View Full Version : Bought from Manheim - rego question
So I bought an old 4wd banger from Manheim. The car is registered until the end of March and still has plates etc, drives really well actually, got lucky.
Manheim told me I need to transfer it into my name in 28 days however how can I do this when I don't have the original sellers details?
Is the seller now Manheim? I wouldn't think so - surely they wouldn't transfer every car into there name?
Anyone else been through this?
Cheers

:yup: Manheim is the dealer & organisation you purchased from, no different to buying from a used car lot really.
You're right, I was over thinking it.
The invoice has the LMCT number so it's just like buying from a dealer.

Actually it's allot different Mick
Manheim sell vehicles as agents on consignment & often the registration is cancelled by the owner of the vehicle or even by Manheim themselves.
They don't supply current roadworthy certificates or warranties like dealers do.
In South Australia Manheim cancel plenty of the registrations themselves & cash in the refund.
Perhaps this is an unusual case & the car is registered but the previous owner still has legal duties
the same as in every other sale of every vehicle as far as notification of disposal,
but I imagine if the registration was available to transfer they would have given out
(& made certain the OP sign) all the correct paperwork for their own records.
Many years ago in Victoria the vehicle either had to have a current roadworthy certificate or the registration had to be frozen or cancelled
(they even used to have a blue sticker placed on the windscreen similar to a defect label)
so the vehicle was not to be driven until the new owner arranged their own roadworthy.
To the OP, I think you should get 100% clarification from the seller where you stand on it
as to if the car is still even registered & I certainly would not be driving it in the meantime.

I checked on vicroads and its still registered, expires 29.03.2016. Perhaps I simply take the transfer forms into vicroads with my manheim receipt and RWC and they just process it? I think i recall one of the ladies saying "you've got 28 days to transfer" it. Perhaps your right whitels1ss, maybe they will cancel the reg after that time?

If you have a RWC I think you should go to Vic Roads with that & all the paperwork you have from Manheim ASAP.
Manheim could be waiting on transfer papers from the old owner which they often get when they pay the owner
for the vehicle they have sold which is normally paid to the owner 7 days after the vehicle is sold,
often it's not until the owner gets paid that he hands over the registration papers or they may cancel it.
Was the vehicle actually cataloged, listed in the sale & invoiced to you with "registration expires 29/03/2016" on all the paperwork?
If it was listed as registered to that expiry date they should supply transfer docs.
If it was not listed as registered to that expiry date I think there may be more of a problem

Sold with rego dated March 2016
Well Manheim should have supplied (or should supply) you the correct paperwork so you can transfer the registration in that case.
As posted before, go to vicroads with your roadworthy certificate & Manheim paperwork ASAP.
Spoke to Manheim, they said just go to VicRoads with the RWC and the receipt from Manheim and that's enough for the transfer.
The person from Manheim today said that you don't need the transfer papers as they notify VicRoads of any sold vehicles, which makes sense.
Time for a roady!!
Thanks for all the help.

Manheim will have already transferred it to your name from the date it was paid for. If you don't supply Vicroads with a RWC within 28days they will suspend the rego (until you provide them with the RWC). Your fine to drive it in the mean time as if you happen to recieve any tolls/tickets they will be sent to you :)
