tac2 is clear

I remember it being a yellowish, gummy sort of colour (if that makes sense?) not clear...but I haven't used a can of it for a long time

sorry guys I had my terminology all screwed up. It's actually the door strap things that are quite tight and grindy. Do I still use the same grease stuff? And do I have to clean the door strap before applying the grease?

Thanks Mick. Should I use degreaser initially to clean the arm / door strap first before applying grease?

Same subject just slightly different, my front doors dont stay open like they should. Is there a way to tighten things up so they will stay open?

Just to put a cat amongst the Pigeon's the strap you showed in the picture yes grease (most greases would do here)

The little pin on the strap (on the car) if you could work some grease into the pivot so it gets to the bush (with a small rod or brush) wipe off excess.

Now the door hinges are another issue (before everyone says they come out with grease) which I know as a mechanic however,

the hinge should be Penetrating oil first, then a week later engine oil, we need to get the oil into the hinge bush or it won't lubricate it. (grease is just oil with a thickener to keep it in place)

So think about it, first lube the hinge and get something that will run in (Penetrating oil) then upgrade to an oil, which will lubricate long term, impossible to get grease into

you door hinge unless you have a grease nipple on the hinge to push the grease in, grease won't flow into a hinge.

then you have done the best you can do.

Cheers

Steve

Thanks heaps Steve for your detailed response.

I've smeared the tac2 all over the door strap on the weekend but I'm still getting some stiffness and grinding on both rear doors like the strap isn't guided into the door properly when closing the door. Is this a common problem with the VT-VZs?

I just spray mine with Gun Cleaning lubricant. Works very well.

For those grinding hinges, use Penetrene spray. http://qsmart.net.au/sample-post/penetrene-2/
There was a great product called "yield" bought it many years ago from a Chem company from Botany. You could virtually watch the rust/corrosion disappear within a few minutes! http://www.chemsearch.com/productDetail.asp?country=UK&language=English&language_id=4&countryName=UK&pLetter=Y&pName=YIELD+EXTRA+AEROSOL%0D%0A

Thanks heaps Mick, I think I'll have to give the Penetrene spray a go

Speaking of the product Yield. I had an old HZ one tonner with rooted upper wishbone bushes & the only way to remove the wishbones in situ is to knock the arm studs back into the xmember to allow removal of the assembly. I tried everything from soft faced hammers to heat but with the yield & some patience they came out really easy.

Thanks for the replies guys. Dumb question before I take the door trims off...do these door straps run on rollers inside the rear doors?
